Which roms do you like best?
« on: January 02, 2004, 07:31:00 pm »
To all of you that have tried most of the roms out there:

Which one do you like best, why?

What Z are you using them on?

Which roms was the most troublesome to you and why?

and any anything else you want to add?

Im using a the x11 rom on my 860.  I really do like the rom a lot, the only thing that gets to me is the software availability and speed.

I like the X11 ROM.  The speed is not really an issue for me.

I will probably end up with X11 ROM on my 760.  I use the 700 for testing, and will be looking at the latest cacko qt ROM on there.  I currently have the cacko 17 qt rom on my 760... I have been very happy with that.

I flashed oz 3.3.6-pre1 on the 5600... and will probably try tkc on the 700 and 5600.  I haven\'t yet had a chance to
try tkc as cacko keeps belting out new roms.

To me, the potental of the X11 ROM outweighs the speed issue.  The only gotcha is the 700 doesn\'t seem to have
enough RAM.  I assume this won\'t be so much of an issue with the 760.  When the 760 arrived from dyanmism -- I was able to load every app on the thing... at the same time.  nice little device, eh?

SL-C760

Cacko 1.18.  Actually, I\'m currently running the latest cacko Qtopia-based release, I don\'t think it has a version number, yet.  Cacko has made a lot of improvements to the Sharp ROM, the simplest of them add up to make my Zaurus MUCH more useable than it was with the Sharp ROM.  Qtopia is an excellent stylus-fee environment, necessary when I\'m moving from area to area at work and don\'t want both hands occupied and don\'t want to set my stylus down and forget where I left it.

I have run cacko\'s X11 ROM and liked it.  The ability to see multiple windows at the same time is very desirable, for example a terminal telnetting an intermediate router and another pinging a destination router.  As more and more network tools and apps get compiled for cacko\'s X11 ROM it will become even more attractive to me.

I picked up a 5500 and am using TKR.  I use a ambicom WiFi card and a 256mb sandisk SD.

I love TKR, I tried OZ but the look and feel of TKR has me stuck to it.

I\'m learning slowly on how to work things and use it efficiently amonst the space I have, as well as using the updated ipkg software.

all in all it\'s a great tool .

Im using the 860 and running on cacko\'s x11 rom and love it.  Speed is kinda slow but the functionality covers for it.  Great potential....especially when more apps are ported for it...which will eventually happen when more people start using it.  Tried other roms but the fact that the x11 makes the Z act more like a real computer makes it really appealing.

On my 5500 I use the tkcrom, as it is based on the sharp rom, but adds in lots of extra features and bug fixes.  I tried the cacko 64,0 rom, but with all the software on the sd card it was too slow for me.

I will probably try the new oz rom on this once I have my 760 set up how I want, and the 5500 becomes a toy rather than a tool.

I have had my 760 for less than a week and I am currently setting it up to replace the 5500.

I have tried the main roms for this, and like them all, although at the moment I have decided to stick with the latest cacko rom.
I have chosen this for its stability, ease of use, compatability, functionality and fit for purpose for my usage factor.

I really like oz and the x.11 rom, but I need the following things.

no particular order..

1) A decent small pim application, that will sync to my pc, preferably outlook, as it is what I have to use for work.
2) A decent gps application.
3) A decent full screen video player, so far the sharp movie player for the c750/760/860 is the best I have ever seen on any handheld.
4) The \"cool features\" have to work, ie screen rotates correctly when turning the screen, I don\'t want to have to type something into the konsole to do this.  Hardware buttons for zooming, changing the brightness, suspend/resume, jogdial for scrolling etc....
5) wireless extensions for the prism2 cards.
6) A decent word processor/spreadsheet file compatible with the microshaft offerings.
7) A decent web viewer.

All the above features are availible (or very soon for no. 5 with javaboys kernel)  for the cacko rom for the 760.

I would love to use the x.11 rom, but it lacks a lot of the above.

Now,  if the x.11 rom could also run the qt stuff (or vice-versa) even if I did have to re-compile some of my apps then that would be the holy grail!!!

