C1000/3x00 General discussions / Powermanga
« on: October 31, 2006, 03:37:27 pm »
I'm running Cacko 1.23 C3k beta.  I first had the problem where the music plays but the screen turns white.  Then I modified the shell script that executes powermanga.  Instead of "powermanga --320" I changed it to "powermanga --640" and it worked.  The only issues are that it's not correctly centered on the screen (the bottom of the screen wraps around so it's at the top) and it's also very slow.

Quote
i managed to get powermanga running by modifying some files.  It ran nicely for a moment and then it stoped working.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pdaxrom B3 For C3000
« on: October 26, 2006, 04:40:01 pm »
I tried flashing to pdaXrom 1.1.0beta1 for C3k (beta 2).  I tried it out for about 1-2 hours and then decided to switch back to Cacko.  I applied Meanie's fixes but I could never get my Z to properly restore.  I suspended by using the menu function or the on/off button.  Then I waited about a minute or so for everything to settle down.

When I hit the on/off button to restore the Z, I saw the HDD light go on for a few seconds but after I waited, nothing else happened for at least a minute.  Then I hit the on/off button again.  Sometimes nothing happened but other times the screen would appear again but everything was frozen.  The only way to get the Z working again was to hit the reset button in the battery compartment.

I use a CF Ethernet card with my C3000.  Someone else reported a similar problem with suspend/restore, reported here.  I think I may have tried it with my CF Wifi card with similar results.  But I gave up because even though the Sharp/Cacko ROM is old, at least I can get it to work without too much hassle.

I was sorry to see this because I've read a lot about pdaXrom and I really wanted to use it.  But at least for me, suspend/restore was a showstopper.

I had to follow these instructions to restore my own C3000 because I had flashed pdaXrom beta 2 on it but it didn't work well so I wanted to go back to Cacko.  Note that I had previously replaced my 4 GB MicroDrive with a 4 GB CF.

The pdaXrom software offered to repartition my MicroDrive back to the factory layout so I said yes.  When I tried installing the Cacko software, the installation failed.  It complained about /hdd1 running out of space.  I had no idea what was going on so I decided to try following the restore instructions from Step 1 including the NAND restore, etc.  Then I rebooted the C3000 by pressing D+B and then powering up.

I then faithfully followed these instructions:

    # sfdisk -uC /dev/hdc <<EOF
    # 0,203,83
    # ,816,83
    # ,6916,c
    # EOF

I then reformatted the partitions and then tried installing Cacko again.  The installation program complained again that /hdd1 was out of space.  So obviously the installation failed.

After further investigation, I realized that the numbers provided above are too low by a factor of 2.  So I had to double the numbers to get partitions that were large enough to contain the installation.  For example, my first line was 0,406,83, etc.  This is why the pdaXrom program that tried to restore my factory partitions failed - I think it was using the numbers listed above which are too low for my Z.

Does anyone know why I had to do this?  Does it have anything to do with the fact that my MD was replaced by a CF card?  I'm just glad that I was able to install Cacko again.  I thought my Z was broken for sure.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pdaxrom B3 For C3000
« on: October 25, 2006, 05:16:01 pm »
I believe that C3000 pdaXrom beta 2 is actually based on 1.1.0beta1.  The fact that it is "beta 2" is because ThC released a beta based on 1.1.0beta1, and then he fixed some bugs so he released another beta (also based on 1.1.0beta1).

I also believe that 1.1.0beta1 uses hard float so any pdaXrom applications that use soft float will not be compatible.  I don't know when pdaXrom switched over to soft float from hard so I can't say when the cutoff point is for application compatibility.

In people's opinion, how reliable or flakey is the suspend feature in pdaXrom?  I have heard some people say that as long as you use the menu feature (as opposed to using the on/off button) and you suspend when there isn't heavy disk activity then the feature is pretty reliable.  But I have heard nothing definitive one way or the other.

Danboid,

I'm running Cacko 1.23b1 on my C3000 and I'm considering the move to pdaXrom beta 2.  One reason I'm holding back is this suspend bug - even when your HDD light stayed on, do you think your HDD was constantly spinning or was this more of an annoyance?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=144750\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

The HDD isn't spinning constantly.
I had it often, also with Cacko ROM, that on suspend, the HDD LED did not turn off.
But this does no hard, except for a few milliamps more power drain in suspend.

