Windows Issues / Can\'t get usb net driver to load...
« on: March 30, 2004, 12:52:28 am »
I just got my Z.  After several attempts to get it to sync properly, I finally figured out that I can sync directly from Lotus notes to my networked 5500.  I thought I had to go from Notes -] Qtopia Desktop -] Zaurus (and vice versa).

Anyway, in the process of figuring this out, I must have installed and uninstalled the Windows USB drivers for the Zaurus 15 times.  At some point along the way, Win2k stopped asking about the USB network driver.  And now, no matter what I do, I can\'t get it to install that driver.  Additionally, when I plug the Z into the cradle and turn it on, Win2k pops up the hardware detection routine (which says that it\'s detected an SL-5500), but when I try to tell it to use a particular driver, it won\'t.

The long and short is that somehow I\'ve fubared the driver configuration of Windows.  And I can\'t get it to work anymore.  I\'ve tried uninstalling the drivers using the standard uninstall wizards, etc.  And I\'ve gone into device manager and removed the devices from there.  Any suggestions as to what I should do to get this to work?  I\'m currently syncing using a wired CF network card.  I\'d like to sync over USB net.

Advice?

5x00 Hardware / suggestions for cheapest (!) WiFi card for 5500
« on: March 29, 2004, 02:28:46 pm »
On Friday, I purchased a SanDisk Wifi card from buy.com for $38.51 with free shipping (the price today seems to have gone up $3).  SanDisk says that it\'s \"Low Power\".  I haven\'t read anything about whether or not it works in a zaurus with the sharp ROM, but according to the linux-wlan list it has a prism2 chipset, so I would think it would work.  It arrives tomorrow.  I\'ll report back.

Edit: I found this post  reporting good success using the sandisk wifi card in the sharp roms and OZ.

General Discussion / Removing a partially installed package?
« on: March 28, 2004, 03:57:56 pm »
I\'ve been trying to install opie-mediaplayer2 into OZ 3.3.5, but I keep running into problems.  That package has a large number of dependancies, and pretty much all of them only partially install.  So I\'ve got a huge number of files littered on my SD card.  Is there a way to get rid of them without manually searching for each file?

(I apologize for the barage of n00b questions.  I hope this is the right forum for that)

Thanks in advance.

General Discussion / Package compatibility?
« on: March 28, 2004, 03:45:16 pm »
Is there a general rule of thumb for compatible packages that I can install on OZ 3.3.5?  I\'ve configured /etc/ipkg.conf with:

src testing http://openzaurus.org/official/3.3.5/collie/ipks/

And there are some really good packages available.  But I look at the Zaurus Software Index and I\'d like to try some of those packages.  For example:

http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=179
http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=141

But both of these look like Qtopia apps.  I\'ve even tried to download and run qpsword under OZ.  I can load the reader, but I can\'t load any of the texts for the reader.

I have a bunch of questions.  Is there a primer that I should be looking at to get general answers to these questions?  I\'ve looked for one but couldn\'t find it.  Here are the questions that I have: is there a general rule of thumb for package compatibility?  Which ROM has the most compatible apps?  I have a 5500.   AFAIK, I have three options for ROMS: Sharp, tkcRom and OpenZaurus.  It looks like OZ is the one under most active development.  Are there other ipk feeds that I can use other than just the official OZ feeds?

I wonder if it\'s because I\'m installing bash.  I\'m going to experiment and not install bash to see if this fixes my problems.
Not installing bash seems to have fixed the problem.  I can now reboot and restart opie w/out any trouble.  Time will tell of course.  Maybe I just haven\'t bumped into the problem that I was experiencing.

I suepect the problem is related to this?

Install all of your apps to a storage card (which will probably have to be ext2 unless you have a lot of patience (to make manual symlinks)).

Then before flashing run \'ipkg-link umount /mnt/card\' (for example), and umount the card (it\'s ext2 afterall).

Thanks.  I forgot to mention that I do store all of my apps to a 128MB SD card which is ext2.  Of course one problem is that I can\'t run ipkg-link when I get into the state that I\'m in.  I can\'t even login.

After you\'ve flashed over and restored whatever settings you wanted, stick the card back in and run \'ipkg-link mount /mnt/card\' and all of the apps which you had there will be relinked and available (you may need to restart opie actually, I can\'t remember).

Will this work when I remount the card if I haven\'t done the corresponding \'ipkg-link\' when I umounted it?

Oh, and thanks!

Not sure about your problems though. Sounds like a corrupted ROM image perhaps? My 5500 never caused me troubles (like not being able to find /bin/sh) with 3.3.5.
Yeah, I wonder if it\'s because I\'m installing bash.  I\'m going to experiment and not install bash to see if this fixes my problems.

I bought a used 5500 last week.  I\'ve quickly decided that I was not satisified with the Sharp ROM, so I\'ve moved to OpenZaurus 3.3.5.  But I\'ve been having some troubles.  The question that I have is this: is there some way to make reflashing easier in OZ?  I make backups and when I try to restore one after a reflash, it restores settings and data, but it doesn\'t restore the installed applications.  I have to reinstall them.  So I was wondering if there was an easier way to install the applications so that they can easily recover after a reflash.  Alternatively, is there a way to do a backup that will allow for a restore of the applications, too?

If you\'re curious about why I\'m reflashing so much, I am too.  I\'d appreciate any help with this if you can offer it.  The problem I\'m having is that I\'m using my Z and eventually something will happen where I want to restart opie.  And I\'ll want to restart opie because I can\'t get something to work that I think should work.  For example, this last time I would press & hold the On/Off button, but the Z wouldn\'t turn off.  Instead the \"button\" app would pop up.  I figured maybe opie was confused and needed a restart.  Other examples of problems: lots of base applications crashing with SEGV.

So eventually, I feel like I need to either reboot or restart opie.  What seems to happen is that trying to restart opie or reboot causes it to start up with a black \"OpenZaurus\" screen and a \"(none) login:\" prompt.  If I try to login to that prompt (as either root or user), I get a message back that says (something like) \"could not log you in.  Could not find /bin/sh.\"   Then it brings me back to the \"(none) login:\" prompt.  At that point I have to reflash.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

General Discussion / Complete newbie pros cons list?
« on: March 24, 2004, 10:18:54 pm »
Hello,

I just got my Zaurus today.  SL-5500 off ebay.  Woohoo!

But I am a complete newbie.  I\'m a linux user, and very comfortable with a shell.  But I\'m faced with some choices in the zaurus that I\'d like to get some direction on.  So is there a pros/cons list of the following choices:

OpenZaurus vs. Sharp ROMs?
IntelliSync vs. QtopiaDesktop?

Are there other choices that I\'m not thinking about?

Thanks in advance.

Edit: I should mention that I want/need to sync with Lotus Notes, if that makes any difference.
