Nokia Tablet / The Nokia N800

I am wondering whether we zaurians could tap into the software library of the N800 if we could install a few compatibility libraries - I've given up on extracting a working Skype from the Sony Mylo, but there's one on the Nokia, also there's a google talk app with voice which would be nice.

Alas, if only it were that simple. The Z uses an ARM5 and the N800 uses an ARM6, and the binaries are not compatible  

The N800 doesn't have bash (built-in), and I have already tried to "borrow" bash from the Z, won't even run enough to give a core dump.

I was quite happy with my Z, but I was interested in trying out some of the newer apps for the N800, such as Skype, and Flash9. I had hopes I could get my WiSpy working, but without a Host USB adaptor (which the 770 has) it doesn't look like that is going to happen.

The more I read about it, the less I understand what it is actually good at. An internet tablet with a 4'' with less than 4 Hrs runtime doesn't seems an exceedingly convincing concept to me.

If it had a set of good PIM apps, it would be ok. If it had umts connectivity, it would be ok. If it had a keyboard, it would be ok. Somehow I have the impression that something is missing here.

Having just purchased an N800, I can answer some of the questions. The battery life is getting better. I just went 36 hours with the N800 connected to my WLAN. I wasn't playing with it all of those 36 hours (I did sleep), but anytime I wanted to, I picked it up and did things. I also had a ssh session into the N800 from my latop the entire time.

PIM apps are there in the form of GPE PIM apps. I haven't loaded them all, but the Calendar is nice (not perfect, but neither is the Z's).

I understand, and have seen videos of people connecting to the Internet via their bluetooth phones. But haven't done this myself (data plans are horribly expensive in Canada).

I did buy a Think Outside Bluetooth keyboard, which works quite nicely. I take a lot of notes on my Z and now N800, so a keyboard was a given.

The N800 is far from perfect (there is a problem with it corrupting 8GB SDHC cards right now). But it is a nice upgrade from my SL-6000 (double the RAM, double the flash, Skype, as well as SIP phone, Opera 8.5, and Flash 9, and the ability to take 2 SDHC cards).

No I haven't. But then as I mentioned earlier, I am enjoying my new little box (the Nokia N800). It isn't perfect, but they are doing something right with the battery. Mine has been connected to my WLAN for 36 hours straight on battery. Can't do that on the Z.

Now if I could just get those really useful Qt apps I have gotten used to over the years (like Zplayer, and Zeditor) to run on the N800.

6000 - Tosa / Sd Limit

It goes without saying that the PNY SD 2Gb card I got today didn't work... Has anyone seen or better yet tried this:

I do not know enough of the SD standard or about how the Z handles the SD slot to say if it is real or not.

Opinion/experience anyone?

Sorry to take so long to reply to this thread. I just decided to go ahead an order the card, and if it didn't work on the Zaurus, I'd use it elsewhere (like my camera).

The sad news is that it _DOES NOT_ work in the SL-6000 as advertised. Dmesgs reports many block errors, and even as VFAT (which is the default format of the card) it doesn't mount.

Sadly, it looks like through the SD slot, 1GB is the limit with the stock Sharp ROM. I do have a SD to CF adaptor and that accepts SD cards bigger than 1GB, but then that kind of defeats what a lot of us wanted which was stationary storage (a card that would stay with the unit).

On a vastly different note, I have also just bought a Nokia N800 ,which supports 8GB in the SD slot (and it does work). I have been looking for a linux-based replacement for my trusty Z. And although the Nokia takes some getting used to (it isn't QT based, and the binaries such as tcpdump) don't work on the N800. It has quite a few nice features. I'll write a review/info/comparison later.

Sorry about the 2GB SD card, though....

Accessories / Does The New Stowaway Ir Keyboard Work?

I've received the  keyboard, and the keyboard works!   but not with the Targus driver. 