Another question:
C3000 pdaXrom beta2: Is it fully compatible with all the 1.1.0beta3 (for 3100 etc.) feeds and packages?
In other words: Can I use the C3000 beta2 version as a basis for a system I have now built upon 1.1.0beta3 on a C3100?

Thanks
daniel

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pdf Viewing Alternatives
« on: October 25, 2006, 03:11:18 pm »
Does the poppler package for epdfview provide the ability to read PDF tags?  I think this is the same as what zi99y describes as viewing the docs in plain text.  Tags strip away all of the formatting and provide you with the text of the document.

I'm thinking about switching over to pdaXrom from Cacko.  The lack of a good PDF reader that can read tags is one of the main factors holding me back.  :    I took a look at xpdf and couldn't find any capability to read PDF tags.

Hi all,

I just had a few days in a whirlwind of trashing my Z and reflashing with some of the other choices of distro available. Cacko was nice, but software is limited to qtopia stuff and I didn't like the idea of running XQt making the apps I'm used to slower, so I ended up heading back to Beta 3 (tried the latest r121 but too many probs).

Basically, I am now confident that Pdaxrom is the best distro (for my purposes), credit to the devvers

But one thing I discovered that the sharp based roms have is GPDF2 (I think) which is a fast pdf viewer, and has a mode to view the docs in plain text - which is just perfect for a pda! Getting rid of the stupid page margins and inefficient formatting is just what is needed. Coming back to Pdaxrom I can find only 1 pdf viewer - xpdf! Which is pretty basic really, the interface is antiqated and it's not very fast with large files.

I realise the text viewing thing would only work with properly formatted pdfs - not ones that are just a compilation of bitmaps.

I have tried epdfview many times but always falls short demanding "libpoppler-glib.so.1" which I can find no evidence of. Since I've not heard much fuss about it I can't imagine it's much better than xpdf.

-----------------------

So, the question is - Are there any other alternatives, and is there a text-style pdf viewer that can be compiled for pdaxrom?

thanks

Danboid,

I'm running Cacko 1.23b1 on my C3000 and I'm considering the move to pdaXrom beta 2.  One reason I'm holding back is this suspend bug - even when your HDD light stayed on, do you think your HDD was constantly spinning or was this more of an annoyance?

Also, did your desktop shortcuts and icons disappear when you were running a file manager other than Rox?

Quote
Reaper- see post #2 in this thread. Please share your pdaxrom/c3000 and then your NAND upgrade experiences with us.

Glorin- in effect b3 has already been made, kind of. The HOWTO is there already, see post #1. I want B3 so that new c3k/pdax users don't have to spend a full weekend applying fixes and patches to get it running properly- there should be no need for lengthy howtos or guides- and hopefully we can get rid of that nasty suspend problem. Thats the biggest problem I think and will probably require someone with much more knowledge of the kernel than I possess. Of course, if that bug has been there for years now then it may never get fixed

I'm most interested to hear what Thc, Meanie and sash have to say about this seeing as they all know more about this than I do.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Dosbox For Z
« on: October 21, 2006, 11:02:56 pm »
Thanks, I got it working.  I had installed it to /hdd3 and used ipkg-link to establish symlinks.  But I think the C3000 doesn't like that very much.  When I installed it directly without symlinks, it works OK.

Quote
I have verified that on C3000 dosbox should be working.
Have you noticed that the screen is blinking? Press cancel to ease it, then you will be able to see Dosbox running.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Dosbox For Z
« on: October 21, 2006, 09:40:58 pm »
Jon,

Did you ever get dosbox working?  I'm running Cacko 3000 Beta 1.23 on my C3000.  I previously installed dosbox_0.6.3-3_arm.ipk and libstdc6_1.2.2_arm.ipk and then created a symlink from /usr/lib/libstdc++-3-libc6.1-2-2.10.0.so to /usr/lib/libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3.

