Help with SL5500 back to the 2.38 ROM
« on: February 17, 2004, 10:04:06 pm »
I picked up a SL-5500 off ebay to play with during the cold weather.  My first mistake was buying a TRENDnet TEW-2222CF without researching it first. I plashed up to the version 3 ROM in a vain attempt to get it to work.

Well anyway a good wi-fi and a 64M CF card should arrive soon.  How do I get it plashed back to the 2.38 ROM?  The myzaurus.com site says to copy the ROM onto my new CF card then hold down the [C], [D], and push reset.  What is the [C] and [D] keys?  I hope it is not the tiny c and d keys on the hidden keyboard because I don\'t think my clumsy fingers can get those and only those keys down at the same time!

I want to go back to the 2.38 ROM so I can use the linux sync software, I try to use Windows as little as I can.

Thanks all, I like the info I have found on your web site.

Rather than going back to 2.38, you might look at going to OZ. OZ uses the same PIM backend storage format as the old 2.38 ROMs so your syncing problem will be (as) solved (as it will be with the old Sharp ROM). Plus OZ is a far more modern than 2.38.

If you know anything about Linux (or are willing to learn and hack a little) then I\'d go for the latest 3.3.6pre1 version. If you aren\'t of that persuasion then go for 3.2 (stable).

I was able to plash back to the old ROM tonight when the UPS delivered the CF card.  I want to play around with this ROM for a while.

I looked at the web site at: http://www.openzaurus.org

It looks good and I have been running Debian Sid on my old notebook to learn how linux can differ from the SuSE install on my desktop.  OZ as a Debian feel to it.  The only drawback I see right now is locating an Opera ipk or some other web browser.

Are their any other apps that are not available on OZ?  Can you use the Hancom ipk from the Sharp 3.2 update in OZ? Is it possible to package some of the apps in the Sharp ROM for use under OZ?

You need to use the Hancom apps and Jeode from the 2.xx ROM. In fact while you\'re running that ROM you may as well run the ipkg-creator scripts (look on killefiz.de/zaurus) to create the ipks for when you flash over :-)

Opera can be found in one of the add-on app packs for the later 3.xx based ROMs (e.g. TheKompany - see ZUG downloads) and it works fine, or you can download v7 from IBM (thread about this in general chat).
