Debian / Apt-get Errors

#1 'm almost sure that there's a post a little bit under this with a package to solve this problem with libdirectfb and libts.
Found it (it is here for anyone else who finds this first).  There appear to be some issues with the solution (I get the "error while loading shared libraries: libts-1.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory", although it appears to be a problem only if you need to recalibrate, e.g., if you try to use XFCE4 after installing), but hopefully the incredibly hardworking Zdevil will figure out a solution that is escaping us mere mortals.

#2 It should a matter of trying after solving libdirectfb and libts issues.

P.D.:  I'm planning a fresh install soon from tarball, I've mesed up lots of things trying to understand how things work. I've delayed it waiting for the new tarball ZDevil was preparingbut my Z is almost unusable right now, If i get to overpass this situations I'll try to post it here asap.

#2 is as you say- solve #1, and #2 is resolved.

I've re-installed several times now after making a mess tinkering.  Each time I learn a bit more, including how to dig a deeper hole for myself.

Thanks for your help!

Debian / New Testing Packages (armel)
« on: May 01, 2008, 01:23:08 pm »
A lot of great stuff!  Is there any chance we could get all of these into the http://matrixmen.free.fr/zaurus/debian/ repository to make installation easier?  Some are, but quite a few are not. Keep up the great work all!

Debian / Up To Date Repositories For Eabi Debian
« on: April 30, 2008, 01:45:03 pm »
I think this is more up-to-date for EABI armel sources:

OESF wiki for Debian on EABI post install tips (www.oesf.org/index.php?title=1-For_Debian_EABI).

By the way, I still haven't figured out why everyone seems to not include the security update repository when the mention what to install.  Anyone know the reason?  Just curious as someone new to Debian.

Debian / Apt-get Errors
« on: April 30, 2008, 01:35:32 pm »
I've been running into a couple of problems trying to install or upgrade software that I'm hoping you all can help with.   First,  I'm using the EABI-armel with a yonggun kernel (2.6.24.3) on an SL-C3200, and have set up to run sid/unstable in my sources (main, contrib, & non-free), plus the repository for some of the debs posted in this forum.  And, yes, I've run apt-get update (w/ no error messages), apt-get upgrade, and apt-get dist-upgrade with these repositories in the source.list file.

Problem #1: libts-0.0-0 error
A couple programs I am trying to install have a dependency for version >=1.0 (e.g., XFCE4, which depends on libdirectfb-1.0-0, which in turn depends on libts* >=1.0).  When I try to install the appropriate package (libts-0.0-0_1.0-4_armel.deb), either on its own or as a dependency of one of these other programs, I get an error that it is trying to overwrite /usr/lib/ts/collie.so.  The error is as follows:

dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/libts-0.0-0_1.0-4_armel.deb (--upack):
trying to overwrite '/usr/lib/ts/collie.so', which is also in package libts-1.-0
Errors were encountered while processing:
   /var/cache/apt/archives/libts-0.0-0_1.04_armel.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I can try to apt-get -f install (with no package name), but I'm hesitant to do this (seems unsafe) without advice from some more knowledgeable apt/debian folks.  The Apt How-to on Debian's site doesn't really address using -f well to relieve my anxiety about running it without indicating a specific package.  I've run apt-get -f install libts-0.0-0, but get the same error that I do when I run without the -f flag.

Problem #2: 5 packages that seem to be unable to upgrade without removing some packages I don't think I want removed
There are a number of packages that have available upgrades (e.g., claws-mail, libpng12-0, & pciutils), that don't want to upgrade without removing the following packages: libdirectftb-1.0-0 [interesting given connection to problem #1], libsdl1.2debian, libsdl1.2debian-alsa
links2, & mplayer.  I haven't followed the chain of interlocking dependencies to see why this is, but it seems odd that these packages need removed rather than possibly upgraded themselves.  Anybody run into something like this?  Any advice?

Thanks in advance.

In watching my system boot, I noticed the following line & wondered if it was something to be concerned about:

Mount failed or selinuxfs on /seliunx: no such file of directory

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Hentges Rom: New Versioning System
« on: October 26, 2006, 08:28:35 pm »

Hello all,

as of today, Hentges ROMs will use a different versioning system which is independent from OpenZaurus releases / versions, please read Versioning.txt for details.

You can find snapshots for Akita and Spitz here: http://hentges.net/tmp/snapshots/Hentges-ROM/1.0.0/20061023/

Known Problems so far:

- The hostap_cs WIFI driver does not survive a suspend / resume cycle
- cat some_soundfile.raw > /dev/dsp does no longer work ( mplayer & friends still produce sound )
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=144574\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I just installed the image on my terrier, and am tinkering.  I found what I think are too small errors in the package manager feeds list for the spitz roms.  All the feeds list 3.5.4.1 except the ./feed/upgrades/machine/spitz & ./feed/machine/spitz.  When I browsed the feeds, there appears not to be  spitz directories on machine under 3.5.4.2, just 3.5.4.1.  So when you run ipkg update, you get a 401 error on these two feeds, and then a follow on error  because of this.

I changed the 3.5.4.2 to 3.5.4.1 in the ipkg.conf & no more errors on those two feeds.

Now there is just an error for the oz.henges.net/hentges-feeds/1.0.0/upgrades, but I expect that this will remain until that feed gets put up as there appears to be only 3.5.4.1 not 1.0.0 feeds in that directory.