When I execute the rundosbox command from the command line, the screen fades to white and then everything freezes.  None of the keys respond including cancel and home.  Since I've run the command from an ssh session, I can hit ctrl-z to interrupt the program (but ctrl-c doesn't work).  But I can't run any command to get the video back so I'm forced to reboot.

Here are the messages I see on the command line:

Display size = 480x640
CONFIG:Loading settings from config file dosbox.conf
QT_GetMachine: /proc/deviceinfo/product is 'SL-C3000'
 detected machine is 'Sharp SL-C3000'
QT_GetRotation: Read spec from '/tmp/qtembedded-root/QtEmbedded-0.spec'
 Rot=0, Qvga=0
QT_SetVideoMode: SL-C700 Style is Input style
QT_SetVideoMode: argSize=640x400
QT_SetVideoMode: qteSize=640x480
QT_SetVideoMode: fbSize=640x480
QT_SetVideoMode: qteRotation=0
QT_SetVideoMode: userRotation=-1
QT_SetVideoMode: sdlRotation=0
QT_SetVideoMode: qteKeyRotation=0
QT_SetVideoMode: sdlKeyRotation=0
MIDI:Opened device:none

It repeats everything from the first "QT_GetMachine" downward two more times.  Does anyone have any ideas?  I'd really like to get DOS working on my Z.

I just installed dosbox_0.6.3-3_arm.ipk onto my C3100.
I also have previously installed libstdc6_1.2.2_arm.ipk
I don't have Meanie's pdaxqtrom installed.
This version is supposed to run without x11 or pdaxqtrom, isn't it?

When running dosbox from the icon, or from the commandline, it opens a black screen, which looks like dosbox, but my Z is completely frozen.
The cancel button does nothing. None of the keys respond.
I must open the battery compartment, and reset my Z to get it running again.
The commandline launch didn't show any errors.

Thank you,
Jon

What happens when you hit ctrl-C after seeing the hdd3 error?  I got this error when I changed hdd3 from FAT to ext3 without changing the mount program.  But I was able to hit ctrl-c to move past this so I could at least boot up the Zaurus.  It wasn't a perfect boot because a bunch of stuff didn't work but at least I could get to the console.

try here, you would know what happened and how to proceed, specially the last post.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=144451\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I don't know who dreamed up the routine for getting into single user mode but I assume he must have been from another planet as it appears to require 3 arms!

I managed eventually, with help in holding down keys, to get a linux prompt and ran fdisk. The three partitions were there but it reminded me that I had changed the third partition from VFAT to Ext3 and I assumed that would be the problem causing the 'hdd3 error'. I deleted and re-created the partion as VFAT(LBA) and formated it with 'mkfs.vfat -F 32 /dev/hda3' which I hoped would put things right. Wrong!

I still get the 'hdd3 error'. Any more advice anyone? Please!

X/Qt / Installing Pdaxrom 1.1.0beta1 Apps On Pdaxqtrom
« on: October 20, 2006, 12:28:37 am »
Is the xqt feed still available?  When I go to http://mail.pdaxrom.org/1.1.0beta1/XQt/, it gives me an error message that the page is not found.  I tried looking for the URL in www.archive.org to see if it had been archived but it wasn't there either.

Quote
in my ipk-tools package, there is a utility called compatipk
you can use unpackipk to extract an ipk file
then use compatipk which tries to change the pdaxrom directory structure for the ipk into a more qtopia friendly directory structure
and then use makeipk to repackage the files, ie:

unpackipk blah.ipk
compatipk blah
makeipk blah

of course this is not foolproof. it just tries, but may fail to do anything.

also, pdaxrom uses softfloat wheras sharp/cacko and hence pdaxqtrom uses hardfloat.
pdaxrom can run both hardfloat and softfloat compiled binaries, but the sharp/cacko can only run the ones using hardfloats.
older pdaxrom apps were hardfloat whereas the newer ones are all softfloat. that's why sashz made the special xqt feed which are all compiled with hardfloats.
also, beside the directory structure being slightly different, pdaxrom also uses glibc 2.2.5 whereas sharp/cacko use glibc 2.2.2 most apps only use glibc 2.0 or glibc 2.2 features so most apps will work. however, some use 2.2.3 or 2.2.5 and those won't work because  2.2.2 is what what sharp/cacko has.
you will need to get the source code for those and compile them using my zgcc compiler.
it can compile most of the pdaxrom apps, but some do require a 3.4.5 compiler and won't compile. for those you will need to build a cross compiler to compile. pdaxrom has a hardfloat cross compiler as well, but it generates glibc 2.2.5 binaries

