These files are also contained in the SLC3200SYSPART.zip .
Copy these files on a CF card, boot your Zaurus to command line
using the "D"+"B" + PwrOn procedure.
Mount /hdd1 and /hdd2 manually. Insert the CF card and copy
the files to the right places (the CF card is accessable at /mnt/cf ).
Then reboot and everything should be fine.

Marc,

Thank you very much for your reply.
All is working well now.
I was having a great deal of trouble getting things to mount and umount which made it obviously hard to move the files.
In fact, once I had performed the steps in your readme correctly all the volumes mounted correctly. That done, I could reboot, ctrl-C past the "HDD not initialised" error and open Konsole.
From there it was easy to umount hdd1 and mount -w /dev/hdc1 hdd1. Then all the volumes were read and write, and I was able to copy the files as per your instructions.

Everything working! Thanks for the help.
Sorry if I've been a bit of a dolt.

Ok,

If it's so that I don't need any specific files in the hdd directories then why is it that trisoft's file offering exists at all?

Here's the complete readme from the file I downloaded from them:

Contents of the system-partitions for the SL-C3200

TRIsoft / Marc Stephan / April 11th, 2006

Use the information in this document at your own risk.

TRIsoft is not liable for any damages that may result from

these informations.

SL-C3200 HDD-Partition table:

/dev/hda1  Start 1  End 20  Blocks 10048+  id 83 System Linux

/dev/hda2  Start 21 End 40  Blocks 10080  id 83 System Linux

/dev/hda3  Start 41 End 11905 Blocks 5979960 id c System Win95 FAT32 (LBA)

Note:

While using the fdisk on the Zaurus, double check that you set the

correct parameters for the drive. They have to be:

16 heads / 63 sectors/track / 11905 cylinders
All of this I have done once again skipping nothing.
Quote
Format the partitions with:

mke2fs -j /dev/hda1

mke2fs -j /dev/hda2

mkfs.vfat -F 32 /dev/hda3
This is done again also, skipping nothing.
Now if I reboot I get the error "HDD not initialised."
Quote
/hda1 and /hda2 are 9.5 MB partitions. Each one contains a ".sys" and

a "lost+found" directory. The contents of the .sys-directories are

in this file.

Files in /hdd1/.sys :

hdimage2.tgz  (2149 Bytes, contains japanese web-bookmarks - hurray !)

hdlist1.dat (85 Bytes, no clue what it's good for)

Files in /hdd2/.sys :

contlist.dat (74327 Bytes)

hdlist2.dat (1264 Bytes)

hdlist3.dat (1519 Bytes)
This is great, but how do I get these files into the appropriate places?
Quote
The Zaurus will display an error like "HDD not initialized" if the

directories and files are missing. Just restoring the partition table

won't make an SL-C3200 happy.

Hope this clarifies. I should have just posted this in the first place.

Thanks if anyone can help.

That page you say is about 3100's is actually about 3000's... and the 3000's are *very* different to the 3100/3200.
Yes, I've been trying to decipher what's relevant and what's not. The mention of a 3100 is a typo sorry. I did know that there are differences, but I got some useful info from this page anyway. Is it preserved anywhere other than the internet archive?
Quote
See Meanie's site for more info; essentially on the 3100/3200 hdd1 and hdd2 are empty 9Mb ext2 partitions. hdd1 can contain a recovery tarball but that isn't required to be there.
This is the part that confuses me. I'll have look at Meanie's. I've been there before, but it's long and I must have missed it. Thanks.

Don't get the hda and hdd mixed up... isn't hda an inserted CF drive?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=147030\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Well as far as I understand /hdd1 is the mounted volume and /dev/hda1 is the source file/hardware for the mount. What the sources are can change depending on what cards are inserted when the Z boots. So if no card is inserted hdd1 is /dev/hda1. If a CF card is inserted the card gets /dev/hda1 and hdd1 gets /dev/hdc1. This way the card comes earlier in the boot process making it possible to boot from an image on the card.

Hi,

I have a 3200 which I have put through the changes of three ROMs now. Started out Sharp, went to OZ then to pdaXrom and full circle sort of to Cacko, which I have decided I like.

The PDAXROM install required repartitioning disks. This caused the erasure of some key files in the hdd partitions. That causes the "hdd not initialised" error at boot time. Ctrl-c gets me past it.

Among other bits of information, I found a file at Trisoft
http://www.trisoft.de/en_c3200howto.htm under "Restore the harddisk." In that file are some instructions to for partitioning. and some vague information about files that are missing.