I have tried the pocket debian, this is great for playing with, but does not even come close to the x.11 rom and you cannot run both at once! to change them over involves typing things into the console and waiting several minutes to re-start either the debian, or qtopia.  not very user friendly.

By the way, don\'t think I am ungrateful, far from it.  I love the work you guys have done ( sash especially), and I wouldn\'t have even bought a c760 if it wasn\'t for the brilliant stuff you guys are doing for the zaurus.

The x.11 rom is the future, I know this, but for now I have to stick with a qt based rom.

Well thats a tricky one.

Cacko QT roms were a major breakthrough although there were/are problems with wifi, and the look/feel (imho) is very basic. Dont get me wrong though - sash is doing great work.

Cacko X11 is incredably promising but again wifi is an issue, also the rom is very slow, and having used it - everything is very very very tiny on a small screen, I\'ve perfect eyesight but probably need to get spec\'s to use it properly.

Proto 2.5.x has a great look and feel, wifi is perfect (especialy with the javab0y patched kernel) and it does everything I need it to. Plus kismet and wellenreiter using spectrum/socket cards (and prism2 cards) are most impressive.

Having tried cacko x11 roms I had to sit back and consider if c7xx device\'s will ever be a pc substitute. I currently feel that we\'re asking too much of it to run x11 and presently believe that the \"pda\" approach is more suited to my C760.

But then who knows what\'s round the corner.

Maybe I should re-phrase that to :-
The x.11 rom is the future **for me** ,I know this, but for now I have to stick with a qt based rom.

I have had no problems getting wifi to work for me with the cacko qt roms. Javaboys kernel also *should* work with them for the wirless extensions.

Wifi wouldn\'t work for me using the supplied network tool (the name escapes me)on x.11, but I simply copied my qpewlan0 settings from /etc/pcmcia/network.opts from my sharp backup to the x.11 file and it then worked fine with wep etc.

Didn\'t try wireless extensions, but it is supposed to be based on the sharp kernel, so again javaboys kernel *should* work on that too.

The tiny fonts are not a problem for me, it\'s still useable with the zaurus 2-3 feet away, on the desk.  My eyesight is a lot better than most though.

Where I used to work I had line of sight to one of those digital clocks that displayed the temperature. It was 1/4 mile away.  All day long my colleagues would ask me what temperature it was, and I would tell them without leaving my seat.  Some of them couldn\'t even see the clock, never mind it\'s display, and thought it was some sort of trick.

I cannot see 3d images however. During a recent health and safety test at work where you had to say which light (in one of those silly machines that looked like a periscope) was in the foreground, and which was in the background, I scored 0/10.

I asked \"So what does that mean then?\".  The reply was that I am unable to judge distance very well.

I can judge how far away things are, it\'s only silly LED\'s that I have trouble with

Maybe why I could never see those 3d images from SIRDS which were all the rage at one time.

I used to think they were like \"the emperors new clothes\" one person says he can see a penguin, and everybody else follows suit, even though they can\'t see the penguin.

All I could ever see, no matter how I squinted or went crosseyed, was a load of coloured dots.

my eye doctor says my eyes are mostly ok (other than I can\'t see worth a damn) ...
but they have a tendency to \"first focus at 18 inches, and then adjust\" ..

uh...  I can\'t imagine why!

LOL - I\'ve always had 20-20 (til recently, now near 20-20), but also could never see the hidden image in those dang pictures!  It wasn\'t for a lack of trying, that\'s for sure

As for the ROMs, well, I\'m on tkcROM for my 5500 and still trying to figure a lot out.  Therefore, I\'ll hold my summary til a later time when I\'ve had more experience!

Actually, you can:

althought zdebian has apt-get ... the unstable 512mb sd makes it
virtually unusable (ever try to do a glibc upgrade, etc).

Scott
ps: running both at the same time does chew memory.

Scott,

What exactly is going on there?

I take it these are screen shots from a PC using vnc to view the zaurus screen, while also using vnc to view the debian install on the same zaurus?
