Would it be possible to add ZIP and RAR support to the file browser? Not so that it'll browse the archives as directories (God I hate windows XP for doing that), but so that you can decompress them from the GUI. Same for for .tar.bz and .tar.gz archives.

No that will have to be a seprate program or an extantion to some third-party file browser, such as Qtree explorer or other. There is no way to update built-in file browser without having source code...
