Zaurus - pdaXrom / Ide-cs Module. Avaiable?
« on: September 06, 2005, 08:34:24 pm »
Check the other thread. Basically, try the drive in other devices. Not being able to spin means big problems. Call and get an RMA. They'll ship you one back.
I got my first one from Fry's and the replacement direct from Singapore (still had the new drive smell). It works great now.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Hitachi Microdrive And Sl-6000
« on: September 06, 2005, 08:32:20 pm »
If you can, try the drive in other devices, like pcmcia adapter on a laptop or something, maybe in a digital camera. If it doesn't spin, there's something seriously wrong with the drive. Give those guys a call. I had one of these drives last November that worked for over a week while storing some Oggs for a road trip. It worked ok, but stopped working as soon as I got back. It was hosed. I called up Hitachi and they RMA'd it for me. The one I got back from them works like a champ. There is something like 2 year warranty on these things, so don't toss it out. The only thing I had trouble with was cutting up foam for an "approved shipping container". Weird.

I hate replying to my own post but I found the other posts regarding this kind of problem with certain Hitachi microdrives.  We can add 47C to the list of incompatible drives.  It was too cheap to be true!  $114 + Shipping and it will only work in certain MP3 players (according to the website where I bought it).

I wonder if there is a way to update the firmware available from Hitachi?

Anyone want to try and persuade Hitachi for this?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Sl-6000 Cannot Charge And Sync Using The Craddle
« on: July 11, 2005, 06:49:29 pm »
I find that the charging light does not go on until the unit is suspended. This doesn't mean that it isn't charging, it just means that the indication is not being given. Notice that when you do suspend, the charge light does not go out even if the unit has completed charging.

Does the battery applet indicate that it is using AC power?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Recovering From Pdaxrom Shutdown -h
« on: June 22, 2005, 08:48:08 pm »
So you know, this is with an SL-6000 running pdaXrom rc10 (Kathrin)

I learned the hard way that running "shutdown -h now" on a 6000 might not be a good move at this stage in the game. I couldn't get the Z to start up again. No orange light would come on when I plugged it in either. I did the following to get it to work:

1. Unplug the Zaurus.
2. Take the big battery out of the back.
3. Keep the backup battery switch on.
4. Short the terminals that were connecting to the battery with a penny.
5. Poke the Z with a couple of reset button bushings.
6. Pack battery back in and secure it with the two switches.
7. Plug it back in. If the orange light comes on, you're golden.

6000 - Tosa / USB Adaptor & Cables
« on: January 26, 2005, 01:24:38 pm »
If you don't see usbkbd.o after you open a terminal and type lsmod then you may need to do the following:
(I'm assuming that you're using the default Sharp Rom)
bash-2.05% su -
# modprobe usbkbd

And that's it. My logitech wireless keyboard seems to work great. As far as the mouse is concerned... I'm not really sure about that one. I haven't found any clear way to get the mouse to work yet.

6000 - Tosa / USB Adaptor & Cables

The port on the bottom is for USB host mode only.  As far as I know, USB networking is available through the cradle only. I just bridged my ethernet card and SL6000 together and made sure that the USB device was set up for DHCP.

I've just left the keyboard applet open. It serves me well on 6000 anyhow.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Need To Ipkg-link After Every Reboot
« on: December 21, 2004, 11:27:47 am »
That's the thing, it's just library symlinks. I'll search for the other fix for 3.5.1 and see if that applies. Thanks!

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Need To Ipkg-link After Every Reboot
« on: December 20, 2004, 07:59:19 pm »
Hello everyone!

I've a bizarre problem with my SL6000L running OZ 3.5.2 where all of the applications and libraries I have installed on my CF are unlinked after every reboot. After I reboot, I've got to go through and run ipkg-link mount /mnt/cf. Is there a process that detects these links and cleans them out if the targets are not found on reboot? Since I have a microdrive that everything is installed on, this might make a bit of sense... but who knows? Any ideas?

