Ooh - SMSs work too - I hadn't realised you had to activate them.  Rather nifty piece of software actually.  The setup menu (bottom right of main window) dies with a segfault though.  Also, it doesn't recover if the IR connection is broken.  It would be nice if you could switch on and off the comms while the program is running.

I know about the setting menu, I don't know why it segfaults.
Is anyone using this one a laptop or a desktop and knows all about it ? Or will I have to search the gnokii archives for this ?

All tips and tricks are welcome.

As for now, I can send an sms without having to fight my mobile phone (I hate typing on it). My main goal is to connect it through bluetooth, so I dont need a flat surface any longer to place my mobile's and Z's infrared ports in the right positions.

Have fun,
Chero.

Hello !

Duuhhh since I have charge my Z (ok, no relation ...) I have this error message when I launch gnokii :

"error while loading shared libraries : libgnokii.so.2 cannot open shared object file : no such file or directory"

I have try "ipkg-link mount /mnt/card" to recreat link but it doesn't work until I re-install the package. (but at the next reboot, same error)

And when I re-install package it's like the Ir / port is locked :
Ircomm0 stale, overriding ....

What can I do please ? (have try to install it on /mnt/card and /user)
Have a nive day

Edit : I don't understand ... The Ir port seems blocked because it boucle with the message "transmitter busy" ... I have found /var/lock/ircomm0 var who seem's to lock the port, delete it but problem still ...

before I start xgnokii :
# /etc/rc.d/init.d/irda start
When I exit xgnokii :
# /etc/rc.d/init.d/irda stop

I never had a problem (only once, but then I ran ....stop and ... start). Now I do it every time, it seems to work.

I don't know much about gnokii and there doesn't seem to be any help about xgnokii available.

I've also compiled "gnocky", another gui for gnokii, but there doesn't seem to be improvement. The readme in the gnokii package talked about creating a "gnokii"-user and running gnokii as this user. Maybe that's the trick ? Will check later.

About your lib-problem after reboot. Do you make sure to leave all apps before you reboot ? Why do you reboot so often ?
There are a few packages with the behaviour you described (broken libs when not shut down properly before a reboot). This can be solved by installing those packages (or just the libs) in "/". (it doesn't seem to happen then).
I have gnokii installed on /mnt/ide and don't have this problem, but I haven't rebooted during the last few weeks.

BTW : it's not bad for your battery to interupt loading or to use during loading, if it's a Lion battery it's even bad to fully charge and fully discharge everytime. (Google)

YOU ARE A KILLER  yeah that work's with this command line ...
So with the P800 work :
- getting signal and battery
- getting contact (very slow operation, i am in 115000bps)
- dialing
I have not already try to send sms and I haven't found the way to get sms from the phone ... (I thing this GUI hasn't this fonction ...)

Yes, sure that all software are closed.
I reboot maybe one time per week ... Maybe it's because I was doing this with my palm :$

Right, I always charge pdas or phone at 70% (under the battery become too warm) and all 10 charge I make a complete discharging/ charging cycle.
But when you use your Z who is charging his battery ... the battery give power and receive power at the same time .. are you sure that is recommended ?

Take a look at the screen-shot I posted : I was sending/reading sms's. Just click on sms (at the bottom of the circle), then activate "sending and receiving sms" in the messages-menu.

I don't do this. I only reboot when something is really wrong, which happens rarely.

Don't know what is best for batteries, I'm no specialist in this. I just don't think it is bad to use the zaurus while it's on AC-power. I don't think it really drains the battery, I think it just slows down the loading-proces.
Just use it the way you like, I wouldn't want to give bad advise. I was just saying what google told me.

Have fun.

Okay I have found the option, I enable it but nothing happend ... maybe the p800 isn't compatible with this feature ...
Moreover I have say that the signal work, it was a mistake, it display always the same value, the batterie level seem's good.

Anyone has a Sony ericsson smartphone to test ?

I was caught out by the menu option to enable SMSs also.  As well as enabling that, you may have to touch on the in-box.

The battery isn't giving and receiving power at the same time - that's impossible.  The Z is taking power from the AC adaptor instead of the battery.  The adaptor will also be charging the battery simultaneously, assuming the battery is not fully charged.  (When fully charged, the Z stops charging.)  As Chero says, because the Z is taking some of the power from the adaptor, the battery is likely to be charging more slowly than normal.  This is not harmful to the battery at all - in fact, it may be beneficial.

I don't think there's any need to be so rigorous about charging at 70% and discharging fully every ten cycles.  In fact, I would guess that this would do the battery more harm than good.  Using the Z connected to the adaptor will make the battery last longer, because it is not being discharged at all by the Z.  A battery is rated for a certain number of charge/discharge cycles, but these are full cycles - it can do many more partial cycles.

As you're in France, you will be using a different AC adaptor from the one that came with the Z.  I am in the same situation as you.  I have read that it is important that this adaptor is not capable of delivering MORE than ONE AMP because this will exceed the recommended battery charging rate.

Thank's for you post ! (off topic but very usefull !)
Concerning the 70% I have read (i must re-find the link somewhere) that a research institue as said that when you charge something under 70% (okay, around 70%) the battery can become too warm ... and isn't good for is lifetime. And you must make sometimes full charge-discharge cycle altougth li-ion battery hasn't memory effect. I have make this by exemple with my smartphone, 3years of uptime and battery life still very good (about 75-80% of origin).
I'm dumm ... you have right for charging the Z while using it ... and double right when you say that you must (when it's possible) use it with adaptator.
For charging the Z I use the japanese adaptator with a 220-110, japan-france adaptator. I have a zipling for charging but never tested ... I hope that an usb port doesn't exceed 1A ...

SMS :
after you enabled the option try to send an sms (click on the "new" button or select from the menu). When sending an sms, the inbox will sync with the inbox of the mobile. (at least, that's what happended on my Z)

Search the gnokii site (or the web) about the p800. If it's fully supported, there has to be something written about it. Some small changes in settings can do miracles.

If it's not fully supported, there's always gammu and wammu. (gammu is available somewhere, I don't think wammu has been compiled for the Z yet).

Keep on trying,
Chero.
