X11 Applications On Opie
« on: December 05, 2004, 06:21:29 pm »
I just tried to install abuse via package manager on a 5500 running oz 3.5.2. It told me that two libraries were required. These are in .../feed/x11/ and I started a command line download, which led to a secondary dependancy.

My question is this. Is it safe to add the x11 feed to Opie as it was not included by default, will X11 applications run under opie?

OPIE is not X11 based,
You will either have to start up X on a different VT than OPIE is on or use X/QT to the best of my knowledge.

You should be able to use GPE on OZ 3.5.x. Though I'm not sure if X programs need any kind of adjustment to work in GPE, I don't think they do.

Yes normal X11 apps will display under GPE.

I ssh'd to a Debian system and set my DISPLAY to be the Zaurus and ran xclock, gnome-terminal and firefox for fun.

The apps dont fit well on the 320x240 screen of my 5500.

Great. So, samac, if you need to use Abuse, switching to GPE is the easiest option.

Out of curiosity, how did you do that? The version of ssh that comes with OZ (3.5.1 at least) doesn't support the -X option.

I ended up doing a xhost + on the zaurus to allow anyone to display apps on it.

It worked for testing but I would not recommend it due to the total lack of security

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks. And now Nictotine is running on my 5500, from my G4, and, actually, it manages to fit the screen pretty well. Mostly. It's much better rotated, of course.

OK as I am likely to stick with Opie, rather than GPE, then I guess no Abuse. In that case the Abuse package should be removed from the Opie feed.

Thanks all
