Porque instalarle un ubuntu en el c3000 es una barbaridad?? habría problemas de velocidad, o hay algo más que no se?

No una barbaridad sino una imposibilidad. Primero porque Ubuntu está compilada para CPU x86, mientras que el Zaurus tiene un procesador ARM (nada que ver). Segundo, porque la arquitectura de hardware a nivel dispositivos y demás es completamente distinta (drivers propios del Zaurus). Y tercero porque el boot se hace en forma distinta, no te vale un LILO o GRUB sino que hay que hackearse el ROM de boot de cada modelo de Zaurus para portar una distribución. Así que tienes que usar no sólamente las distribuciones propias para Zaurus, sino para el modelo específico que tengas.

Buenas. Llevo muchas semanas (algunos meses) dándole vueltas a la compra de un pda. Primero pedí que fuera VGA, luego que valiera para programar ... al final la opción zaurus es la única que me parece lógica. Los otros pda parecen agendas tontas a su lado (o ésta es la percepción que tengo ahora).

Tienes toda la razón. Yo antes estaba en el mundo Palm y ahora tengo una C760. Ni punto de comparación.

- No se si escoger el c3000 o el c860. El primero tiene un puerto usb que supongo que me serviría para conectar un teclado usb, no? aparte está el disco duro, pero entonces la memoria ROM para que está? No se si vale la pena el gastar 200€ más por majoras que apenas notaré. Qué puedo hacer con el c3000 que no pueda hacer con el c860 + CF 1Gb?

Existen dos tipos de puertos USB: Host y Device. USB Host es el que tiene un ordenador normal (al que le puedes conectar dispositivos). USB device es el que tiene cualquier dispositivo USB (que lo puedes conectar solamente a un ordenador). El C760/860 (es el mismo hardware) tiene USB device, creo que el C3000 tiene USB host (así que le puedes conectar teclados, discos duros, etc.). Algo que tienes que tener en cuenta es que la mayoría de los dispositivos USB cogen la corriente del puerto USB (es decir, de la batería del Zaurus, en este caso). Para dispositivos como teclados, que no utilizan casi corriente, no hay problema. Para dispositivos como discos duros, o te coges uno que tenga la posibilidad de alimentación externa, o usas un hub USB que tenga alimentación.

El almacenamiento ayuda bastante. Yo en mi C760 tengo una tarjeta SD de 512Mb que uso principalmente para ebooks y música, y a veces me queda corta (por la música). Por otra parte, para el C760 hay varias distribuciones que puedes instalar para reemplazar la de Sharp, mientras que para el C3000 creo que no hay tantas. Yo uso una que se llama Cacko que mola muchísimo. Toma en cuenta que es mejor usar tarjetas SD que CF para almacenamiento, así dejas la ranura CF libre para una tarjeta WiFi o Bluetooth o lo que sea.

Ahora que por €200 de diferencia, igual no compensa el C3000.

- Y después está en dónde comprarlo. Las tiendas más baratas, y mejor diseñadas (una web bien diseñada me da confianza) son geekstuff4u.com y dynamism.com, a 800€ largos la c3000. shirtpocket.co.uk se va para los 1000€, etc etc
Se que hay el tema de las aduanas y los aranceles. Por lo que he leido si hay suerte sólo te cobrarán el iva y un pequeño plus, y sino ... pues no lo se, no he leido ninguna experiencia negativa al respecto, alguien tiene alguna???

Yo compré con shirtpocket, además de los aranceles y aduanas, ellos se encargan de la garantía. Si tienes un problema con un Zaurus, no basta con enviarlo a Sharp en Japón, tienes que tener una dirección física en Japón para que te lo devuelvan (cosas de Sharp). Los distribuidores como ShirtPocket y trisoft.de se encargan de todo esto. Claro que en el año y medio que llevo con mi C760 no he tenido ningún problema, pero uno nunca sabe.

- Y finalmente, no se si esperar puesto que sospecho que dentro de poco sacarán algun modelo nuevo, con el consequente ajuste de precios.

