How-to: Opera 6 On 3.5.2 (hentges)
« on: December 23, 2004, 04:03:12 pm »
Okay, I've been fiddling with this for a couple of days now, and everyone seems to have some idea or another about how to do it, but I finally got it to work.  So, here is what I did:

1) Download opera6_1.5.4_arm.ipk from the ZUG Downloads section (listed under Applications as Opera6)

2) ipkg -dest sd --force-overwrite install opera6_1.5.4_arm.ipk
(from the directory you placed the file in, obviously.  The --force-overwrite is probably --overkill, but I've installed opera6 and 7 about 931 times over the past few days, so it can't hurt)

3) ipkg-link add opera6

4) Go to the Settings tab, click "Reload Icons"

5) ln -s /opt/QtPalmtop/opera /usr/share/opera
(this will enable png files somehow...don't know, frankly don't care at this point)

6) Go to the Settings tab, click on Libraries, List, Applications, Opera Browser and okay it.

7) Go to Applications, click on Opera Browser and surf your happy heart out.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE leave a message if this works or not so that this thread can be useful!!

We need more HOW-TO documents on this stuff.  Most of this was culled from this message board, but with the *cough* wonderful *cough* search functionality and rampant thread hijacking, it was DIFFICULT to hunt down and even more difficult to sort out.

I hope this helps someone.  If helps you, and you happen to get some other PITA install to work, consider writing up something along these lines.  Good Karma and all that...

FYI...

You can dissemble an opera_6.0_arm.ipk and an opera_arm.ipk (extracted from the multimodal_arm.ipk on the IBM website). Then replace the bin, apps, buttons, ini, and start directories, and the opera.ini and control files in the opera_6.0_arm.ipk with the ones from the opera_arm.ipk, rebuild the ipk and you have an opera7.55.6079_arm.ipk.

Note: I used ipkg-utils-1.7 for this.

The rebuilt opera7.55.6079_arm.ipk will work with oz3.5.2 official or hentges... following the instructions posted by javamatte in this thread.

I can't attach this ipk because of the IBM and Opera license, but you can do this your self in about an hour or so.

It takes a little effort, but it works!

Nice work, javamatte!  I agree that we need more HOW-TOs like this, and a central place (wiki?) for them to reside.  Along those lines, can anyone talk me through the steps for getting the Hancom Office apps (the newer ones) to work on OZ 3.5.2 as well?

Thanks for the howto. It is a great help.

However it did not work. The system is a 3.5.2 upgrade over a 3.5.1. There is a dependency on oz-compat. I installed them however they are back to the old trick of not 'running'. It will attempt to start but the app doesn't open.

Are there oz-compat dependencies?

The following pkgs are loaded. Some may be older. I was not sure how to upgrade all of them.

 ipkg-link list /mnt/card/
*** Command: list
libglib-2.0-0
libid3tag0
libmad0
libogg0
libsidplay1
libstdc++6
libvorbisidec1
libxine1
opera6
opie-backup
opie-camera
opie-sh
opie-sysinfo
oz-compat
sharp-camera-support
xmms-embedded
*** Done.

Thanks,
Dan

Ok. The problem was oz-compat was not properly installed. I suggest the 'howto' be extended to work with both the graphical and the text based oz-compat. If you all agree I will add that section here and move it to the wiki.

What does this gain over the opera package from the Zug downloads?

Is it a different version?

Opera_7.55 is the latest version for arm architecture that I'm aware of. I've only used it with dial-up on a 5600 and 5500, so I hardly see any difference on OZ  using compat-libs. I should note that it seems to use more memory than the older version, but then that also seemed to be a problem with 7.3 with the compat-libs. This was just a test for me in my spare time, I will probably remove it and install opera_6 like I did with 7.3 because of the memory issues. After a bit of testing it just seems to me that opera-6 uses less memory on a 5xxx with the compat-libs. ymmv?

when i first tun opera i get the error

"opera is not responding"

would you like to force it to exit.

but then it just runs... kinda weird...

and the other problem is that when opera is running its like covered up 90% with like web page address, bookmarks, search the web using:

these windows.
how do i get rid of em.

i have used opera before but these windows have never popped up like this.

javamatte, great howto, thanks!  This worked perfectly for me. Just have one small problem, Opera doesn't respond to any of its shortcut keys.  For example, "G" does not bring up the window to type in a URL.  Don't know why, but I can live with it, got any idea why it doesn't work?  Thanks again.
