Nice! I'd compile it myself, but I don't have t3h skillz yet...

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Web Browser Suggestions

yeah. I run a freenx server on my server at home ( a low watt 800mhz c3/ Debian Sarge) I can get a gui and use it over nx for pretty much the same amount of data as web surfing, though obviously the two look a bit different on iptraf.

AFAIK we have not got a zaurus pdaxrom client.  Last I checked the only client around was for Old OZ (like 3.3.6) on a 5500.
there were some attempts that didn't really get much interest of follow-through over the past year or so. I guess either it was too difficult of people didn't see the point.

If you haven't played with it, give it a whirl on the desktop and monitor your traffic. I did and I was impressed.

This is a whole lot friendlier to cafe/work/other peoples connections than either vnc or a really compressed  X over SSH. Not as tiny as text mode, of course. It would be a really welcome option on the Z, I think
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I second that. I have a NX server at home too (the latest NX server, not the freenx release), and a NXclient Java applet embedded in a web page, so all I need to do is visit that page from any computer and I'm home. It works really well, better than tightVNC.
A NX client would be a good way to have access to a fast, full-fledged web browser from the Z, plus it would allow to do a lot more than the Z on its own (e.g. handle really big files with the Gimp, manage your P2P, etc).
Anyway, the source is available at [a href=\"http://www.nomachine.com/developers.php]http://www.nomachine.com/developers.php[/url]
There is a Qt package too, but it's for Zaurus 5xxx.

The problem it seems is that if I click key 125 (home) it acts as ctrl and locks on until you click
key 121 or 122 to remove the lock.
Could it be in any way related to this nasty problem?

I have the same issue. I've been tinkering a bit and I think it has something to do with Fluxbox too.

When I tap any of the silkscreen icons, the keyboard stops responding. It just locks - xev doesn't report keypresses, not even xvkbd works. For some reason the bottom row of app buttons and the Menu button still work, though.

Let's say I have this on ~/.fluxbox/keys:
Code: [Select]
None XF86Launch0    : exec aterm
None XF86Launch1    : exec aterm
None XF86Launch2    : exec aterm
None XF86Launch3    : exec aterm
None XF86Launch4    : exec aterm
I have aterm assigned to all silkscreen keys. When I tap e.g. the Calendar icon, aterm opens, but I can't type anything because the keyboard has been locked. Tapping any other icon opens the assigned program, but the keyboard stays locked. Only exiting X or restarting Fluxbox brings the keyboard back.

Now remove one of those lines from ~/.fluxbox/keys, e.g. the one for the Mail silkscreen button:
Code: [Select]
None XF86Launch3    : exec atermLaunch Fluxbox again. Nothing happens when tapping the Mail icon (as expected) but this time the keyboard doesn't lock. Note that the rest of the icons still open aterm and lock the keyboard, but only until you tap the Mail icon: it does nothing (because it has no action assigned) but the keyboard will unlock.

So this is the workaround I'm using: I chose the Calendar icon to unlock the keyboard, so I left the line regarding XF86Launch1 out of my ~/.fluxbox/keys file. After tapping any other icon I have to tap the Calendar one to be able to use the keyboard.
No big deal for me because all I wanted was a way to swap mouse buttons and open the Fluxbox rootmenu in PDA mode, but IMHO this issue needs a fix.

Wow, that was fast! Thanks a lot!
It really is quicker to load.

Same here. Can't change keycodes in xmodmap file because tapping the silkscreen icons doesn't trigger a keypress (xev doesn't report any event).

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Fluxbox: The Ultimate Configuration
« on: December 06, 2006, 08:10:47 am »
Fluxbox has always been my wm of choice, it's nice to have it on the Zaurus too. Thanks for the howto  I had the "blocks between each letter" problem which was solved by turning on antialiasing.

But I've noticed it takes a loooong time (20-30 secs) to load. Being such a light wm, this shouldn't happen, but I had that same issue on a few desktops and a laptop.

The output of
Code: [Select]
# fluxbox -info in console confirms the package was compiled with XMB enabled. I believe the boot-up time could be reduced quite a lot by compiling it with
Code: [Select]
--disable-xmbThis worked for the desktops and the laptop I had. Maybe it could solve the problems with the fonts too.

However, I don't feel comfortable enough with pdaXrom on my Z to try any compiling yet. Could any of you test this?

I don't mean to butt in as I don't use pdaXrom, but why couldn't Opera for linux run on pdaXrom?

