Any way to fix the mime type on this attachent so that it'll download properly in a browser?

Also, it gave me an "Extract of some of the files failed [...]" error.

Mac Issues / Tiger And The Z

This is mostly directed at dhns, I suppose, as he seems to be the one most actively developing a sync solution for the Z.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/zsrep/
The Zaurus Synchronization Repository is an active project with an OS X port.

Now that Apple has opened up the iSync API a bit in Tiger, is there any chance of seeing, say, my SL-6000 pop up in the iSync device menu? I really, really want to press one button and have my Z sync down to the last detail with iCal and Address Book (maybe Stickies too), bypassing Qtopia Desktop alotgether.
It seems like Apple should've made this possible, but my first pass at the developer's documentation left me looking for more, or at least an example.  Seems like they ought to have a nice wrapper for adding a new device to iSync along with docs on how to do this, but I didn't find it on a first pass.  I just haven't had a lot of time to look at the docs.

Of course, it would be really great to see the KDE/Pim suite supported directly -- perhaps even instead of Sharp's DTM, as you can actually work with the KDE/Pim developers, and most every Z user has by now switched to this much more full-featured PIM suite.
I haven't switched, and I really wouldn't have any interest in this.  To each their own though.

Whaddaya say? Is there any hope for this? Am I the only one who isn't happy with the existing options?

In an ideal world, we'd have one or even two really active open source projects going on for this, but reality is, that it's a couple developers with projects putting in whatever time they have.  I'd like to help out with the Zaurus Synchronization Repository project, but I just don't think I have any time for that at the moment.

Mac Issues / Zsrep On Sourceforge To Eventually Support Os X
« on: March 01, 2005, 12:46:12 pm »
Just saw this list message in the Zaurus Synchronization Repository project on sourceforge:
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message...msg_id=10896665

"Someone has offered to donate an OS X box to the project which will be great when we get it. This will allow us to support OS X and provide the project as a cross-platform solution. The goal will be to eventually make it cross-platform between Linux, Mac OS X, Cygwin, and eventually Windows."

It's open source, so, if you have the time and skills, help this guy out.

General Discussion / Any Chance For A New A Or B Series Model ?

What I am trying to say is, they need better PIM to attract Enterprise and way (or how about "some") marketing to get thier name out there in the business world.

[...]

Note: By weak software I am strictly talking ease of use by a business person who would come from a WINCE or PALM or Blackberry machine.
I think in the end, it was no longer PIM alone but enterprise integration in general.  There's no excuse in this day and age to not include an e-mail client that handles SSL.  It's a Linux PDA that doesn't really sync with Mac OS X or Linux.  Doesn't support a bunch of other security "standards" either, for example using LEAP or where I work Cisco VPN for wireless.

Having a mobile Linux device that you can't get onto a network is kind of pointless for enterprise use.

Mac Issues / Ann: Zmacsync-1.5 Available
« on: December 18, 2004, 12:02:29 pm »
I did a "delete all" within the different apps.  Let me guess, the sync software then assumed I wanted to delete everything on my Mac?  I guess that's the right behavior, but I think some kind of warning that everything was about to be deleted would've been appropriate.

I have to be honest, I really prefer the way the Zaurus Windows sync software works.  It prompts you with the numbers of additions/deletions/changes and gives you much finer grain control.

Let me try another sync and see if it gets me any closer to what I want.

[time passes]

I guess I should've read the manual and done a Bidirectional Copy, but that didn't seem to do it either.  Now I have everything I want on my Mac (everything that was on both devices), but for some reason the Zaurus now only has the addresses that were originally on my Mac and all the addresses that were originally on the Zaurus are gone.

It also stuck an extra card with "No Name" in one of my groups in the Mac Address Book.

I tried another sync to see if it'd pull everything together and it didn't do anything.

Then I tried another Bidirectional Copy, and now everything is on both devices plus a bunch of duplicates on both.  What was duplicated seems a little inconsistent (at least on the Mac).  Now everything that was on my Mac in the first place is on the Zaurus twice.

I don't know.  From here, I guess I'll clean up things on my Mac and reset my Zaurus.  That should get me to wherre I wanted to be.  My addresses needed a cleaning anyhow.

Well, at least I can now print my address labels from my Mac.

Well, I finally got around to trying the latest 1.5.1 version.  I started from scratch. I wanted to get addresses from my PC in Outlook to my Mac Address Book.  I started with an empty Zaurus, synced from my PC to my Zaurus, then from my Zaurus to my Mac.

All the addresses that were previously in the Mac Address Book are now gone.

Time to restore from the backup.

I think this software still needs a lot of work.

Thank you very much. I have subscribed to all calendars and will have a deeper look into the file structure later. Interestingly, iCal prints messages about an invalid character in these two calendards. So iCalendar standard seems to have different interpretations...
OK, well I'm responsible for the code that generates those two calendars.  What log, etc. are you looking at to see the invalid character messages?