Hay rumores de un C3100 pero no se sabe qué tendrá o qué no tendrá. Viendo el historial de Sharp (por ejemplo, C760/C860, C5000/C5500, etc) la mayoría de la gente no cree que haya mucha diferencia salvo un disco duro algo más grande y alguna aplicación adicional (ha habido algo de ruido en algunos de los foros en inglés de este mismo sitio). Yo te diría que, si estás decidido, lo pidas ya.

Yes, but it has been merged with the battery applet - click on the battery applet and you'll see the slider to adjust brighness.

Thanks, that is  coolness!   I was running out of space on the applet/task bar when in portrait mode! Nice touch, merging the applets.

Sharp ROMs / Cacko Rom 1.22 Lite Is Available!

In 1.21 there was an applet to control the screen brightness without having to use the Power&Light settings panel and without using the keyboard (for when you are in portrait mode). I can't seem to find it either in the feed or in the base ROM itself. Is it still available?

Por lo que he visto nadie ha nombrado una tienda on-line donde conseguir Zaurus.

Pues no sé en qué hilo fue pero yo ya había mencionado http://www.shirtpocket.co.uk. Te la traen, se encargan de los portes e incluso si tienes algún problema mientras el cacharro esté en garantía, se las envías a ellos y ellos se encargan de enviarla a Japón (si la compras directamente a Japón puedes llegar a tener algún problema con eso). Muy buen servicio, yo les compré una C760 hace como año y medio.

Intenta ponerlo como evento de tipo "Allday", así en la vista semanal aparece arriba entre las citas normales y las cabeceras de las columnas. Puedes además ponerle una categoría y en alguna de las pantallas de preferencias asignarles color a las categorías. Le va a cambiar el color solamente a la "cita" que crees, pero si la pones como Allday se ve siempre. En cuanto a la recurrencia, cada cita la puedes poner con 2 días de duración y recurrencia cada 10 días y CREO que te puede dar lo que quieres. Y bienvenido al club!

Spain / Como Cargar Una Zaurus C860

Yo tengo una C760. Aunque la compré a través de ShirtPocket en UK, que te envían un cargador de 220v, me gusta siempre tener un extra así que compré uno en El Corte Inglés, en el departamento de audio. Características importantes:

1. Que tenga la entrada correcta (compárala con el que te viene con la C860). No todos los adaptadores tienen esa entrada.

2. El voltaje son 5v, necesitas al menos 1 amperio aunque si te compras uno de 2 tardará algo menos en cargar. No todos los adaptadores tienen 5v, la mayoría tienen 4.5 y 6. Con 4.5 no se carga bien la batería, con 6 te puedes cargar el circuito. Búscate uno que tenga 5. El que tengo yo es multivoltaje (tiene un conmutador deslizable que le cambias el voltaje).

3. Que sea regulado. Los adaptadores sin regular son más baratos pero te arriesgas a cargarte la Zaurus si hay un pico de voltaje.

Sharp ROMs / SD card weirdness on Cacko 1.21b

I'm running Cacko 1.21b on an SL-C760. I have 2 SD cards, my old 256MB and a just-purchased 512MB, both formatted with VFAT. Using an SD card reader I copied over all of the data from the old card to my laptop's hard drive (using tar) and then unpacked it to the new card.

In the new card I'm missing a lot of files that seem to be taking up space in the card. Doing a df -k gives me 233,584 K used in the card; however, doing a du -sk on the card's root I get 152 K. The old card gives me similar results in both cases (231,496 K with df, 231,480 with df).

I already tried reformatting the card and copying the data again, and get the same results. I also tried formatting the card as ext2 but my PowerBook doesn't seem to recognize it (even though I've installed the ext2fs for OS X package).

Never mind, I just tried doing du -sk on the laptop and got a bunch of files containing gibberish, I might be stuck with a busted SD card.  I guess this topic will stay here since I haven't found a way of deleting a topic, only of editing it.

Has anybody heard of an SD card brand called "extrememory"?

Buenas,

Me presento como un nuevo usuario de Zaurus (C700 concretamente), despues de haber probado todo PDA habido y por haber.

