you should definitely stick with beta1. You can't neither compare beta1 with r197. The Zaurus is a touch screen AND keyboard platform, so - to me - having the touchscreen not working properly is a no-go. Since beta1 is the last release with properly working touchscreen, you have no alternative.

as simple as changing resolution before launching gpsp

if you haven't got a shortcut set, simply:
xrandr -s 0 && gpsp

Actually gpSP has been already ported to Zaurus; I used to play with it quite a lot before reflashing.

And it's extremely fast and stable

xfce4 is lovely, but icewm is way lighter. I thought fluxbox was as fast as icewm, but if you say it's similar to xfce, maybe icewm is lighter

I already tried with the kernel marked with sdboot (that is the one build as you suggested), and the result was unsuccesfull
