For Sale / Wanted / For Sale C1000
« on: May 19, 2010, 08:07:17 pm »
Hi,

So I started my Zaurus up again.
Installed Debian, and waiting for a CF/PCMCIA adapter to upgrade my WCF12 card to support WPA.

Next is seeing if I can get it to work as a low power NAS device on my network.
Thinking of using a small external USB 2.5" HD with an enclosure.

Wireless B is not bad, and being wireless means its more portable.

That being said,

Anybody interested?

Debian / State Of The Kernel Feb 2010

Hi,

I just recently dusted of my C1000....yeah!

So, I need something fairly recent, but I'm not sure what...

I'm thinking of using my z as a wireless NAS attached to a USB key/hardrive.
Low power, and enough processing power.

Is there a link on how to install the current debian on my akita?

Thanks...and yes, there are a lot of lurkers out there like me :-)

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Outdated Angstom Wiki And Links
« on: May 15, 2010, 10:02:44 pm »
Hi,

Its been a looonnnngg time.

I figured I might as well hack my zaurus for the time being.
I'm thinking of making a wireless NAS out of it for light File sharing.

So, I have no idea now how to install Angstorm.
I looks like Angstrom is the most up to date distro...am I wrong?
I had zubuntu, but did a nand flash and now have the Sharp Rom installed.

Do I still need a update.sh, zImage.bin and initrd.bin?
I found a link on Angstroms site to build a custom install, but I have no idea what to do with it.
I also can't get a build to work.  I keep getting fails.  I just wanted X-11 or Opie.  SMB/NFS.  If I keep a minicomputer, maybe a web browser of some sort.

I'm sorry this is noobish, but I haven't touched my zaurus  in ages...I'm a noob again.

Thanks,

Hi,

I have a C1000 that would make an excellent test/dev device for the Zaurus Community.
The LCD is pristine, no scratches or anything like that.  I actually purchased this new in
Akihabra, Japan.

For Sale:

1 C1000 running zubuntu
1 Original AC/DC Power Adapter
1 Original box with all manuals and install CD (and its still shiny!)

I tried to find a good price but I can't find one on Ebay to compare.

Send me your offer.

Sincerely,

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / 3.5.4.1 Is Great!
« on: April 19, 2007, 12:14:18 pm »
Hello,

After using cacko on my C1000 for about 1 year, I decided to give OZ a try again.  I have to admit that it  has come to a really nice stable point.

Wireless works with my linksys CF card, and suspend and resume work fine as well.  Rotation works as well as konqueror.  Although in konqueror, I sometimes have to hit a link twice, but thats ok.  It works.

The only pressing issue that I have is that I recently starting watching DL.TV (Video Tech Show, with Patrick Norton and crew about Technology) it comes in a few formats that can be downloaded and they have one for IPOD and PSP in a mp4 file.
There is also a .H264 and Divx file, but I figure those maybe to tough to decode on the processor for the zaurus.

Can OpieMediaPlayer 2 play this type of file?
If so, what decoder do I need to download?

Will mplayer play this and like OMP2 what decoder do I need to download?

I used to use kino (which was a wrapper gui for mplayer) does that work in the current OZ as well?

I like to use the gui with mplayer since using a PDA I tend to have the stylus in had more often the opening the keyboard and flipping between keyboard and thumb typing with the stylus could cause me to lose the stylus.

Help would be great.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Next Pdaxrom Release W/ Different Images?

I think that it would be better, easier, and less painful for people to simply package up their configurations for WMs, or even a whole new WM package, and post them. This would make it much easier to try out WMs without reflashing.

Just my opinion.

Great Idea!  I like that as well.  Perhaps we need a meta-package that will grab the window manager, specific applets (clocks, wifi connection, date etc), and configuration package to be installed.

Any other ideas?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Next Pdaxrom Release W/ Different Images?
« on: November 07, 2006, 08:16:40 pm »
Hi,

I was wondering if there are enough resources (people) available to create standard images for different window managers.

I feel that it would take a lot of work out of the end user's hand if for example a user can go to the pdaxrom website and have a choice of which window manager image he/she would like to install on top of pdaxrom.

For example, if I would like to try fluxbox, I could download the fluxbox tailored image, flash my Zaurus and have a complete already configured environment.  The main benefit here is that a person that is completely knowledgeable about the window manager could make it easier for others to try.  It can only expand the use of pdaxrom.  Personally I don't necessarily know where all the configuration files for each window manager reside.  So when I switch to XFCE, I have to do a lot to research on how to install it and configure it.

Tell me what you think?

Sharp ROMs / Mounting Smbfs

Also ensure that you're mounting as root, although if you're not having any sudo errors, you're probably already root
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=134435\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Right,

I put my smbmount in /mnt so I had to be root to begin with to get write permissions.  I also was root when I did do the mount.  It does work.  I'm not sure if the password option is really needed since after I get the code page errors, I still have to put my password in again.

