Accessories / SD vs CF flash cards?
« on: May 08, 2004, 04:16:32 pm »
A lot of SD cards won\'t work with the Zaurus (or the Dell Axim or the Tungsten T3 or etc.). Worse, it isn\'t really possible to tell ahead of time which cards will and won\'t work - with the possible exception of that the ones which have been manufactured in Japan seem to work consistently. But you usually can\'t tell if the card was made in Japan until after you\'ve bought it, opened the package, and looked at the back of the chip. For gory details, see: http://sdprob.aximsite.com/. There\'s a list at http://sdprob.aximsite.com/theproblemlist.htm which might give you an idea of which models are and aren\'t flakey. SanDisk cards are particularly bad.

Does anyone know if this is still an issue with recently manufactured Zauri?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / OZ 3.3.5 with CF card as root directory?
« on: May 08, 2004, 02:44:43 pm »
Has anyone been able to pivot the root directory to the CF card while booting OZ? The instructions in OZ faq #192, \"How can I run my Zaurus entirely off of the SD card?\" (http://www.openzaurus.org/oz_website/faq/faq?id=192) states that they\'ll also work with a CF card, but I haven\'t been able to adapt them in any way such that my Zaurus will do this.

If I boot the Z up from the internal flash memory, after Qtopia is running, I can run pivot_root successfully (though, of course, the machine crashes shortly thereafter because it loses a bunch of stuff it set up during boot after the pivot).

My setup: SL-5500, OZ 3.3.5 (64/0), SanDisk 256MB CF card (formatted as ext2 with a whole directory hierarchy on it)

Software / font in console mode
« on: May 04, 2004, 08:46:53 pm »
Recompile kernel: yuck. Sigh.

So the loadfont command won\'t change the console-mode font? Is it there because it\'s part of BusyBox, but the Z just doesn\'t use it? Or does it do something else?

thanks,

Software / font in console mode

Is it possible to change the font used when a Zaurus (SL-5500, Sharp ROM 3.10) is running in console mode? The default font uses letters which are somewhat large.

The handwriting recognition has an incomplete Latin 1 character set; namely, it\'s missing the letters þ and ð. Is there any way to add them?

Software / messed up Z\'s config, Japanese IM always on
« on: April 10, 2004, 08:18:10 pm »
Beh! My previous post contained unfriendly non-characters which seem to have not uploaded properly. So I\'ll skip the gory details this time. I did this:

# cd /home/zaurus/Settings
# rm fepgaku.ja fepmode.ja.conf

and then rebooted. Afterwards the troublesome inline Japanese IM went away allowing me to once again type latin characters.

I fixed it.

I think the problem was with CRIM, and I think the files fepgaku.ja and/or fepmode.ja.conf might be the configuration files for it (fep: front-end processor (for latin to japanese character conversion)).

fepgaku.ja was an empty file and fepmode.ja.conf had the following contents:

I did something to my SL5500\'s setup last night which caused a Japanese inline input method to  always be used for some apps, like the Qtopia PIM apps and Zeditor, but not others, like Hancom.

Oddly, all the resulting characters display as (red) squares, even though I uninstalled all the fonts except unifont and unismall.

I\'m using the Sharp 3.10 ROM, and I have CRIM from the A300 ROM installed. Could CRIM be the culprit? It used to only activate when I selected it as the input method, and even then only as a bottom-line IM, not inline.

Does anyone have any idea what I did and how I might undo it?

thanks,

Patrick

Software / IMKit-Anthy font?
« on: April 05, 2004, 07:01:30 pm »
I tried installing the fonts from the C760 Sash/Cacko rom. As I originally mentioned, I\'m using Sharp\'s 3.10 rom. Here are my results:

The mmkjg* fonts look identical to unifont and monafont. There are five of them (mmkjg1* - mmkjg5*), and I couldn\'t figure out what the difference among them is.

The jsupasp* fonts are invisible! They also become the default font for the CRIM input method so you can\'t see what you\'re writing.

The lcfont* fonts cause Qtopia to be unable to start up.

Sigh. Oh well....

Software / IMKit-Anthy font?

As a partial answer to my own question, I do now have Kanji and Kana displaying, though it cost me most of my fonts.

what I did:

first I installed the unifont and unismall packages. Then:

# cd /home/QtPalmtop/lib
# cp -a fonts fonts.old        # so I\'d have a backup
# cd fonts
# rm fixed* helv* sm* fontdir

then I made a new fontdir file with the following contents:

unifont unismall.bdf BDF n 50 100 u
unifont unifont.bdf BDF n 50 160 u
micro micro.bdf BDF n 50 40

then I rebooted, and the Japanese characters started showing up in the apps I was complaining about in my previous message.

If anyone has any idea of how to get Japanese to display while still keeping all my fonts, please let me know!

Software / IMKit-Anthy font?
« on: April 01, 2004, 09:49:54 pm »
Can anyone clue me in as to what font to use to get kanji and kana to display with IMKit-Anthny, CRIM (the handwriting recognition from the A300\'s ROM), and ZEditor? I have the unifont package installed, and it works with Opera, but with the above-mentioned, I get squares instead of kanji or kana.

I have an SL-5500 with version 3.10 of Sharp\'s ROM.

thanks,

PCH
