General Discussion / touchscreen error
« on: July 13, 2004, 04:08:17 pm »
Not sure if this will help you out but I also have an SL-5500 that experiences erratic registering of screen taps from time to time.  I had even gone into a sketchpad screen to see just what it was registering and a tap towards the center of the screen would result in a jagged line off to the right.   And, some parts of the screen would register correctly.

What I learned over time is that this problem was worse when the battery appeared to be low.  Whenever I see this problem arise I just shut down the Z and let is charge for a couple hours, etc.  Most of the time that fixes the problem.

I also have trouble with the touchpad settings application.  Sometimes I end up chasing the darn crosshairs round and round with the Z never seeming to like what I'm trying to do.  I've also found this is at least aggravated by low battery power.

I've since switched to the tkc2A3 rom and I run /home on SD.  So, if the situation gets really nasty I just do a hard reset.  That has always fixed the issue.

Good luck and I'm interested in seeing if others have a better insight into this.

Sharp ROMs / ROM Recommendation?
« on: July 03, 2004, 08:08:46 am »
For a very stable, dependable ROM check out TKC.  I have a 5500 and have been running it for a few months without ANY incident.  Some of the functionality you are looking for will need to be added in via IPKG.

I've tried OZ/Opie and agree with padishah_emperor...it is a neat concept but unless you really are technical (not to mention patient) it would probably be too unstable for what you have stated.  That is not to say it won't support the few applications you state, it merely means that you'll most likely have to spend more time getting them set just right.

I actually preferred OZ/Opie as I liked the "bleeding edge" attitude.  However, I found that 90% of my use for the Z was as a PIM.  So, I reverted to TKC for stability.

Good luck...and try them all out.  That ultimately is the beauty of the Z.  You're not locked into any one approach.

Software / Syncing Kopi
« on: May 18, 2004, 04:52:05 pm »
I\'m running the latest tkcROM along with the latest KO/PI offering.  Syncing is a two step process.  I first sync Windows to the Sharp PIM database by using Intellisync as if I didn\'t even have KO/PI.  I then sync KO/PI with the Sharp DTM database using the synchronization menu item in KO/PI.

I\'ve had nary a doubled up entry, etc. and I do modify items in both directions.  The additional step of syncing KO/PI with the Sharp DTM data takes all of about 8 seconds and has worked flawlessly.

Not sure if this helps you or not keep trying as KO/PI is a far better application then the standard Sharp PIM stuff...just make sure you have the latest KO/PI release running on your Zaurus (should be 1.7.x).

Zautrix -

Took your recommendations and all seems to be working okay.  Thanks.

I\'m using Zautrix\'s excellent KO/PI at this point for my calendar and todo manager.  But, now, whenever I get an alarm I get notified by both KO/PI and the Sharp Calendar app.  I could disable the KO/PI alarm but then what\'s the use of using KO/PI?  I\'d rather disable the alarm for the app I\'m not really using other than as a conduit to KO/PI.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  TIA.

Are there any plans for a plug-in for the Sharp DTM-style addressbook?  I\'m using KO/PI religiously now for my todo/event manager and the sync functionality has worked flawlessly.  Just wish I had access to the contacts in the addressbook.  Keep up the good work, Zautrix!

General Discussion / Advice on where to go from the SL-5500
« on: April 10, 2004, 02:16:33 pm »
I\'m probably going to answer my own question but I currently have an SL-5500.  I\'m running the current Sharp ROM.  I have a wireless network at home and do have wireless CF card,  but I seldom if ever use my Z for connecting to the Net as I have a laptop that is much more user and ergonomically  friendly.  I really use my Z as an organizer for the most part synching with Outlook 2000.  I also use QashMoney for recording checkbook activity, etc.  I toy around with Python, Linux, etc. but am by no mean proficient in any of these disciplines.  All in all, my Z does what I need it to do.  I can\'t say I\'m unhappy with how it serves me currently.

In spite of that though I feel like I\'m running archaic hardware what with the SL-6000, C-series etc. being available.

I\'d be interested in the advice of others regarding ROMs and/or hardware platforms.
