Zaurus - pdaXrom / Linuxworld And Pdaxrom:
« on: February 24, 2005, 04:08:12 pm »
Hay relm I was there too and I'm with you, it would have been great to see some pda tables there.  nomater what the distro it would have been fun to see.  some booth I dont know who gave away an 860 I did see the person who got it, and he wasent to sure what to do with it, it was still in japanese I think, so I pointed him here.

I had a number of poeple stop me about my 860 as well, expecialy at the booths I was using it to take notes at.

the one upside I did see was that Trolltech/QT had a booth, and some of the people there ware very knolageable as far as working with and developing on the Z.

insadently are you local to boston or just up for the show.

General Discussion / Its back sharps devnet

Ray,
I think I miss stated myself, I wasent implying that ZUG ever would host anythign that they shouldent.  I dont think Sharp is going to show the code for the PIM apps and maybe other things publicly.  however it wouldent suprise me to see a section of the site for \"registerd\" (read \"paid out the A**\") users who would have access to said locked code.  I dont think this is somthing that ZUG wants to be responsable for, to much work and to risky.  Sory that all came out wrong the first time.

Ray,
I agree, by no means should ZUG be alowed to fall by the wayside, it is the beter site by a long way.  I think Devnet would serve the corprite development comunity very well however.  Given that the forign market suport by Sharp is loosely backed by the \"Head Office\" at best it is very unlikely that devnet will ever be able to provide the level of comunity suport that ZUG does.

On the other side of that coin, there are things that we all want Sharp to play nice with, like opening up the PIM apps.  Sharp has made it clear that they are not going to make that code publicly availabe.  Do we want as a comuinity to ask the Wonderful admins of ZUG to take on the responsabilty of hosting such propiratery code?  If Zug did host such things and somthing went wrong it would be the end of ZUG, not worth the risk in my opinion.  If Devnet were to become a place for \"Legal Developers\" to get suport on the closed parts of Sharps code we would all benafit emencely.  And really would some world class comercial apps for the Z be a bad thing, it would make it easer for business to justify being a licenced Sharp developer.

Have you ever tried to get some piece of clueless management to approve you developing on a cool new piece of hardware.  A few half supported sites and some screenshots go a long way.

Not to mention sharp may have been useless in the past but if we all ever want to make the Zaurus a influential system in the US and Europe then we really need to back sharp up ware ever it may be helpful.

Sharp may have abandoned us in the past but with hardware as cool as the Z do we really want to, or can we afford to stoop to there level and abandon them?

I can\'t say I agree there, I think devnet is important to some people.  It\'s things like manufacturer supported development communities that big biz likes to see.  Devnet would also make a safe place for authorized developers to get assistance with proprietary sharp code, like address book stuff.

We\'re checking on the down site with the colo center. I agree with you all that the ZUG is the place to go for community cooperation. The Zaurus.com site is not intended to compete with ZUG, but will hopefully provide the downloads of source code, ROMs, etc. that everyone needs.
I ask then, why does it need a forum, wouldent it serve the comunity best to just link to the Zug forums?

I\'ve been told that the US doesn\'t charge duty on electronics. I have no confirmation on this - US Customs\' website isn\'t comprehendable.

As far as I can tell the US does atleast list things like portable computers in a import tax group so it should be taxed.  I didn\'t get taxed when I imported mine so ho knows.

for refrence things like portable computers seem to fall under the grouping headed by neucular power devices and equitment.  least thats ware I found it.

What model SMC card do you have?  I had no problem geting mine to work on a 5500.
you should just be able to go into the network setings and set up a new network connection with an SSID of any and dhcp assigned IP address.  The default config of most wireless access points should alow you to connect at that point.

Windows Issues / Sync Options

does anyone know how exactly the syncing comunicates with the zaurus, what does it use for datatransfer.  I\'m guessing it\'s an rpc call since thats all that seams to be running on my Z.  is there a spec sheet for this sort of stuff, or really any developer docs at all?

Software / Finance app required
« on: May 17, 2004, 03:42:21 pm »
What exactly would people be looking for in a banking app?
I\'ve been using zmoney for a bit now and not to thrilled with it.
I\'ve allso been thinking about developing for the Z but havent really had a good enough reason, and this sounds like one.
What fetures would people want?
and what if anything would people be willing to pay, I would likely GPL the project anyway but figured I\'d ask.

JMBOWMAN: what do you use for a dev rig, I\'ve messed around trying to set things up on my rh9 laptop and havent gotten far.  any tips would be great.

Is is posable to write scripts to interface with portabase? something like perl\'s DBI, or the equivalent in python?  this would be great for people trying to make there database apps as platform independent as posable.