I would be very interested in trying the keyboard as well. I'm using a 6k with the Sharp ROM installed. It's definitely a sleek looking device...

I too would be interested (for the sharp rom). I have a Belkin F8U1500, which works with a "newer" version of IRK (http://www.geocities.jp/bakkeo2004/), but I don't see the stowaway as one of the keyboards listed.

6000 - Tosa / Keyboards?

To pick up on an old thread.

I am using a Belkin F8U1500T with my SL-6000L. I am using an "updated" version of Craig's IRK driver (from: http://www.geocities.jp/bakkeo2004/) And everything works (almost).

What I can't get working is the QCOP commands (which can be mapped under command keys). In theory, one should be able to map a command like: "QPE/System:setBacklight(int):0"

This would turn off the backlight when the key is pressed. This worked with my old Pocketop keyboard (using an older verions of IRK), but doesn't work with this version which I need to support the Belkin keyboard.

Anyone have any ideas on how to get QCOP commands to work with this version of IRK (or another one supporting the F8U1500T)?

I have heard (on these forums) that if you format the SD card with the command:
mke2fs -T news /dev/mmcda1

So I have had a chance to try this, and it doesn't work  Seems to be a driver thing (read: a closed source driver). I did pick up a SD to CF adaptor

Thanks Barry. Unfortunately, it is a no go. Meanie mentioned that PDAXrom uses a 2.6 kernel, and that is why it is working for you. I am not quite ready to give up my QT just yet. So I'll have to continue using my WiSpy on my linux laptop.

X/Qt / Wi-spy And X/qt

Okay, got it working!!!  I emailed wgabsd a question, he replied and that gave me the bump in the direction I needed.  Only problem I have now is I don't know how to make an ipkg of it....  I also don't know if it will run in X/Qt.  I've got it running in pdax.  Here's the c file that I changed.

Yes, I was hoping for a service manual, which doesn't come on the CD that ships w/the 6K as all those other ones in this thread do.

Yes, I am looking for a Hardware oriented service manual as well. I'd like to replace the backup battery in my SL-6000 (Qtopia is always telling me it is dead, kind of annoying).

I'd never thought about this with the 6k.  Is there a 1gb limit in addressing SD cards?  I've tried both of my 2gb cards and it won't mount either of them - at least not with the default settings in fstab anyway (haven't really dug in to the issue yet). 

Before I bang that flat spot on my forehead - is there a 1gb limit?  If not I'll go about figuring out why these cards won't mount.

If they could release this in clamshell form with a larger internal flash drive (4GB+) and an ARM11 CPU then we will have our Zaurus successor. These hi-res screens are great but they get scratched so easily without the protection the clamshell design brings. The clamshell design also brings the ability to adjust the angle of the screen. A potentially fantastic machine wasted on a trite excuse for an OS and form factor

Perhaps I just need to get my hands on a clam shell to see the benefits. I own a SL-5500 and a SL-6000, and I love them. I use an IR keyboard and can touch type. The clam shell (pick any of them) keyboards look too small to touch type. And if they are, I don't see the point. (yes the SL series have a thumb keyboard, and it is S-L-O-W).

Anyone live in Ottawa (Canada) who will let me touch (and hold) their wonderful clam shell Zaurus?

Software / Text Editor For Pdax With Complex Search?

I thought I saw nedit compiled for PdaXrom.  nedit supports regular expression search and replace.  It's very competent and fast running on a desktop... probably a little slower on a Z, but it should do what you want.

Nedit is pretty slick, I even use it in Xqt (don't have PDAX, sorry). But if you have a bunch of files, you might try sed and a short bash script. Using the sed command with something like
sed  -e 's/\n//g' filename > new_filename

Or you could put that into a bash loop like this:

sed  -e 's/\n//g' $f >  ${f%%.txt}.text
}That would rip out all the returns in every txt file in the directory, creating a new set of files ending in text. Once you are happy with the conversion, you can delete all the txt files.