That page redirects you to main page, try this one.
http://www.opera.com/download/index.dml?custom=yes
I plan on getting a second Zaurus next year and flashing pdaXrom onto it, but would like to see Opera and Picsel Browser run on it.

I don't think there are Opera builds for ARM processors...

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Browsers In Pdaxrom
« on: December 05, 2006, 10:21:17 am »
Just tried Konqueror. It needed the libstdcxx5-compat package (I found it in Meanie's feed).
Opens quite fast and looks good... but https is not supported. Also, it complains about scripts taking too long, and reloads the pages unexpectedly while I am trying to read them. Maybe I'm asking too much, but for me it's not usable enough.

At least it hasn't crashed yet...

I tried commenting out all debug-related lines and functions on run-mozilla.sh, and disabling memory and disk cache completely in about:config (just in case), but it crashes anyway with the same error...

Meanie, do you have ipk's?

C1000/3x00 Hardware / C1000 Can Write To Sd Card... Why?
« on: December 05, 2006, 05:44:49 am »
I see... So basically Zaurii have a MMC slot, only it's thick enough to fit SD cards.
Still, there should be a warning about that somewhere in the documentation... maybe it is, but I can't read japanese

Thanks for your replies, everyone.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Browsers In Pdaxrom

Dillo just doesn't do the job for me (no CSS, weird rendering, sometimes it's impossible to find something within a page because it's not  where you'd expect).
I bought the C1000 mainly because it supported wi-fi and could run Firefox, so I'd be able to browse the net on the go without lugging a laptop (basically I wanted a micro-laptop, that's why I chose pdaXrom). But I'm sad to find out it's not ready for that

I've been trying Firefox, but it crashes randomly. It segfaults with
Code: [Select]
/usr/lib/firefox/lib/firefox-1.57run-mozilla.sh: line 131: XXXXX Segmentation fault "$prog" ${1+"$@"}(The XXXXX is a different number each time. Sometimes it says "Terminated" instead of "Segmentation fault").
I can't install xpi extensions either (goodbye to NoScript and Adblock+).

I don't care how slow it is, I can live with that, even with no extensions, but I need a browser that shows the pages as they are and doesn't crash. Besides, there's no Flash plugin support. I know Macromedia won't release Flash Player 9 for Linux, but at least Flash 8 should be supported...
Java? I haven't even dared to try that yet.

I had a Palm T|T which never let me down. It's been 5 years since I bought it, and still working flawlessly, but there were no usable browsers for it and no wi-fi, so I gave it away to a relative.
Now I'm seriously thinking of selling my C1000 unless I find a browser that does the job

What about Konqueror? Is it stable? How much space does it take, including libraries?

General Discussion / Sd Mounting Problem
« on: December 04, 2006, 12:03:48 pm »
Actually it's easy to "counterfeit" those Sandisk cards. All of them look exactly the same on the outside: a small blue slate of plastic with golden contacts. The only way to tell them apart is the label... so people with questionable ethics can swap the labels with old cards that no one wants (16M, 32M) or even make new fake labels.

Anyway, later models have the size etched on the plastic instead of a label, and sometimes they have it etched on the back of the card too. That helps.

C1000/3x00 Hardware / C1000 Can Write To Sd Card... Why?
« on: December 04, 2006, 11:28:18 am »
A few minutes ago I was formatting some SD cards with my Akita (running pdaXrom 1.1.0beta3).

I was on a root console, no X running. Formatted a Dane-Elec 1GB SD card just fine. I took it out from the Zaurus, put it in the card reader of my desktop computer, and as soon as I tried to write on it, the computer complained that the card was write-protected.

I unmounted it, took it out and checked the switch. It really was in the "Lock" position   But I just formatted it with the Zaurus mere seconds before, and it didn't complain then...

So I decided to give it a try. I made sure the card was write-protected, put it in the Zaurus and ran this:
Code: [Select]
#touch /mnt/card/test
#
No errors came out.

I took the card again to my computer, without touching the switch, and sure enough, there was the "test" file. When I try to delete it with the computer, it complains again (as it should) that the card is write-protected.

Does the Zaurus just ignore the write-protection switch on SD cards? It's dangerous!

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Downgrade R121 To Beta3

Thanks a lot adf, Loji's site was of great help. I have now Beta3 installed, up and running

However, I still can't access neither www.pdaxrom org nor mail.pdaxrom.org. I had a copy of the beta3 install package by sheer luck, I downloaded it a couple of days ago, but today I can't install anything from the official or contrib feeds.

Is there a mirror of the main feed for beta3? Do you recommend another feed?

Thanks!