Good Luck,

Sharp ROMs / How To Get Address Data From Qtopia
« on: July 05, 2006, 11:19:28 am »
Hi,

I have all my address data in Qtopia Desktop.  I also have it in Kontact.

What is the best way and simplist to get it into my Cacko Address book?

In OZ I  had to disable security and then qtopia found my Zaurus and I just synced it together.

Thanks,

Sharp ROMs / Video Encoding With Dvd::rip
« on: July 04, 2006, 09:11:30 pm »
OK, my litttle experiment showed something interesting.
All the video's had Xvid4 Compression with mp3 stereo sound, kino2 seems to show it as mad but I don't think that is the case.  The video file sizes were 600 MB for the 16x9 video and 101 MB for the 4x3 Video

Encoding at 640x480 for a video was just a tiny bit too difficult for the zaurus to play.  If you don't mind a screen skip every few seconds then that maybe fine.

The video that I was using at the 640x352 (the maintained aspect ratio) played much better.  I'm under the assumption that the black bars that the 16x9 video actually helped me a bit.  I guess that mplayer doesn't have to work as had since it knows the frames are always black?

In conclusion...

16x9 (widescreen video) maintaining the aspect ratio seemed to help.  Also I did use Turbo Mode.  Figured why not if it didn't kill my zaurus.  Also I found the I ran into problems with the 'Q' key, that had a function that I set to none so I don't accidentally press it again.  This was all done in kino2

My 4x3 video was encoded at 320x240 and using software scaling for full screen played great and looked good as well!  No fram skip or anything what so ever.  This was all done in kino2

What does this mean to you?  Well if you pick up a large CF or SD card you got yourself one heck of a video player!

I'm not exactly sure what video chipset the C1000 uses, somewhere in the forum I thought it was pointed out it was an ATI chip.  Too bad ATI is so closed about releasing source code for their drivers if that is the case.  A PDA hardly is at the top of the mountian in terms of performance to a main stream PC video card.

xamindar,

I picked mine up from newegg.  They had a special with a rebate (ugh).  Should come to about $70.00.  I hope.

Sharp ROMs / 4gb Cards With Cacko
« on: July 04, 2006, 01:37:08 pm »
Hi,

You do need the driver that dproidan gave you.  If you don't use it, it cause the zaurus to hang until you remove the SD card.

And yes, I have a 150X 4 Gig Sd Card by Transcend (Zaurus reports it as a Hitachi) and it works great with the driver.

Sharp ROMs / Video Encoding With Dvd::rip
« on: July 04, 2006, 01:34:52 pm »
Hi,

I am running Cacko 1.23 (I belive that this is with the version that comes with mplayer optimized for the C1000)

I used dvd::rip to encode video at 640x352 (that was the aspect ratio that dvd::rip figured out after I said to change the witch to 640.

I've seen alot of things talk about video and hardware acceleration in this forum.  Seems like everyone has their own "magic formula" to give smooth video.

I noticed that the about video started to play much quicker then when I used a 320x252 video that I was playing before using the sofware scaling feature in kino2.  I figured that the smaller resolution would play better even if it were software scaled to 640x480'ish.  It played smoothly but I could tell the processor must be working hard and I wasn't sure if the video hardware offloading any of the work.

When I did play the video re-encoded  640x352, it was fine, but the video would skip a little every few seconds, but it was playing without  software scaling.  This is very exciting because it means that I was able to play my Xvid4 encoded video at full screen.  Was hardware acceleration now working?

So I would like to know if I forced the video to be cropped to 640x480 (not the true aspect ratio of the video) encoded in Xvid4, would it play smoother?

Perhaps we should figure out where to put a true wiki-howto on how to encode video for each of the  Zaurus family's (ie, the 860's are a little different then the cx00 series etc) with programs that can be used for each OS.

As we speak I am re-encoding the video to 640x480 (breaking the aspect ratio a little) to see if it would play any better.

Back in a few hours with the result.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Rom Image Requirements?
« on: June 30, 2006, 11:08:16 pm »
Hi,

I've been using Cacko for a while now.  Opera and Netfront are great for browsing.  Kino seems to crash often during a movie(s) in Xvid4.  I happen to be watching videos alot more now.  So I'm looking to try another Rom Image on my C1000 that may have better video support.

I've used Matchbox, the default WM, but for some reason on my C1000, the applets always seem to dispear on their own.

I saw a whole bunch of howto's for XFCE, and a build of E17 from the OZ guys.
Which rom image with video support is the most stable?
What video player (one with a gui is best so I can easily just point and click a video quickly)?

Is there a XFCE image I can try?  It would be great if that was an option on the download page.

Also on the PDAxRom main paing I saw a link dating back to Jan 06 about installing KDE and using it as the default WM.  Does the howto using the whole squashfs thing still needed for beta4 or do I install KDE from the feeds now?