Unfortunately, it created duplicates of all my addresses inside my Mac's Address Book.
For the duplicates we will have to look again into the unique-ID mechanism. It appears that firstly, your addressbook was copied to the Zaurus and then (because of lost references) added back.
Well this seems critical for syncing to work properly.  If there is any other info I can provide, let me know.

This is a message from the iCalendar parser. It means that it stumbles over unexpected tags. Did you import public calendars? If you have no concerns about the calendar file, please send as a private mail so that we can analyse what is going wrong.
I have a bunch of calendars that I am subscribed to.  What do you need sent to you?  Here are some of the calendars I subscribe to:

This seems to be the "bad boy"...

Someone else has also reported the same problems with the SLMEMO.BOX (http://www.dsitri.de/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=213#213). This is the DTM file for storing "Text Editor/Notes" or Stickies. It could be that Sharp 3.13 ROM does not create this file on a hard reset until you use "Text Editor/Notes". And dtm2xml tries to create a new one but this fails. We have tested mostly on a C860 with ROM 1.4JP and a SL5500G with ROM 3.10 which might be a little different to yours.

OK, I created a note in the Text Editor app and it now seems to sync without error messages.

Unfortunately, it created duplicates of all my addresses inside my Mac's Address Book.  The duplicates instead of saying "work" or "home" next to the e-mail address have a "1" instead and also seem to be missing icon and maybe other data.

It is also unclear to me why it's looking at calendar stuff if the only thing I have checked to update is "Address Book".

@Data from Zaurus-1 not available:

Hm. That can have many different reasons. Is the Zaurus crossed out (this is detected by a background ping task)?
I'm not sure what you mean by "crossed out", but I left a ping going from my Mac to my Zaurus while I was doing a fetch as well as had myself ssh'd into my Zaurus pinging back to my Mac while doing it.  The pings never seemed to slow up any, and the "Data from Zaurus-1 not available" messages kept appearing.  I was still able to ssh into my Zaurus after a couple of these messages appeared.  I quit out of ZMacSync before the ssh server on the Zaurus would likely lock up.

Probably worth noting that it takes almost 10 seconds from the time I start to ssh into my Zaurus from the command line till the time that I actually get a command prompt.

Doesn't seem to be working very well for me.  It keeps trying to do a "Fetch" from "Zaurus-1" and then displaying this "Data from Zaurus-1 not available" message at the bottom of the Zaurus Mac Sync window.  It did at some point sync my addresses from my Mac over to the Zaurus though.  Nothing goes to the Mac though, and the added, replaced, deleted, total on the Zaurus side stays at zero for everything.  Seems like it should've had "added" as the number of addresses that were copied over to the Zaurus.

Eventually the OpenSSH server on my Zaurus must stop working as ZMacSync will start popping up a dialog "Zaurus ssh: connect to host 192.168.129.201 port 22: Connection refused Check open-ssh installation." which I then have to click OK on a dozen times to close.  From then on, I can't ssh to my Zaurus from the command line.  I have to restart the Zaurus to get the SSH server back (yeah, I'm sure there's a way to do this from the command line too).

Anyhow, the messages aren't very useful to me, and it annoyingly keeps trying to connect to the Zaurus without any action on my part.

Does it matter if you use the "root" or "zaurus" accounts on the Zaurus to connect?

My setup: Mac OS 10.3.6, AJZaurusUSB 2.8, Zaurus SL-5500, Sharp 3.13 ROM.  I installed the OpenSSH and DTM2XML provided in your package.

If there is extra info I can provide to help debug it, let me know.

Software / Upgrading the Java Runtime Environment
« on: September 21, 2004, 03:46:21 pm »
The short answer of this is that you can't.

I have a SL-5500, so I'm not positive which Java VM comes with the SL-C760, but it is either the Jeode PersonalJava implementation or Sun's J2ME CDC Personal Profile implementation.  They are both lighter-weight Java implementations meant to mainly use on PDAs with AWT for interfaces.

There are some hacked versions of some earlier Swing classes that work to some extent with at least the Jeode PersonalJava VM.  So you could try that depending on your needs.  My understanding was that it's pretty slow.

I suspect you could build a full-blown J2SE VM for the Zaurus.  It would probably require X Windows at the present, plus loads of RAM space.

There are answers to various questions like this here:

General Discussion / Sharp Leaves Pda Market In USA

I've never seen the Sharp Zaurus advertised anywhere.  Most people don't know it exists.  It's not carried at CompUSA, Best Buy, OfficeMax, or Office Depot.
The SL-5500 was sold in at least Office Depot and Best Buy for probably a couple of years, I think also Circuit City and some other places as well.  It was in the weekly ads for some of these places on occasion as well.  My local Office Depot had some leftover Zaurus accessories up until a few months ago.

That said, the average person that shops those places is not going to buy a Zaurus.  Also, at that time, the software on the Zaurus was no where close to what it is today.
