On the HP48 topic: Link? My concerns here are that it may not fit on the screen well, it may be more complicated than necessary, and that it may be overly large (in KB/MB, not pixels).
I think I got my copy from here:
https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=17031

The package size is about 100K  and you need a ROM image which uses 512K. As you can see from the above link it has been patched for a 640x480 screen so it fits just right.

hmm, I'd love to start taking my Z to Uni and use it as a calculator. I've only tried a couple of calcs on the Z (apparently the best available) but they just didn't feel usable enough to replace my regular Scientific at uni. If this works as well as it _looks_ then I'd also like to see this included. it's a real-world app that could help make my Z that bit more practical in day-to-day use.

In fact, I really hope this entire project (PdaXRom v2) improves on the standard of currently available distros! Really want to start taking my Z seriously asap!

Capt_n_Fish/InSearchOf/et all ... go for it!! I and (ig uess) quite a few others are rooting for you on this  Just wish I had the skills necessary to contribute myself...

Well, I'm not one to obsess with the idea of new Zaurus "replacements". I purchased my Zaurus only a few weeks ago, fully aware that it was a discontinued product. I love my Z and it's in a league all of its own... . .

BUT, I'm definitely intrigued by this new thing that has just appeared on the JKKMobile Blogg. I have no idea who is manufacturing it or when it's due to arrive, but it looks very promising at first sight (well, from what you can see of it in the video).

If anyone comes across any further details on this, please post as I have not managed to find out anything else. Here is the original JKKMobile News post which includes a short YouTube video video of the device's presentation.

Oh dam....
I run into something very horrible!
It's probably more than what you guys are asking for...
Will also install Debian on my Eee PC and apply the same "thing" as on my Z now.
Stay tuned.

Hi ZDevil,

These configuration tweaks and enhancements sound great. It's little details like these that really make a distro. feel "solid" and complete and give them that instant "YES! I like this distro" effect, at least for Linux n00bs (like myself) who are not as skilled as yourself and others on this forum. I will have a go at some of these new scripts and config. ideas, as soon as I have some free time. After your last post tho, I think I'll hold out to see just what horror you have just encountered (so i can avoid them myself)!

Anyway, this distro really seems to be taking shape as a nice, complete and functional whole..

*me waiting with baited-breath for news update from ZDevil!

Debian / A Clean, Fresh, Configured Eabi Rootfs Tarball
« on: March 28, 2008, 07:43:34 pm »
Hi,

I have just installed Yonggun's  kernel.img.2.6.24-yonggun-hda1 kernel and modules-2.6.24-yonggun.tar.gz modules....aswell as Zdevil's zaurus_eabi_rootfs_071201.tar.bz2 Rootfs onto my internal CF drive.

Everything seems to work ok so far, I just have a couple of questions:

1) Should such things as my SD card "automount" when inserted? With my installation, when I insert an SD card it is not automatically detected. So, is this normal for this installation?

2) Also, a few applications, such as XMMS and Dillio, etc are nowhere to be seen in the program launcher/taskbar. I have to execute these apps from the command line instead. Infact, very few apps (system file browsers, word processors, etc) are visible from the application launch menu - which is surprising considering how large the Rootfs is. I guess they are all hidden somewhere on the drive? Again, is this standard for this distro?

3) There are no app links setup on the desktop, no access to any GUI Filebrowser on desktop (or even in the app launcher) , etc unlike distros such as PdaXRom where everything is immediately accessible...

So, I just want to know if these things are normal or have I screwed up the installation somehow causing the configuration of these things not to work properly...

thanks for any info...

There  is an online Japanese site that has all sorts of parts for the Zaurus.
I looked through my 300+ Zaurus bookmarks, but cannot find it.
It's mentioned here on this forum somewhere.
They carry screen parts, case shells, and a whole lot more for the Zaurus.
I just wish I could find it now...

I am in a similar situation with my SL-5500. My 5500 works fine, only it has a crack on the screen and so the touchscreen does not work.

If anyone out there has a bricked/broken 5500 (with a working screen) laying around just gathering dust I would be happy to buy it for a fee (postage + ) Just send me a msg or contact me at this address: aca@untergrund.net. This way you know at least part of your old 5500 is being made use of by someone who greatly appreciates it!

Jon_J: if you find that link, please post.

regards!

