Off Topic forum / Apple PDA Rumors Abuzz
« on: March 15, 2004, 06:31:47 pm »
Well, this will open up Slashdot season for the Apple Zelots and their \"Apple Innovaes\" mantra  It\'ll be the \'first 64 bit desktop\' thing all over again - my Mesh Alpha desktop is still pissed about that one

On the other hand it might well be called innovating - taking a fantastic product and actually marketing it so people know it exists.

I\'m still not going to trade in my Z though

Software / best video format for the zaurus
« on: March 13, 2004, 03:35:38 pm »
At least for cartoons you cannot beat Real Media. It encodes them cleanly to about 1-2mb per minute with acceptable quality.

Has anyone looked at porting the Helix RM codec to the Zaurus? Or does the mplayer one work already?

For films probably xvid is best, just turn the quality right down.

Personally I like the internet without flash  I even surf using the \'mobile device\' links on my desktop - usually get max one (static) ad per page, everything downloads very fast, a much nicer experience, something like it used to be back in 1994 before the fwits, corporate scum and flash came to the internet. Except this time, everyone realises that animated gifs are foul - and no BLINK tag in sight. Yay!

Or, the more simple answer, add another box to the quick reply area requesting a name. (Any will do.)

Don\'t accept the post until a name has been put in. That way it gets easier to keep track but no regestration is required.

I wouldn\'t have bothered joining this forum if I had to register to ask my first few questions. And the quick reply box makes it much easier to answer questions quickly when pressed for time )

Mac Issues / Poll: Which Zaurus model do you use with your Mac?

Do we have just 10 Mac owners (10 answers within 1 week) within the 2149 subscribers?
Apples hopefully rising market share of more than 2-3% would let me expect at least 43 users...

What, on a forum for Linux embedded devices? Mac users? ;o)

Maybe the ones who have migrated from other UNIX systems, but the general Mac userbase has more of a reputation for being interested in Shiny Things, and Sharp\'s half assed advertising of the Zaurus never made it publicly known as The Most Shiny Thing Of All.

I have the opposite reaction, a few days of using OS X drives me around the bend and wishing hard for an environment where MouseFocus, seamless X forwarding (having some Aqua apps you cant remote with X is annoying) from machine to machine, very fast response times and a desktop that\'s basicly a holding place for aterms is possible

All that eye candy may look nice, but it kills my productivity. Still, I\'d rather use a Mac than a Windows box - I\'d even consider buying a G5 or IBM PPC970 system to run Linux on the hardware is so nice.

Security and Networking / Dial up timeouts
« on: March 06, 2004, 09:53:33 pm »
Every time I try and dial up with my 6310i it stays connected for 56secs to 63 seconds then drops the connection if it is in use or not.

The phone works fine with the same initialisation commands from my laptop.

The chat script timeou (-t 60) seems to be for something else, and even when set to 600 it still drops every 1 minute.

Any ideas?

Cxx0 Hardware / Overclocking / Underclocking...

Presumably installing this ROM on any device will leave it in a normal clock state by default unless you change it?

Sharp ROMs / Cacko ROM Question
« on: March 06, 2004, 04:00:21 pm »
Even with the C7x0 keyboard you can\'t beat the command prompt as a file manager, at least until someone releases one that doesn\'t require the mouse and supports regexps

Is there a way to generate an Escape?

I like vi/vim, but without esc it can\'t be used.

If you set up USB networking you can then use whatever services you have available on the Zaurus/Desktop.

I have the Cacko ROM installed (but you can install the packages on the Sharp ROM) and use SSH/SFTP/SCP to move stuff around over USB and WiFi.

Still, I think the USB mass storage is probably the simplest method and the one I will be using 99% of the time now I upgraded to a rom that supports it )

Cxx0 General discussions / Opera on high res screens and collum mode
« on: March 04, 2004, 11:49:31 am »
Collum mode in Opera was fantasitc on the 5500, much better than content wrap on NetFront.

However on the C750 (Opera 7, Cacko ROM) it still uses 5500 width collums... so it only uses about 10% of the screen. Any ideas on how to change this?

Software / SSH and connecting to networks
« on: March 04, 2004, 11:47:02 am »
I am using SSH to connect to my proxy server, eg:

ssh -Nf host -l user -L 3128:cache:3128
ssh -Nf host -l user -L 1080:localhost:1080

run from a shell script. This all works for Opera, NetFront, Gaim etc etc. (Dante Sockd and Squid for the curious).

I would like to give this an icon on the net tab but softlinking the script into /usr/local/bin donesn\'t give the option to use it when I try and add an icon from the Tab system setting widget.

I would also like to be able to kill these ssh sessions when I disconnect. killall -9 ssh doesn\'t kill anything, even though a ssh process is running. Is there anyway to write the PID from SSH to a file and then use that in the kill script, or a form for killall that will work?

It would also be nifty for these script to be able to bring up/drop the network interface, something like:

/etc/init.d/net.eth0 start
sleep 5
ssh ...
ssh...

on my desktop... any ideas as to what the command would be on a Zaurus?

Thanks.

*Probably* Fn - pressing Fn-C works as Ctrl-C in vi, but may not have the same function in other apps, I haven\'t tested it.
