New products and alternatives / New Zaurus Successor?

btw, is it just me, or is there a wave of zaurus sellers? I sense that this is in anticipation of or a response to the whole series of kohjinsha and sub-lite notebook that is going for cheap.

One thing I do on my zaurus akita that I don't do on my kohjinsha is to write my diary or journal before I sleep at night; sure the korigami is very small and light for a tabletpc or notebook, but still a bundle to hold and prop up while typing in bed. With my Z, I can thumb away laying in bed and  it's quite ok.

How are you guys using your Kohjinsha?
I invested in a Kohjinsha SH6 just before the announcement of the SH8 but have been extremely impressed.  Couldnt wait to get rid of the Vista, and now running Fedora 7 which was an easy install even to get the integral wireless working with the rt73 serialmonkey driver, and touchscreen with the PenMount 6000 Driver.

Still use Zaurus with PdaxII13 but use Notecase on both Zaurus and the Kohjinsha for capturing meeting notes.  The Kohjinsha has effectively replaced my work laptop as far easier to lug around for presentations, but the Zaurus remains an invaluable work tool for on the fly notes in confined spaces such as trains etc.  It is an excellent combination of mobile tools especially as no Windows needed.

The only gripe is the battery life, should have gone for the high capacity battery.  Seriously considering replacing the internal hard disk with a more power friendly option as did not go for the SSD version.  Have already had the Kohjinsha completely apart as accidently triggured the BIOS password like a total idiot, and had to remove the battery on the Motherboard to reset the BIOS.  Luckily there are a few good articles on the web that give advice on this nerve racking experience.  Not sure what the best option would be for the disk replacement at this stage, but getting access to the drive is not that difficult

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Very Frustrating

OK, I am having major issues.  I just got my C-3200 in the mail today and decided to put OZ/GPE (3.5.4.1) on it.  This is my first zaurus but I have used linux for 10 years.  I repartitioned and flashed per the wiki and it looked like everything went ok.  After I log in, I get all kinds of weird behavior.  If I reset the clock to the correct time, it doesn't go (It does say settings saved though)  Then it will randomly reset itself by a few hours sometimes taking the hour I specified and sometimes the minute.  Whenever I edit the network settings and hit save it says no write access to network configuration.  I even tried telling it that users could change all settings.  I have tried flashing multiple times with no result.  I even recreated the filesystems on hda2 and hda3 and reflashed to no avail.

Any ideas on how to fix this?  Is this normal?  Is OZ really this unstable?

Have you tried just logging out and logging back in on GPE as the clock is not updated until you have done this.

I found that GPE required a user to do a lot more configuration from editing files via the command line than the other ROMs or even OPIE, but I loved the way you could install more powerful applications such as abiwiord and gnumeric.

For GPE I had to configure the wifi access by manually editing editing the following file  /etc/network/interfaces

Today I have the best of both worlds as I have installed OPIE and GPE on the same device, and recommend this combination.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Gnumeric Default Row Height
« on: August 07, 2006, 07:24:23 am »
I am using Gnumeric on OZ 3.5.4.1 GPE, and currently when opening a new instance I have the default font size set to Sans,Normal,10 which is larger than the default row height "12.750"

Obviously I can reset the row height for the entire sheet to "20.25" but ideally I would like to be able to change the defaut so all cells automatically are correctly sized height wise.

Anyone got any ideas of where the default settings are storred for gnumeric so I can edit the relevant file

Thanks

I still have a minor problem with a number of applications such as gnumeric and qpdf reporting that No D-Bus daemon is running.

I have checked the all the relevant packages are loaded

dbus-1
gnome-vfs-dbus
gconf-dbus

There is a DBUS service defined  /usr/share/dbus-1/services/gconf.service
[D-BUS Service]
Names=org.gnome.GConf;
Exec=/usr/libexec/gconfd-2

Has anyone seen this before or know how to resolve

Thanks

so did I
I get the same problem with qpdf on GPE and OZ 3.4.5.1 with my sl-c3100.

For some unexplained reason the problem has now gone away, I did order a reboot from a su shell session and earlier a log off from the system menu, but since then both gnumeric and qpdf are working a treat.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Gnumeric - Error Loading

I've installed gnumeric_1.6.3-r0 on OZ/GPE (3.5.4.1) from the 3.5.4.1 feed.  When I try to run gnumeric it says "(gnumeric:14970): Gdk WARNING **:  gdk_property_get():  length value as wapped in calculation (did you pass G_MAXLONG?)"
Then it just sits there and won't load anything, I've waited as much as 10 minutes and it won't load.
Does gnumeric need recompiled or can I just edit a file to fix this problem?

Update; must have been some coflicting libraries, because it started working all of the sudden  ?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=135274\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I had the same problem when running from the desktop or from the terminal as a normal user, but launched fine when in a root terminal session.  I used the same modification as for sylpheed in one of the other topics

"In case somebody else has been struggling with the same problem, this is what I did:

Log in as root

cd /var
chmod 777 tmp"

Then Gnumeric loads ok