2) is correct. We've all tried to plug this cable into our 6000L's on the first go. There's a great link somewhere around here that has information on where to find a cable that does this. I bought the replacement cable from Iriver which works like a champ.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Reiserfs On 3.5.2
« on: December 11, 2004, 03:41:37 am »
Hello! I've got OZ 3.5.2 running on my SL6000L and have run into a bit of a problem with my 4 gig microdrive. Basically, installing apps to the cf is a little difficult since I can't do symlinks on fat32.
I decided Reiserfs would be good for me, so I grabbed the reiserfs packages and installed them to root. I formatted my cf as reiser, that's fine. When I try to mount the device, I realize that I'm missing something, as the busybox mount won't except  '-t reiserfs' as an argument.
What am I doing wrong? Am I missing libraries? I noticed that there's an e2fsprogs-libs* ipk, but nothing similar Reiser. Is this just a missing ipk?

I'm sticking with ext2 until I can get this figured out. Maybe the Wiki will have answers when it's fully back online. Anyways, good job OE guys. I'll be pestering you with development questions as soon as I get my cross-platform box up and running again.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Zaurus Died Flashing 3.5.2
« on: December 08, 2004, 10:55:18 pm »
Check your md5sums. They're there for a reason. I've seen the 5500/5000 and 6000L flavours both work on OPIE and GPE.
It works like this-
With your flash files and the corresponding md5sums.txt file in the same directory, do the following:
md5sum -b --check md5sums.txt

If you use Windows, try one of the following links, gratuitously ripped off from the Openoffice.org web site:

    *  http://etree.org/cgi-bin/counter.cgi/software/md5sum.exe
    * http://theopencd.sunsite.dk/md5sum.exe
    * http://www.people.virginia.edu/~dpc2a/cdr/md5sum.exe
    * http://openwebmail.lagmonster.org/download...5sum/md5sum.exe
    * http://www.2bright.net/download/md5sum.exe
    * http://www.fourmilab.ch/md5/md5.zip
    * http://downloads.activestate.com/contrib/m...dows/md5sum.exe
The Windows version will work the same, but you don't need to specify -b.

Ah, what the hey. It's 48 KB. I'll attach the Windows version here.

Just ripped straight from CDs or downloaded, then re-encoded to AAC (since the file format is better than MP3s)
FYI: Any transcoding to a lossy format will result in loss of data no matter how good your compression is. If you get a file in mp3, there's no way you can get it to sound better than that.  A crap sounding mp3 will not sound better transcoded to an AAC, AC3, or OGG (my personal preference).
Then again, if you're talking about extremely high bitrate MP3, the perceived quality loss may be acceptable. My personal tolerance is anything above 360 kbps VBR for MP3, and 0.6 quality for OGG.

General Discussion / BEST MICRODRIVE?
« on: November 22, 2004, 03:48:10 pm »
Power consumption for a Hitachi 4 gig is 305 mA at +3.3 V, while solid state cards are about a fifteenth of that.  Do these devices enter standby modes on their own, or do they just suck juice while they're mounted? I'm planning on a big trip soon, so I'm curious as to how long you can go between recharging the Z with the Hitachi Microdrive if you have the Z on constantly. I guess I could do the calculations myself, but I'm lazy and am happy with a subjective opinion.

Security and Networking / Routing question
« on: November 15, 2004, 07:17:03 pm »
What OS are you running under? I did this once under Windows 2000, but do it regularly under XP. I'd have to dig up the info for under Windows 2000, but in XP all you do is bridge your USB and network connections together and then run the dhcpcd client on your Z like so:
dhcpcd usbd0
That will request a dhcp addy from the same net as your ethernet or whatever. If you're only allowed one drop, you can use the seldom stable "internet connection sharing". I'll write more on this later, but I could swear I wrote about this setup last year. I'll try to find it.
