Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Stupid Question: Where Are The Tetex Binaries?
« on: October 25, 2006, 01:18:06 pm »
No, that's not it either. I did a "find . -type f -perm /u+x" to find all executables within the OZ tetex ipks I had expanded, and there are no executables of any kind except for a few uninteresting scripts under ./share/texmf/doc and ./share/texmf/scripts.

I've been using teTeX on various linux boxes for 10 years since it was at version 0.3, so I generally know where the bodies are buried. I don't want to build it myself if I don't have to - I only have the native gcc available to me, and I don't have the knowledge or resources to get a crosscompiler running.

I can still only conclude that at least one ipk is missing from the feed, and that no one else has tried to use these ipks to install a running tex system. I very much hope to be proved wrong - what am I missing?

Yes, I had done that, but that only uncovers the texmf tree - stuff that goes into /usr/share/texmf on my desktop. Where is the stuff that goes into /usr/bin?

I had downloaded all the listed tetex ipks, expanded them using ar, unpacked each data.tar.gz, and dug through for anything that looks like a binary (234 MB of stuff). No luck. If I do something like "find . -name latex", all I get are the directory names in /usr/share/texmf/tex, .../doc, and the font directories.

So I must repeat my question: what ipk contains /usr/bin/tex, /usr/bin/latex, etc.?

Thanks, and sorry to be a pain, but I'm assuming someone is running tex successfully, otherwise it would make no sense to have only the very large texmf tree.

Hi,

I think I'm just being blind, but what ipk contains the binaries from the teTeX package? The texmf tree is in the 3.5.4 and 3.5.4.1 feeds and has all the usual support files, but I don't see any executables e.g. /usr/bin/tex. I'm using OZ/Opie 3.5.4.1 on a 3100. Pointers, please?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Floating Point Exceptions With Native Gcc
« on: July 24, 2006, 01:24:34 pm »
Hello all,

I'm do a lot of python tinkering on my C3100 (thanks Mickey!), and I'm interested in getting numpy-1.0b1 compiled and running on it. (numpy is the successor to the Numeric that is included in the python feed, but the Numeric there is at least 4 versions out of date and is not as capable as numpy.) I installed all the gcc stuff from the OZ-3.5.4.1 feed on the Z to compile natively, and successfully compiled the slang libraries and the jed editor (my favorite lightweight emacs replacement).

After a number of tweaks, I've made good headway on installing numpy, but I get stuck on the (lack of) definitions of the floating point exceptions one should find in <bits/fenv.h>; things like FE_DIVBYZERO, etc.

I can probably make something up to at least finish the install, but I'd like to know if someone else has already dealt with this, or if there are definitions from the softfloat library that might be used.

numpy itself includes homespun fenv.h and fenv.c files for architectures that don't already provide them, but these use i386 assembler instructions and cannot therefore be used here.

Any pointers? Thanks.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Python Questions
« on: April 10, 2006, 11:57:40 am »
1) The other ipks contain various modules that you may or may not use, depending on your needs. A full blown python installation is something like 40 MB, so I think the python_2.4.1 ipk is only the core.

2) Make sure the readline ipks are installed. This means both the regular readline ipk and something like python-readline.

3) I haven't tried idle itself, but for Tk applications, you need tcl/tk installed, in addition to python-tkinter.

4) Not sure on #4. I use books :-)

This is all from memory, so the filenames might vary a bit. All of the above work for me, so you should be able to get what you want. Good luck.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Feed Confusion
« on: January 26, 2006, 01:19:12 pm »
anunakin - I had looked in the 760-860 feed and didn't see it there, either. I'm curious if someone has it, but hasn't put it in the feed.

lardman - thanks for the heads-up. I don't really want to learn about the toolchain quite yet, but maybe I'll have a go if there are no prepackaged versions.

Thanks all.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Feed Confusion
« on: January 26, 2006, 01:00:46 pm »
Please help a pdaXrom newbie. (I had a 5500 several years ago and loved it, but a 3100 only for several weeks, and I started playing with pdaXrom yesterday.)

I saw in other threads that gpe-pim might fill my PIM needs. I had been using ko/pi when I still had the Cacko ROM, but would like to try something else. However, gpe-pim doesn't exist in the 1000-3100 feed, nor in any of the others. Where might I find it?