I also read this, which is only available on the wayback machine it would seem. It's about 3100s.
http://web.archive.org/web/20050205134428/...fag.com/zaurus/

So I wiped the Z, I repartitoned according to the info at trisoft,  NAND restored,I ran the install for Cacko and all seemed well but now hdd1 mounts as read only, hdd2 makes an error at boot and does not mount. hdd3 seems fine.

I'm very confused about these files that belong in /hdd1/ and /hdd2/. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to get them there.

Is the 3200 supposed to read this from cf at the first boot? because it does not appear to have done so.

In the diagnostic menu I see something called HDD restore. What is that?

at boot the screen reads:
Code: [Select]
EXT3-fs mounted filesystem with ordered data mode
mounted /hdd1
VFS: Can't find ext3 filesystem on dev ide0(3.2).
mount: mounting /dev/hda2 on /hdd2 failed: Invalid argument
HDD2 Error!! qstart check battery !

Control-c continues boot but hda1 is read-only and hda2 won't mount. This results in further problems.

Thanks if you can help, or even if you can't.

I want to thank Marcin Juszkiewicz for building the Feed Browser recently announced on the OZ site.

I have been wishing for this tool. It's been needed. Thanks.

By way of a wrap up for this thread ...

In the end I gave up in despair and reloaded OZ/Opie from scratch. Immediately everything worked perfectly, though php is still not working with cherokee. Admittedly I have not tried very hard to make it work as yet. In fact, not at all.

It would seem that I had changed some esoteric setting somewhere, but which and where I could not tell you. I naturally insist that I made no foolish changes, and others will smile knowingly and insist that I did. We will never know.

I thank everyone for their efforts to help in this.

zedkatuf2, if I discover the answer to the php thing I'll post it here.

As a way of better explaining myself here are some screen shots.

Note how in poertrait the text is one way, and in landscape it is another.

This is not a great moment in design, but it's kind of interesting that you can make stuff look right by using the hidden parts of the image.

The last attachment is the image itself.

I too have the same problem. All I want to do is change my existing wallpaper one one of the ones listed. I have an SL5600 running the Sharp ROM. Som eidea of where to find these files would be a big help. Thx.
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Running the Sharp rom you can go here and get all manner of stuff and info.

[a href=\"http://www.zaurusthemes.org/]http://www.zaurusthemes.org/[/url]

Even if you do not wish to use these themes, by uzipping them you will see where everything goes on the Sharp ROM. You can even change the background for the clock and stuff. Quite nice.
It's not much help to me I'm running OZ/Opie and that's a different animal.

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=138397\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Well,
I'm glad it's a linux device, and it probably will do all those things right out of the box, which a Zaurus does not always do. Sometimes you have to work for your Zaurus, sometimes it works for you.
As for the Mylo, I suspect that you won't be able to run a web server, ruby, perl, python, and PHP on it, write your own scripts and have shell access without some hacking and cracking. A Zaurus does do all of those things for the price of the time it takes to install and configure them.
I think you either love or hate a Zaurus, and I think different people have different reasons for owning them. It's not your typical consumer device, so asking whether Mylo will compete with it is in some ways redundant. From a purely marketing point of view, yes. It does compete.
..... But I probably wouldn't buy one. Why?
For reasons I cannot easily explain I need a handheld device that will run what appears to be a commercial grade web server. It's my kind of toy. Some kids liked the Hot Wheels cars, I liked the Tonka trucks. The Zaurus is the Tonka truck of handhelds, and I wouldn't own another one.

that was confusing.

did you try a 640x640 image?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=138402\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Sorry if it was confusing. That's actually why I made the template. The template makes it crystal clear what's going on.

As for the 640x640 option, I found that when I loaded a 640x640 image Opie scaled the image to fit the display height and tiled off to the right.

I toyed around with a few different sizes, but I never really figured out what the rule is. Under what circumstances does Opie scale the image? I don't know, so I came up with this.

There may also be a better, more optimal size that requires less effort than this. This trick just exploits an oddity in Opie to some advantage, however dubious.

If someone's got a better way that really works I'd love to hear it.

This really works, look:
This image appears to be seamless, and looks slightly different in landscape and portrait even though it's tiling and hiding portions of the image.

I was messing about trying to make the desktop background work well under Opie, and I got very confused about the size of the image. Then I realised what was happening.

If this is repeat information for you then move on, but I found it not to be immediately transparent.

