Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Don't Understand Oz/opie 3.5.4.1
« on: July 24, 2006, 02:06:36 pm »
I have installed OZ/Opie 3.5.4.1 and really like it as a whole.  I like the PIM approach with much more.  You guys are awesome for doing all of this.  If I ever get a clue, I wouldn't mind helping out.

Basically, the main things that I want are good PIM software (which I have with it) and GAIM (Yahoo IM), Firefox or Opera, ssh capability, ftp, ability to play mp3s/wmv/avi/mpeg4 aka DIVx, games (mahjongg, yahtzee, suduko, chess, etc..), good text editor, spreadsheet viewer, wardriving software.

I have tried these ROMS: Sharp Qtopia, pdaXrom, OZ/gpe, OZ/opie

So far, I like the OZ/opie best for my needs.

My question is:

How do I update this distribution?   I don't want to have to reinstall it all every time a new version comes out.

Plus, how do I find all of the programs that I want if I don't see them in the feed?  I am connecting to the ewi feed.

Where can you find ipks for this distro and how can you roll your own from source?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Getting Network To Work On 3.5.4.1
« on: July 15, 2006, 12:30:28 pm »
I had to set up the wireless connection on eth0 and for DHCP.  Then it worked fine.

I had read to use wlan0 but that didn't work.

I want to know how to set up the Z to use something like wififofum (http://www.aspecto-software.com/rw/applications/wififofum/)

I want to be able to find something that will pick up on networks and let me connect to them.  I am running OZ GPE.

Does anyone know of anything?

Does changing the ROM effect synching?  I tried to synch my Z with my desktop and got nowhere with it.  I did get the drivers where I could use the USP and Samba to move files back and forth but I couldn't get the synch software to work.

I downloaded the version that Sharp created for the SL-5500 in english.  Couldn't get it to work.

If I install pdaXrom, will there be any synching software with it?

Thanks

I want a ROM that can run OpenSSH because all of the servers that I admin run it.  I saw on the distro list that Open Zaurus and pdaXrom support it.   I also looked at the PIM stuff and it looked like it had more features than the Qtopia out of the box apps.

I am going to make a go of it.  I wonder if putty could run on it?

Anyone know of an all inclusive list of steps to follow when changing ROMS?

    Still Nervous        is me

Thanks for the advice.

I just got my Zaurus a month ago and have never really updated a ROM before.  I have decided that pdaXrom is what I want.

Can someone tell me what the issues are when going from qtopia to pdaXrom?

If I do that, can I go back if I want to?

Just worried that I will screw it up.

Please tell me if I should be careful about anything.  I would hate to kill it.

Thanks!

C1000/3x00 General discussions / C1000 Help

Hi, I bought a C1000 and love it!  The thought of having so many possibilities is great!

I know that you can put different ROMS on it and can install software.

I tried to take the source of a file and make an executible but I ran out of memory:(  I was thinking that if I made my own software from the source files that it would work better.

Is there a way to get the C1000 to use the SD card as processing power?

Also, is there a list somewhere for ROMS and software for this device?

I would like to know how many ROMs will work on the C1000 and what the differences are..

THANK YOU!!!!!!

I too am trying to figure out my SL-C1000.  I am confused about what programs and ROMS I could put on here.  It runs Qtopia.

Is it possible to install programs on the SD card?

Thanks for posting how to change the orientation...

I want a Zaurus REALLY bad.  I am so sick of the limited abilities of my Axim X50v.  I upgraded to Windows Mobile 5 and now Dell acts like they won't support my device with any new updates.  Plus, the dumb thing has program crashes all the time.

I want to be able to actually connect to a network and be able to do something on it.

My hesitation in which Zaurus to buy lies with the possibility of the upcoming model having a better screen.  I have read many reviews that the screen washes out when viewed outside in the daylight.  I know that Sharp has the technology to upgrade the screens and I am thinking it might be smarter to get a Zaurus SL-C1000 which is currently cheaper and wait until the next one comes out.

Does anyone know what types of SD cards can be used with it?  I was thinking of getting a 4 GB card.

Does anyone know if the C1000s can run the openbsd OS for Zaurus?

Thanks!!!
