General Discussion / Revenge of help the Noob - how do I force quit?
« on: April 21, 2004, 05:10:42 pm »
Heh, ok thanks guys, but I\'m talking situations where the GUI is totally hosified (and I\'m not networked with my Z). I was wondering if there was some kinda Vulcan death pinch. Heck even a restart combo would be nice as the BRS is software controlled and I\'ve gotten it quite a few times into a state where I have to pull the battery before restarting...

If I have an application that wedges the GUI, what can I do to force quit it? Barring that is there a way to jump to a terminal prompt so I can manually quit it?

Ok, gosh durn it!

1) I put the dang files in /mnt/card/Documents/Install_Files
2) The installer finds nothing
3) I goto the terminal and try to gunzip them, and get an error - \"not a gzip file\"
4) I double check on my Mac than indeed it won\'t ungzip
5) Niether my Zaurus or my Mac has ar installed, so I can\'t confirm that these are indeed Opie packages...

Question - can anybody point me to a totally safe ipk that would install on an ancient SHARP ROM?

Alternatively - can anybody confirm that the latest Sharp ROM I can install on my C700 is 2.12 and that I shoudl try that before mucking about any further?

Thanks again!

Thanks guys, that clarifies a lot!

Many of the online docs and posts talk about using a new \"ROM\" to update the OS. Therefore these ROMs could either be:
- replacements of the higher level OS modules (like the window manager) and what are usually seen on the PC as the installed applications (web browser, etc).
- the above plus kernel replacement which improves the very lowest level functionality of the system.

Is that about right?

Doh! Thanks, catachresis - that\'s a good idea. I searched the FAQ, but it\'s much more likely there are answers on the boards themselves!

Hi all, I just recently recieved a C700 as a gift. It came with a power supply and nothing else. I\'ve managed to switch the language to English, but it\'s a really old setup. The ROM says it\'s version 1.00 JP.

The battery seems to run only for a very short time - only a single day. Is this normal? Is this because the unit is so old / used? Is there a way to recondition the battery? Should I buy a new battery?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Hi all, I just recently recieved a C700 as a gift. It came with a power supply and nothing else. I\'ve managed to switch the language to English, but it\'s a really old setup. The ROM says it\'s version 1.00 JP. The Kernel says it\'s 2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3-embedix.

I see a lot of talk about different ROMs and different Kernels, but being totally ignorant I\'m a touch lost. Is the ROM an installation which includes the Kernel? It seems I can patch the Kernel without installing a new ROM - is that right?

I\'m very interested in any sytem upgrades that would improve performance and allow me to use the pressure sensitivity feature in paint programs. What\'s the easiest way to get such a system upgrade? Is there a single ROM I can just flash and have it all get installed at once?

Which ROM should I choose for maximumn compatibility with exsisting apps?

Actually I\'m only interested in painting and multimedia playback on the Zaurus (I\'ll just use my Sidekick for text editing, email, web browsing etc.). I\'d love to just run a paint program and a MP3 and a video player on the Zaurus - which ROM would be best suited for that?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

I can\'t install any packages! I downloaded a bunch of .ipk files from http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus and put them on a CF card. When I put the card in my Zaurus they show up as package icons - I click on them and the package installer says it\'s looking for packages, but then comes up with an empy list.

Am I doing something wrong? Is my system just too out of date? Any advice would be much appreciated!