Thanks for your continued great work- I've been excitedly waiting to try your rom on my terrier.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Hentges Rom For Spitz

Hey all,
some people have been asking for "Hentges" style Spitz images. Since Spitz is mostly identical to Akita I thought I'd give it a try.

http://hentges.net/tmp/do_not_use/spitz/

Hi CoreDump,

When I click the link to get the spitz image, I get a 404 error.  In looking through this thread, I didn't see any announcement that the image was being pulled.  Is this a web site accident (he says hoping), a temporary move, or something longer term?

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Screen Protectors?

Streamline is the one I got with my C1000.  I got it on well, but there was a big spec of something under it, very annoying,  Took off, and reapplied, even worse.. I even cleaned it.  But, still horrible.   I made sure to clean the screen well with cloth etc, but stuff just gets attracted to it.

I may try the Axim type.  If one doesn't work, I don't want to spend alot on just one screen protector.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=143194\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I've found it best to apply screen protectors in the bathroom after getting it nice and steamy to prevent dust settling on the screen while applying the protector.  I also use a can of compressed air as a final step before applying the protector, as even good lint-free cloth can get dust or fibers on it that it then leaves on the screen.  I've also found that while most screen protector manufacturers say that you can remove, clean, and re-apply the protectors, I just haven't found one that I was happy with after doing this.  I've tried a lot of brands on my palms, and just came to the conclusion that I buy 2 at a time, in case I screw up with the first one, and then I just replace with a new one when the time comes.

I'm using the Boxwave ClearTouch, which is the same brand I used on my Palm Tungsten C & liked.  I'm not as happy with it for the Z, as it is just a bit too short in the widest dimension, and imparts a slight waviness.  I'm using the anti-glare version, so the non-anti-glare version (CrystalClear?) might be better.  I do like the stylus feel with the Boxwaves.

Off Topic forum / Looking For Linux-compatible Mp3 Player
« on: October 14, 2006, 12:09:01 pm »
Also consider the iAudio X5L.  Great audio, supports ogg & flac in addition to the usual mp3 etc., has phenomenal battery life (drove from Iowa to W. Pennsylvania and back [@14 hrs. ea. way] and still had 1/4 battery left), an FM radio, and works great with a linux system.  I haven't tried the video, as I use my Z with its better screen.  Having had an iPod, the sound reproduction is noticeably better on the iAudio.

I just downloaded the new version, and it was bad according to Acrobat.
Dated: 08-Sep-2006 00:49  5.7M

Is the version on the mirror site the latest version?
I already have a version from 28-jul-2006
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=140967\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I don't see anything in the document itself to indicate date,  but the file has a 09/08/06 creation date so it looks like it is the new version.

Linux Issues / Hacking Of Linksys Routers And Gateways

If you are looking to buy a Linksys router, be aware that only the WRTG54L still uses the open firmware based on Linux and can be flashed with an Linux-based alternative.

Software / General Questions

seul.org has proved a great resource and i have already bookmarked quite a few apps that i could possibly use if i get a zaurus. Just one other thing i noticed from your signature was that you are getting the 3200, did you get it? Is that screen really a pleasure to use?

Thanks again
Gus

I'm still waiting impatiently.  I have used a friend's 3100 (until he told me that he didn't mean for me to play with it for hours  ), and the screen (which is identical to the 3200) lives up to the hype.

Software / General Questions

Does anyone know if there is a software app for aiding study, like a flash card system, or a quiz where a quiz file can be imported and your knowledge tested.

There are a couple flash card programs.  MyFlashCards works in OPIE.  Z Flash is another.  There are several for learning Japanese, but I'm not sure if any can be used for other purposes.  I'm not sure about a quiz program that allows you to import quiz files.  A lot of the quiz programs I've seen on Windows & Macs are proprietary commercial products  I'm not familiar with what is available in Linux, but there are some education-oriented sites for Linux users that might have some programs of interest that can be compiled for the Z (see my response to your next question).  You might want to look at seul.org.

Is it generally possible for apps for Linux desktops to be re-compiled for the zaurus, I'm thinking the only spanner in the works would be the the VGA screen. Am i right in thinking that if it works in VGA on the desktop it will work on the Zaurus.
Yes, many Linux desktop apps can run on the Zaurus if you use one of the X Window based distros/ROMs such as OZ+GPE or PDAXROM, X/QT on the Sharp ROM or Cacko.  I'm not sure if every VGA app in a Linux desktop system can be made to work on the Zaurus as it may depend on what other libraries and apps a program depends on.  So, some VGA apps may not work.  There are quite a few apps from the Linux desktop already compiled to run on the Z if you use one of the above distros/ROMs, so you may not even need to do more than install the package from the relevant feeds.

The Zaurus screen from what i read is respected as probably the best of all pdas, does anyone therefore use it for developement work when on the road?
Many do.  There are a bunch of text editors, but also some IDEs that can be used to program.  You should check out this site's the "Everything Development" forum and its numerous subfora for more details.

OESF Announcements / 10,000 Members Strong!
« on: August 28, 2006, 09:09:16 pm »
As one of the new post-10,000 members (wow, have their really been almost 1,000 new members register in the 3 days following the 10Kth?- see my member # and reg. date), I thought I'd make my first post one of congratulations and thanks.  The forums have built up a great deal of very helpful info., helped convince me that the Zaurus was an alive and vibrant alternative worth serious consideration (I just bought a 3200   ), and helped me sort through the many alternatives in selecting a model, wifi card, case, and which ROMs would make the finalist round.  It has also been a great way to kill many hours.

Here's to many more 10,000 user announcements!