Nokia Tablet / Nokia N810

I think its obvious that Sharpe have totally abandoned the Z. But, really, does the fact that the Z has no "official" commercial support REALLY matter that much? After all, the Commodore Amiga has been commercially dead for over 12 years now. There is virtually no commercial interest/support for the Amiga, yet it has an AMAZING vibrant community full of people still developing for it.

I think the Z will head the same way, it will continue to grow under its own steam and it will retain those users who truly love this unique platform. The Z will go down as a "classic" computer in time and if you take a look around at other, older, "classic" platforms (such as the Amiga, C64, Apple Newton, etc) you realize that there is no fear for the Z's future. Those who love to use their Z's will be able to do so for MANY years to come, despite the lack of commercial support. The Z "community" will keep it alive if it is strong enough (which I feel it is)

All this talk of a "Zaurus replacement" and this apparent manic obsession with OTHER (newer) devices seems to be coming from those people who simply crave the latest and greatest. Which is great, for them. But, personally, I love the Z for its unique design and really do not think any other device (including the N810) could replace the Z.

There is pretty much NO hope for the Z to be a commercial success again, I think. We should just accept that fact and begin to appreciate the Z for what it is and focus on creating our own system of support and development. WE DO NOT NEED COMMERCIAL BACKING TO MAKE OUR Z A SUCCESS!!

Asus Eee PC / Any Eee Pc Owners Here?
« on: March 02, 2008, 06:54:42 am »
I'm waiting for ASUS to add an internal 20+GB HD and slightly higher res screen.

2GB internal storage on a laptop does not make sense to me, but it is just a matter of time before ASUS reel out the "enhanced versions" of the EEE PC. So just have to wait a little longer

Zaurus - pdaXrom / How To Control Mount? (sd/cf/wifi)
« on: February 25, 2008, 12:51:24 pm »

In 2.6.x it is udev that is causing the devices to mount.

check out /etc/udev/rules.d/udev.rules

In there is this a long list of devices that when detected it runs a script.

Hint: Lines 243-244 for block devices (SD/CF)

Late

Hi guys, thanks for the tips. I believe pdaxii13 uses the 2.4.x kernel, and I can't find an /etc/udev/ dir, so i guess it's not that.

Capn_Fish: I tried commenting out ("#") the fstab entries for CF/SD mounting and then rebooting. It didn't seem to stop the cards from being mounted. So I'm guessing it is definitely something "external" to fstab which is controlling the mounts. Another process/daemon. What exactly? I'm not sure...

I will keep searching for a soulution, but if anyone has any other ideas then pls post. thank you!

"linux is the most powerful and flexible OS"...*IF* you can figure out WHERE you need to look to make the changes you want!

Zaurus - pdaXrom / How To Control Mount? (sd/cf/wifi)
« on: February 24, 2008, 04:11:55 pm »
Hi, I'm trying to prevent SD/CF from automatically mounting when I plug them in. I have had a look in fstab but from my limited knowledge it is not obvious exactly how to prevent devices/filesytems from automatically mounting themselves. I assumed the fstab "noauto" mount option would do the trick, but it doesn't appear to prevent auto detect/mount. Perhaps there is some other process included with the pdaXrom distro (seperate from fstab system) which is monitoring interface ports and mounting??? I'm not sure...

for example, I would like to be able to plug my wifi adapter or SD card in but NOT have it automatically mount, so that I can CHOOSE exactly when I need it mounted and so save a little battery power for the moments when they are actually used. At the moment, whenever I plug my wifi card, I have to unmount it with OpenBox's SD/CF/USB monitor plugin (pdaxrom taskbar). I sometimes forget it has been automatically mounted by which time a large portion of my battery has been used unnecessarily!!

I'm a linux noob, but I'm sure if someone points me in the right direction I can figure the rest out. I'm just not sure where to begin.

thank you!

Debian / Battery Draining
« on: February 22, 2008, 12:51:51 pm »
I had major battery drain after installing Tichy. I'm not sure if I overlooked something while installing/configuring but it forced me to uninstall tichy/debian and replace it with PdaXromii13.

I really can't wait until these Zaurus-Debian distros are less generic and incorporate more Zaurus specific configurations (screen rotation, power management, etc) because so far Tichy/Debian has impressed me even more than PdaX.