Aún estoy resacoso después de empollar y asimilar toda la información sobre las distintas ROMs existentes, y tratando de que Intellisync sea capaz de encontrar los datos de Palm Desktop.

Vengo de un T3, que conservaré por un sencillo motivo: por el momento, el software PIM existente no se puede ni comparar a lo que hacen programas como Agendus o DateBK5 (espero que sea sólo por el momento... estoy "presionando"    al programador de DateBK5 para que lo porte a Linux je je je), y no hay software de navegación GPS.

El resto, y aún con el poco tiempo que llevo jugando con él....¡magnífico! Es impresionante.

Espero que esto se anime...tiene que haber más usuarios de Zaurii en España y demás países de habla española, ¿no?

I found the problem that causes KaPi most likely to crash. The reason is that during
import/sync of external data (like from SharpDTM),
KA/Pi transfers/translates certain characters not correctly.
Please open your addressbook file with an ascii editor and search for the character combination
^M\n

whereas ^M is one carriagereturn (0x0d) character and \n are two ascii characters.
Mostlikely this happens in the NOTES or the ADR entry.
If you remove the ^M character from the spots, you should be able to load the file again.

We are still trying to figure out if this is a problem with the source data when syncing the data into Ka/Pi the first time. (Question: How did you get the data into Ka/Pi when you saw this error. Syncing from DTM?)

Ulf, That did it!

It's a bit hard to get a ^M into most editors since they confuse it with the Enter key, so just for the record, this is what I did in the command line:

$ cd kdepim/apps/kabc
$ mv std.vcf std.vcf.old
$ tr -d '\r' < std.vcf.old > std.vcf

'tr' is a standard Unix tool that translates a character into another, with the -d option it deletes all occurrences of the given character. \r is the way to tell it to use ^M as a character.

And yes, I did get the data originally with DTM sync and I have my original DTM file, if you need me to do some testing.

It's me again with another (real) problem. I imported all my data from DTM to KA/PI, did some edits and exited. KA/PI. I then tried starting KA/PI again and it didn't start. Starting from the command line gives:

OK, so now that I have KA/Pi working, I've found a couple bugs/RFE's. First of all, there is a sorting problem with accented charactes that are used in spanish, french, german and other languages. All accented letters should be sorted as if they were the unaccented letter (so á, â, ä, and so on should be sorted the same as "a", ñ the same as n, and so on). Not necessarily a major problem except if a person's first or last name starts with an accented letter, they get sorted at the end of the list.

It would be nice to have an option where, if there is no first/last name, the company/organization name gets displayed/sorted instead. This would be optional.

Aside from that, from a first look, this looks like a wonderful suite! Congrats to Zautrix, Ulf and the rest of the people involved!

Software / KDE-Pim/Pi 1.9.6 Release

I held off from moving from KO/Pi 1.9.3 until the KA/Pi address sync worked. Now I tried 1.9.5b and 1.9.6 (always deleting the previous versions first) and have been unable to get the sync to work. I did a search in ZUG but haven't seen any solutions. I'm running the latest Cacko (1.22, I believe).

The Qtopia sync doesn't work at all. Selecting File/Import/Import Qtopia I get nothing. If I launch kapi from the terminal I get the following:

A bit more info. From this post I got the link http://www.pi-sync.net/daunlood/libqpepim.so.1 that Zautrix gave to somebody else. I got the libqpepim.so.1 from there. Then I removed everything, made sure that libmicrokabc_qtopia.so.* wasn't there any more, and reinstalled all the KDE-Pim/PI packages (as per this thread). I made sure that both .so's were where they should be. I then tried starting kapi again from the command line and doing the import. Still the same problem. In my previous post I forgot to mention that I'm trying to import the DTM addressbook, not the other Qtopia addressbook. Am I missing something?

OK, so that was probably stupid of me....thinking this was "importing" and not "synchronizing". While exploring a bit more I found the "Synchronize -> Sharp DTM" menu option. That did the trick! Sorry for the confusion.
