General Discussion / Help! I Can't Get My Z To Del From Sd Card
« on: February 23, 2007, 11:41:20 pm »
Thank you all for your input....

Antikx...the SD works fine in my digital camera, which is the only other device I have that takes an SD.   It's a 64 MB card, with one 32KB file on it.  I suppose the card could be corrupt, but it does work in the camera.  Maybe the camera messed it up?

craigtyson...I don't have an SD reader on my laptop.  None of those commands worked

  "umount..." returned "operation not permitted"
"fsck..." returned "fsck.auto not found" "Error 2 while executing"
"mount..." returned "permission denied.  Are you root?"

tml...I suppose it could have been, but I wouldn't know how to do that.  When I typed mount at the command line, the following returned:

   /dev/root on / type jffs2 (ro)
/proc on /proc type proc (rw)
/dev/ram1 on /dev type minix (rw)
   /dev/mtdblock3 on /home type jffs2 (rw,noatime)
none on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)
none on /dev/pts type devpts (rw)
/dev/mmcda1 on /usr/mnt.rom/card type vfat (ro)

I'm assuming the (ro)'s and (rw)'s stand for read-only and read-write; I'm also assuming that that represents a list of things that are "mounted" on my Z.

I'm thinking I should just buy another SD cardand see if it works...

General Discussion / Help! I Can't Get My Z To Del From Sd Card
« on: February 16, 2007, 11:27:48 pm »
I have a 5600, which has no modifications.  Just an out of the box Z.

I used to use my Z often, transfering and deleting files from the SD card all the time, then I got a laptop and the Z somewhat took a back seat.  In the interim, something happened that makes me incapable of deleting files from the SD card.  The card is not locked, and I'm not someone that tinkers with terminal or anything like that..I play Q word game a lot, and take some meeting notes.

I have no idea what I could have done to cause this...does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks in advance...

Software / 5600 No Longer Records Audio
« on: June 17, 2006, 03:05:38 pm »
I recently tried to use my Z to record a memo after a meeting, something which I've done before...but not all that often.

when I open "voice recorder" and tap the red dot, it tells me "Unable to open recording file".

Any ideas why?

Software / 5600 - Q Word Game - Replace Dictionary?
« on: December 27, 2005, 10:06:08 pm »
How does one replace the crapy dictionary that comes with Q- Word game on the 5600?

The damn thing pulls words out of ether like "amyl" and "agog", but doesn't recognize "stone".  I would like to replace the file, if at all possible...

I use the docking station that came with the Z...I guess that's USB, right?

Windows Issues / Syncing Problem - Z5600 And Outlook 2003
« on: January 03, 2005, 10:43:56 am »
gsja_ent:

After I reinstalled the software (Intellisync only) I've had no problems at all.  I surmise that when my IT group updated Outlook to 2003...it's an automated update that happened company wide one night...that whatever file facilitates the connection was overwritten.

Oddly, it was connecting (the transfer window was opening on the Z screen), but nothing would happen.  Regardless, reinstalling did work.  I do not have Qtopia loaded on my desktop...Inever use it.

My Z is syncing with two different machines...my corporate XP machine with Outlook 2003, and my personal win98 machine with Outlook 2000.  I have no problems either way.  I sync with the work PC daily, and then when I go home on the weekends I update the home machine.

The problems you describe aren't problems I have had.  I've noted quite a fw people on these boards having syncing problems...I couldn't explain it.  I do know that when I first purchased my Z, I couldn't get it to sync...my IT group had to give me administrative rights to my desktop PC.  But, that problem took about a half hour to fix, and it worked nearly flawlessly until they upgraded to 2003.

I say nearly, because I've noted that the USB connection works better in some ports than others.  My old work PC had 2 open at the rear...sync worked in one and not the other.  My new work PC has 1 in the rear and 2 in the front, none of them give a problem.  My home PC hase 2 in the keyboard and 1 in the rear, the one in the rear is a bit iffy at times but the keyboard works fine.

My point, after all of this drivel, is that maybe you have either bad USB ports or need to change your privaledges somehow.  Note hat file transfer worked in the bad USB ports, just not sync.

Hope this all helps, and welcome to the boards!

Well, I'm shocked no one has run into this problem before...but I did fix it!

Simply reinstalled all the Z software...

Windows Issues / Syncing Problem - Z5600 And Outlook 2003
« on: December 28, 2004, 12:06:27 pm »
Has anyone experienced problems syncing between Outlook 2003 and their Z's?

I've never had a problem before...but overnight my corporate IT group updated Outlook to 2003, and now sync doesn't work with my SL-5600.  They won't fix the problem, because it's a personal PDA and not the companies.

Is there an update to the syncing software, perhaps?

Just in case the info comes into play somehow...I have made no ROM changes (came with 1.32), and I'm using the sync software provided by Sharp.  I'm simply not computer literate enough to tinker around with the stuff I read about up here

thanks in advance!

General Discussion / How to change screen saver
« on: March 04, 2004, 01:46:58 pm »
Wow, thanks for all the input....

tapjpa....that file no longer exists on my Z, I had removed it previously.

greg2....I do have filemanager installed; I installed it when all you guys helped me load \"terminal\".  I looked up /usr/QtPalmtop.rom/pics and found both  \"logo-zaurus.png\" and \"Zaurus_logo.png\".  I viewed each and noted that \"Zaurus_logo.png\" is the screensaver image.  So.....

