<...snip...>

- cat filename | more (list the contents of a file)

<...snip...>

extra typing for nothing, you can just use your favorite pager direct on a file.

- more filename
or
- less filename

that being said, I find less to be more...

I think this question is much like asking weather VI or Emacs is better...

Neither... pico is the only way to go!

Well I guess that just proves my point   Bottom line, there is no \'right\' distribution.  Keep trying them until you find one that feels like home.

BTW: I used to use pico ages ago, but stopped when it \'broke\' a long line in a firewall rule set I was writing.  I promptly learned vi.

I think this question is much like asking weather VI or Emacs is better.

That being said, I use debian and am very happy with it.  As stated above, once set up, upgrades are nearly painless.

I second the give suse a try, I tested that on my laptop once and it found everything but my sound card, which only works with commercial drivers anyhow.

Also, the suggestion of running it on a 2nd box is good, easy to experiment and not have to worry about breaking anything.

*.tar.bz2 get renamed to *.tar on my WinXP box.

You got anything that will open bz2 file under windows?

Stu

yes, see my post above.  7-zip will open that as well as rpm and deb files.   you can also install cygwin and have decent posix environment  and get tar gzip and bzip.

Software / driftnet

Same with my network at work, I\'ll have to plug my laptop in near the router and see if that makes a difference.  On second thought, <EvilGrin>, I\'ll plug the router into a hub.

Looks interesting.  With WinXP it is most likely running one of the x86 chips.  Perhaps a Transmeta chip.

General Discussion / Do I need a wireless access point?
« on: February 16, 2004, 11:54:31 am »
Guess this cold got in the way of my thought process, I meant that ad hoc mode works well enoug to connect the Z to the workstation.  If part of the goal is to get online with the Z, it\'s much better(easier) to just use a router.

General Discussion / Linux Desktop

I\'m in the several boxes camp as well.  Bit of a hardware junkie.

main desktop: athlon xp 1700 oc\'s to 1900, 384M ram, Geforce2ti, dual boot win2k/debian(unstable)
secondary desktop: athlon tbird 1200, 192M ram, Geforce2mx, dual boot winXP/fedora
portable: celeron 400, 192M ram, neomagic video/sound, dual boot, win2k/debian(unstable)
server: amd k6-2/400, 256M ram, debian woody

assorted HD\'s ranging from 8G to 120G.  in need of a dvd burner.

The only place I sync is to my work machine with outlook 2000, it\'s where the cradle lives.

I\'ll probably pick up an old mac at some point to mess with os X.

So, where are we going with all this? What\'s in Joshp\'s box?

Is there any reason why you would not want to get an AP?  If you already have a network routed to the internet through a gateway, an AP is a very handy way to connect the Z to the internet.

To do what you want though, yes, a wusb11 would work.  I\'ve connected my Z to my laptop in adhoc mode, using the ip\'s the cradle would give, to sync.  works great.

By default, ext2 filesystems use 5% overhead for the superuser.  This option can be changed, not sure what the implications are though.