1) The background is scaled to the width of the display as it is oriented when you set it in the launcher.
This means that if you set your 640x480 landscape image as the background while in portrait mode it will be scaled to 480 wide and tiled. When you switch to landscape orientation this setting sticks, so you'll get tiles of your image to the right and bottom of the screen

If your image is oriented to landscape then set the display to landscape before setting the image as your background.

2) Parts of a 640x480 image will always be hidden or tiled no matter what orientation you are looking at.
If you are looking at an image in landscape the top of the image starts just below the tab bar at the top of the screen and the bottom of the image is hidden by the menu bar at the bottom of the screen.
In portrait mode this bottom part of the image is revealed, a portion of the top of the image is tiled below it and roughly a quarter of the right hand side is hidden.

Well this is a lot to think about and all I wanted was an easy way to make my own desktop backgrounds. What's needed is a template!
So I made one.

This was done using OZ/Opie 3.5.4.1

Download this file to your Z with a 640x480 screen and set it as a background by editing a tab in the launcher. When you set it make sure you are in landscape mode.
You will see the rulers in the image on the top and left, several red guide lines, and some descriptions of how different areas of the image will be displayed. Once you see how things work you can open the file in your favorite image editor and layer stuff right over it.

This works great on my 3200 and makes it possible for me to begin designing desktops that work well and don't get skewed or scaled. You can also take advantage of the hiding and tiling to create layouts that work in both modes.

Please let me know if this works for you or not. In a while I can do one for the smaller screens. I have a 5500 as well.

Hope all this is useful despite the frivolity of it all.

That you've already got. [edit] minus the MySQL [/edit]It's already installed on my machine, ready to go.

try: ipkg list | grep php

Incidentally, I can install Ruby too which comes from the same feed as Cherokee, but Cherokee still hates me. I also appear to be the only person in the universe who is unable to make this work. Gee that makes me feel good.

Do you have the upgrades feed available (i.e. is it listed in one of the .conf files in /etc/ipkg/ or in /etc/ipkg.conf)?
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Thanks for the responses folks.
Lardman, yes, after changing the conf files around to point to different mirrors I reinstated the default .conf, which has the same feed that Koen is using in his install listing above, and ran ipkg update again. No dice.

Koen, how interesting that you can do this and I cannot. I just noticed that the Cherokee version in your listing is different from mine. Wierd.

You: Installing cherokee (0.5.3-r1) to root...
Me:  Installing cherokee (0.5.4-1) to root...

That's even when I'm pointing ipkg directly to the file in your listing:
ipkg install [a href=\"http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/mirror/www.openzaurus.org/official/unstable/3.5.4.1/feed/upgrades/cherokee_0.5.3-r1_arm.ipk]http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/mirror/www.op....5.3-r1_arm.ipk[/url]

This is very odd.

Thanks again for your time. I'll need to go away and poke at this until I can figure out what's wrong. I certainly seems as though the problem is on my Z. I'll let you know what happens.

Hi,
This topic is migrating from here:
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?act=f...post&pid=137520

I've been trying various methods of installing the web server Cherokee (recently included in the feeds) on to my 3200 running OZ 3.5.4.1/Opie. I had started by trying to do it by hand. When the feed files emerged I tried that, but all with precious little luck.

I have run ipkg update, switched feeds to a different mirror, tried downloading the files to my own feed, tried expanding the ipks and remaking them. All without joy.

The file I am using is: 3.5.4.1/feed/upgrades/cherokee_0.5.3-r1_arm.ipk
This is the only file I could find, but it's in "upgrades" so there may be another file but I cannot find it for the life of me.

Is there another file that I have missed, and that is not being picked up by ipkg?

-------------------------------| console listing |--------------------------------
# ipkg install cherokee
Installing cherokee (0.5.4-1) to root...

OpenEmbedded can build cherokee, and iirc hrw already added it to the feeds. If not, ask for it to be included.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=137400\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Well when I started this topic, and when I started trying to build an ipk there was no cherokee in the feeds, but there is now. Awsome.

Thanks Koen, and whoever put that in the feed as well.

The only problem is that the files appear to be in some way corrupt.
ipkg says it's not available from any configured src.
I downloaded the files and gzip says it can't recognize the format as does stuffit expander
tried ar:
ar -xv cherokee_0.5.3-r1_arm.ipk
ar: debian-binary/: No such file or directory
ar: data.tar.gz/: No such file or directory
ar: control.tar.gz/: No such file or directory

We'll get there. I guess I should start posting this in OZ/Common

Thanks again.