I copied “Zaurus_logo.png” to a new filename in /home/zaurus/Documents/Image_Files, just so that I still have the image.  I then used file manager to look for \"/home/QtPalmtop/Settings/qpe.conf\" as per raybert’s post….that folder does not appear on my Z.

I made note that the icon in filemanger for what I named “originalzlogo.png” was different than the “trekscreensaver.png” icon.  Lo and behold, I could not open “originalzlogo.png”.   I then went back into terminal (always in terminal as “su”) and went back to /usr/QtPalmtop.rom/pics.  I ran the command “cp Zaurus_logo.png Zaurus_logo1.png” and was given the error “cp: unable to open ‘Zaurus_logo1.png’: Read-only file system”

As it turns out, I can’t “cp” “rm” or “mv” Zaurus_logo.png.  Realizing that if I couldn’t run those commands on a read-only file I wouldn’t be able to overwrite it either, I tried that….and as I expected it did not work.  However, regardless of the error messages, I later noted that “Zaurus_logo.png” DID successfully copy to my “Documents” folder

Now, I have a meeting to go to and lunch is over……so I will give up for now.  I think later on tonight I’ll try that LUSScreensaver thing from home….though I really prefer doing things the hard way before using the easy tool.  I cannot load the site at work…it’s in Japanese and I can’t install the converters here.

Thanks again for the input….I’ll keep you all posted on what happens…….

General Discussion / How to change screen saver
« on: March 03, 2004, 11:28:29 pm »
Thanks for the input Greg...unfortunately, my Zaurus must be an anomaly.  Removing \"logo-zaurus.png\" didn\'t change the screen saver either.

On a hunch, I listed \"*logo.* and looked at them all....none of them are the Zaurus logo on the screen saver.  Of course, I no longer have \"logo-zaurus.png\" or \"Zaurus_logo.png\" so I have no idea what they actually looked like or were used for before I started this process.

I then proceeded to rename a copy of “treksaver.png” to “logo-zaurus.png” and copy that to /home/QtPalmtop/pics.  However, the jumping Zaurus logo persisted.

So, I took a radical step and copied “*.png” to my PC, and viewed all 168 of them in Irfanview.  None of them are the jumping Zaurus screen saver.

Therefore, I’m led to believe that the screen saver image is not actually located in /home/QtPalmtop/pics.  Not having the time or energy to search further this evening, I will postpone the search until tomorrow when I’m at the office and can actually be paid for screwing around on my Z…..

Good night from Jersey!

General Discussion / How to change screen saver
« on: March 03, 2004, 01:48:48 pm »
Once I loaded terminal (see other thread), I followed the directions at the FAQ and this page to change my screensaver....

I found that after deleting \"Zaurus_logo.png\", I do not get a clock...the screensaver image is unchanged.  Renaming \"treksaver.png\" to \"Zaurus_logo.png\" and copying it over also does nothing to get rid of the dancing Zaurus logo.

My home/QtPalmtop/pics folder currently does not have a file named \"Zaurus_logo.png\"...and here I sit looking at a dancing Zaurus logo anyway.

Do the directions work for 5500 only?  I\'ve run through the sequence about 6 times now to no avail.

Any ideas?

General Discussion / How to access the "terminal"???
« on: March 02, 2004, 02:54:36 pm »
Well...once I found the time to change the screensaver, I did something wrong.

I downloaded \"trekscreensaver.png\" to my \"Install_Files\" folder and renamed it to \"Zaurus_logo.png\"
I then went to terminal, enter the su command, and went to the the \"Install_Files\" folder.
I entered the command \"cp Zaurus_logo.png /home/QtPalmtop/pics/Zaurus_logo.png\"
I then confirmed that the file had copied (I had previously deleted the original, so the file wouldn\'t show up at all had the copy not been successful).
I then exited terminal, and waited for the screensaver to come on

but it still is the Zaurus logo......

What did I do wrong?

General Discussion / How to access the "terminal"???
« on: March 01, 2004, 01:43:43 pm »
Thanks to all!

I have installed terminal...and been to it.  Can\'t find the  / on the the damn keyboard, but I know there is a list of keystrokes around here somewhere.  I haven\'t had the time to use terminal to change my screensaver yet.  I did try to use filemanager (like the guy in the other thread), but I guess it doesn\'t work because you need to be \"root\" and not \"zaurus\".

no big...I\'ll get to it later.

Thanks for all the input....

General Discussion / How to access the "terminal"???
« on: February 27, 2004, 12:53:39 pm »
I am about as newbie as newbie gets....so this has got to be the correct forum to post in.

I have just purchased a 5600, it is my very first handheld.  Also, I have zero Linux experience.  I have been looking around here at ZUG, answering questions for myself and playing with my Z.

I\'ve been able to answer most questions as I\'ve come to them, except one...how does one exit the GUI and get to the \"terminal\"?

All I want to do (for now) is install a new screen saver (the Trek one), and the how-to-doc gives some cryptic stuff that looks like something from my old DOS 3.0 PC.  I\'m assuming \"terminal\" is what an old timer like me calls a \"command prompt\", but I can\'t find the confounded thing.

Please help a newbie out.....

Thanks in advance