More generally, what are the relationships between the feeds? Can I use planner from the X/Qt feed on the 3100? (One other thread implied I can't.) How could a planner package "be made to show up" in the 1000-3100 feed?

Thanks.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Error opening terminal: xterm
« on: October 05, 2004, 12:13:24 pm »
Hmm, I've just started playing with OZ 3.5.1, so I don't think I've installed too many things to confuse the issue. I installed ncurses, ncurses-terminfo, and nano. Possibly relevant environment variables in the opie-terminal are:

CONSOLE=/dev/console
TERM=vt100

Did you run ipkg-link add ... after you installed each of the packages? Did you run ldconfig?

Sorry if you've already done all of this, but these are some of the things I've done along the way to get everything happy.

Good luck.

You also need to install ncurses-terminfo. This fixed it for me. It should be added to someone's dependency chain somewhere ...

The backups will restore everything (plenty of experience :?), but you will definitely need a 32+ MB card. After loading up my goodies, my backup files are typically 24-27 MB.

The song format was OGG - I ripped the CD myself. I settled on xmms because 1) I use it on my desktop, so I know the name, and 2) it allows me to fast forward and rewind, which the builtin player (with the OGG codec) wouldn\'t do. I\'d be happy to try any other (free) OGG-compatible, GUI-driven players, but I\'m only aware of the builtin player, xmms, and the OTR players.

There was a discussion some time ago about the audio quality of a Zaurus. For reasons which are entirely pointless, I plugged my 5500 into my audio rack driving a 15\" bass guitar amp. The details for the gearheads:

Zaurus SL-5500
xmms v7
Kawai MX-8R mixer
Alesis Quadraverb effects processor
Peavey TNT 150 15\" bass amp
Juno Reactor - \"Conga Fury\" (appropriate techno tune)

Let\'s just say that the results were _quite_ satisfactory! :twisted:

Just one more person to chime in:

1) It\'s definitely the Cacko kernel - no problems before flashing
2) My battery is brand new and is just fine
3) It doesn\'t charge at all when it\'s flashing
4) Some combination of suspending, resuming, and plugging it in fixes it
5) It\'s annoying, but the Cacko kernel has many benefits

Still I hope there is an updated Cacko kernel that fixes this!

Software / Why doesn\'t the xmms GUI work on Sharp ROM?
« on: May 01, 2004, 01:44:07 am »
Arf. I was just going to proudly announce that I got it all figured out, but you beat me to it by 2 hours :-) The key for me was learning to use \"#! /bin/bash --login\" in my shell script: then the Apps icon started working (as user zaurus). I\'ll post my full set of notes on Monday. Maybe if others are interested, we can craft a HOWTO?

Thanks for your insights, cmisip. I\'m off to enjoy a few tunes :-)

Software / Why doesn\'t the xmms GUI work on Sharp ROM?
« on: April 29, 2004, 04:28:11 pm »
Yes, I caught the \"export LOGNAME\" thing from the other thread.

I do have a new data point. I have a little script with the following:

#! /bin/sh
LOGNAME=root
sudo /home/QtPalmtop/bin/xmms

This works reliably when run from a command prompt as user zaurus. I\'ve tickled so many permissions, that I\'m not sure it is sufficient, but it does work. I now compare results when I run this script vs. when I run /home/QtPalmtop/bin/xmms directly (from the command prompt). They both dump the same information to the screen up through loading the playlist, but then the plain \"xmms\" command hangs when trying to start some timer. This is what I see:

Quote
...
Added /usr/mnt.rom/card/Documents/audio/ogg/12_Storms_In_Africa_II.ogg
Playlist loaded
pl set pos flushing
SONGSPLAYED=0
                   ------    this is where it hangs; if I use the script, I then see the following
Creating timer object
Making connections
Starting timer
Initializing done
Starting playing
Setting oss_p_p
...

So I guess there is some timer somewhere that \"zaurus\" isn\'t allowed to touch, but \"root\" is. It doesn\'t seem to be something in /dev (I\'ve changed all the permissions), maybe something in the kernel that qt accesses?

I\'ll keep slogging.

Mike
