Accessories / Portable speaker recommendation???
« on: April 26, 2004, 11:14:26 am »
what you\'re probably looking for are the Infaltable speakers: http://www.paramountzone.com/speakers.htm
Compact for travelling and as they use the whole surface of the inflated speaker they produce a loud and rich sound. At least that\'s what it says in theb blurb :-)
Haven\'t tried them myself but they sound like the sort of thing you\'re after.
Also I\'m sure I\'ve seen battery powered ones somewhere (not the ones on link above) have alook on gadget sites.

This link goes to inflatable speakers with battery or mains - pretty much exactly what you\'re after.
And if you\'re in the us you should be able to find the same thing cheaper :-)

Hmm I just plug the zaurus in start the music up and shove it and all the wires into the glove box. Works a treat and nothing obvious to nick if anyone looks through the window :-)
Bought a cheap generic cigarette lighter psu that works great, I get my music and my zaurus arrives fully charged on long journeys.

General Discussion / Self importing/buying while in japan 860

As far as vat and warranty goes - don\'t worry about it. Vat is charged by governments (\'cause lets face it they don\'t take enough of your money already right :-) The warranty is with the company who made the device. No problem or conflict of interests. And yep I was working on the assumption that import vat would be avoided - one way or another :-)

Right let\'s add this up. I\'m assuming I know someone going to japan in the next couple of months (hmm what about singapore ?) so I get them to get me an 860 (£340). I then flog my zaurus 5500 for £150 on ebay (probably get more, but it\'s had some use and I\'m keeping my 256mb flash and 128sd cards but it does have spare battery :-).
I spend an afternoon reading up on roms and flashing the 860 rom myself. Viola I\'ve got an 860 for total cost of: £190 ($332)
Makes you think doesn\'t it :-)

Decided to check out amazons japan site. They sell the 860 for 65,951 yen which works out at around £340 or $602
Now bear in mind that imported 860\'s sell for £565 from shirtpocket.co.uk
And I\'ve seen imported 860s on a us website for $699 (approx £400).
Okay so the english one does the rom conversion for you (pretty sure this wouldn\'t be a problem after browsing this website :-)
In short shirtpocket are really taking the piss. £225 ($393) for importing and flashing rom and warranty.
It\'s actually cheaper for me to get a budget flight to the us and buy an imported 860 from the states, and that can\'t be right can it :-)

Anyone got any idea of the actual price of the c860 on the ground in japan ?
The imported versions are just too expensive as I don\'t actually need one :-) (my 5500 is fine). But I would like a bigger keyboard again (after 13 years and 100,000s of words of being spoilt with my hp 95lx keyboard, the 5500 is a major downer and I can\'t be doing with external keyboards as I tend to type away from tables).
To be honest if I were going to spend £500 plus on a clamshell pc it\'d have to be a cheap laptop.
BUT if you can buy the 860 in japan for a sensible price and I\'m not overly fussed about the warranty, then I\'d seriously consider it.
Someone I know is bound to go to japan in the near future :-)
So anyone got any ideas ?

sounds like your cf card has died. I have a similiar problem with a generic prism2.5 cf card. Worked great then died. Light flashes but nobody home. Check your networks tab and see if the signal status changes at all (mine\'s stuck on 53%).
And change to the 3.10 rom :-) faster and so much better.

Accessories / Superb Handmade Leather Cases for Zaurus SL-5500
« on: April 22, 2004, 09:16:40 am »
be interested to know which gba case you\'re using wolfman as I own several (cases only one gba) and none of them would be suitable for my 5500 (course the \'temporary\' replacement plastic palm stylus sticking out the top doesn\'t help) but even without that I can\'t comfortably fit my zaurus into a gba case.
Also my zaurus is permanently attached to my belt, so any case would need a belt loop and an opening that doesn\'t dump the zaurus on the floor if you forget to close the case. My current case saw many years service with my hp95lx (gone to the great chip heap in the sky and still lamented) before being home to my zaurus and it\'s pretty much falling apart.
Just looked at the cases on anokhi and they would be totally unsuitable for me. What they are is a protective covering not a true case. Surely ease of removal and not having to remember where the damn thing is has to be important - particularly if you use your zaurus as much as I do. Something that wraps round the zaurus and therefore needs something else to carry it in is of little or no use. Unless anyone can say otherwise ?

Hmm, translation doesn\'t seem to do much of anything. But the picture looks amazingly like a 7500 attached to monitor, keyboard and mouse, now if it is and if it ever gets packaged as a commercial venture, then - cor !
Your zaurus becomes your desktop :-)
All it needs is support for an external usb harddrive with an alternate os (ie win98se or desktop linux) that supports printers and waheey :-)

5x00 General discussions / Should I buy a 5500?
« on: April 22, 2004, 08:51:08 am »
Snap the guys arm off !
Hell I\'d buy it for spares :-)
Web browsing on opera on the zaurus is great, easy and yes it does automatically scan and detect available networks and knowlege of linux is completely unnecessary (haven\'t got a clue myself but yet to find anything I can\'t do on the zaurus - except install opie mediaplayer 2).
It does depend to large extent on just how small minded and nitpicking an individual you are (no insult intended). If you\'re one of those people who can\'t handle a touchpad or bear to look at a screen at less than 800x600 res. Then you probably don\'t want a pda at all. If you\'re prepared to try something new you\'ll be more than pleasantly surprised at just how good the net can be on such a small device.
I also concur that about 1-1 1/2 hours battery life is about right for active web browsing - though I tend to mainly use my screen on half power brightness and that really helps :-)

Accessories / Mercury nl-2511 CF Wifi card and my 5500
« on: April 20, 2004, 10:56:51 am »
Used to have a prism 2.5 based wifi card (really cheap one from ebay with blue label) That worked extremely well. Plugged and played out of the box,  had no problems with my home network.
And then it died :-(. Not sure quite what happened but it flat out died while I was using aol aim from the net. Now it just shows 53% connection whether you\'re within a mile of wifi or not - plus the access point has reset to something really weird (44:44:44:44:44:44).
So it\'s dead, no problem, I bought a new one.
Now I\'ve got a pink card that is probably using the prism 3.0 chipset (from what I can find on the net).
I\'m on my second pink card and and neither one has talked to my zaurus in any shape or form. No flashing lights, no cf symbol in the taskbar nada, zero, zilch, nothing to even indicate there is a cf card (let alone a network card) plugged in.
The guy on ebay I bought the pink card from deserves a mention (bluetech) as he\'s being very helpful, changed the card over with no hassle or extra postage and is willing to exchange for an older 2.5 prism blue card if I can\'t get any joy out of this one.
I\'m guessing I need drivers, though can find none listed anywhere.
Does anyone have any USEFUL (lol) suggestions ?
I\'d like to try and get the new card running as the performance is theoretically much better (ie: surf the net in the garden with my feet up and a beer in my other hand).
Anyone else bought one of these new pink mercury cards ?

and if so did it work ?
I\'ve got a 5500 with the sharp 3.10 rom
ps. anyone managed to install the opie mrdiaplayer 2.0 on the 3.10 rom and if so how ?????????
Cheers