Sharp ROMs / Cacko 3k Beta1:installed Packages List; Mount Ext3
« on: October 19, 2006, 02:00:09 am »
I found a working rc.rofilesys in /root/etc/rc.d.  But this is only after I had given up on reformatting /dev/hda3 as ext3.  I kept it as FAT but shrunk it to a small size, and I created /dev/hda4 as a large ext3 partition and I'm using that instead.  I mount it at /mnt/hdd4 rather than alter the read-only root filesystem and create /hdd4.  I added a new line to /etc/fstab to mount the partition at boot time.

I'm trying to create symlinks that point to /mnt/hdd4.  So far I've done this with /tmp and /home/zaurus.  I'd like to also do it with /home/etc and /home/root/modules because I would like to install some more kernel modules and /home is so small.  Do you see any problem with this?  And are there other directories that I could move too?

Quote
/home/root has Applications, Documents, Settings, modules, systeminfo.  I don't see etc here.

/etc is symlinked to /home/etc.  /home/etc/rc.d/rc.rofilesys does exist, but when I said it's basically empty, I meant the only line in the file is "#exit 0".

I just got a C3000.  I installed Cacko C3K Beta1 on it and erased the user portion just as the instructions said.  Everything works great but I'm trying to get a list of installed packages and I'm not able to.  ipkg doesn't have a "list_installed" option and the GUI package manager doesn't list any installed packages.  Also, I looked in /usr/lib/ipkg/info and /usr/lib/ipkg/lists and I couldn't find anything.

This is unrelated to the packages question but does anyone know how to mount /hdd3 as an ext3 filesystem?  I used fdisk to delete the FAT partition in /dev/hda3 and then created a new Linux partition.  Then I used mkfs.ext2 -j to format /dev/hda3 as an ext3 partition.

The root filesystem is read only so I used "mount -o remount,rw /" to make it read write and then changed /sbin/hddmount so it would mount /dev/hda3 to /hdd3 as an ext3 partition.  But when I boot up, it complains that /dev/hda3 isn't a valid FAT partition.  The boot sequence basically freezes so I have to hit ctrl-c to let the boot continue but obviously something isn't right here.  It seems like it's still somehow executing the old /sbin/hddmount to mount a FAT partition, or maybe the command is somewhere else.  /etc/rc.d/rc.rofilesys is basically empty so that's not the culprit.

Any ideas?  For now, I made /dev/hda3 back into a VFAT partition so at least the Z will boot up correctly.

When you run into dead links like this, it's always good to check the Internet Archive at www.archive.org.  The site goes around and tries to archive everything on the Web so when links die and pages become unavailable, you can see if the page you want has been archived.

Fortunately this site was archived.  You can find it at:

Greetings to everybody!

I remember pumping my SL-C3000 back to life when it was almost gone into a paperweight. The beautifull piece of information was shared in here http://www.xlfag.com/zaurus/ - titled "Restorating SL-C3000 from a scratch".

Now I'm not that desperate, actually have OZ running. However because of some minor instability and problems with WLAN, I'd like to turn back to Cacko. I face the same error msgs as once before. Back then I got my Zaurus back following the link abobe. But now the LINK IS DEAD.

So the question: has anybody a copy of the information "Restorating SL-C3000 from a scratch" ? I believe I woudn't be the only one missing that piece of info.

Big thanks,
Mersault

How did you do the kernel upgrade?

I'm using the 3.5.4.1-rc2-T2 Hentges ROM and I tried upgrading to the 3.5.4.2-rc2 kernel but it complained on bootup that it was expecting 3.5.4.2.  So I had to downgrade the kernel back to 3.5.4.1-rc2-T2.
