For Sale / Wanted / C3k For Sale With Extras
« on: February 01, 2006, 09:59:40 am »
I may have mis-judged the value of a C3K with the extras noted.  If you're interested in the kit at a different price (lower or higher  ) send me your offer.

I'll also take offers on the individuals extras.  I already have an offer on the BT card.  The available items, then, are the C3K itself, the wifi card and the spare battery.

For Sale / Wanted / C3k For Sale With Extras
« on: January 30, 2006, 10:38:32 pm »
I'm selling my C3K with following:
Original box, manuals, CD, charger, stylus, etc.
Ambicom WL1100C-CF (Prism chipset)
Socket BT (Rev G) including PCMCIA adapter and leatherett case
Extra EA BL08 battery (not the 1800 mAh 'A' revision but the original 1700 mAh -- bought new Nov '05, never used -- just didn't need it ;-)

The unit is in excellent condition.  No scratches on screen.  No dents, dings or other damage.  I'm very protective of my gear.  One note, though: on every C3* series I've seen the chrome get's light scratches just under the pads that 'protect' the chrome from the bottom edge of the screen.  Mine has those.  They polish away with chrome cleaner but re-appear after a few days use so I don't bother about them.

For those curious about the Rev G Socket BT.  It works fine with the Cacko beta.  The only issue is sleep/resume.  I usually have to eject and re-insert the card to get it to work again.  I've seen a couple of scripts in the forums to address the issue but since BT isn't my main connectivity method it didn't really bother me.  The Ambicom is just perfect -- sleep/resume it just works beautifully with every ROM I've tried.

The C3100 is US$589 delivered to the US.  My C3k is nearly a year old but has some valuable goodies in terms of the wifi, bt and spare battery.  I'll sell it for US$550 exclusive of shipping & duty (for those outside the US).  I'm opening this to the ZUG first.

Currently the unit has OZ 3.5.3.  I can flash it back to Sharp or just about any other ROM before shipping or leave it as is.

Disclosure: I fully disassembled the Z and posted the pictures on my website.  http://www.hypernote.com/gallery if you want to see them.  I'm pretty meticulous about my work.  I didn't mod or damage internals of the unit, just wanted to see the insides.

Cheers,

Aaron

P.S.  Anyone intersted in a Nikon D100 with external flash in excellent condition?

Can you try it again?  I just hit it from home and it worked fine.  Email or PM me if you're still having troubles hitting it.

5x00 General discussions / Mp3 Downloads
« on: September 24, 2005, 09:54:19 pm »
Don't forget places like Magnatunes.  Magnatunes represents mostly indie bands.  The music selection varies in quality but you get to preview everything you buy.  I've had good luck with the jazz, classical and "world" music genres.  The rock and pop are uneven.

The prices at magnatunes are right -- you pay what you think it's worth with a suggested price of US$8.00 of which the artist gets a full 50%.  Even cooler, you pick the format(s) you want -- you can download just an mp3 copy or you can get wavs and say flac or ogg.  There doesn't seem to be a limit to the number of formats.  I tend to pull down the flac and re-encode to save them bandwidth but the option is there.  Also, you can go back and re-download.  It's not like the iTunes Music Store where you get one shot at the download.  They also let you listen to almost the whole catalog in streaming format as mp3 radio.  They've also just announced that you can give any album you buy to 3 of your friends.  John Buckman, who started magnatunes, has a really refreshing philosophy to music -- very compatible with the Free Software movement.

There are also other places.  Michael Robertson who started mp3.com started a new one called mp3tunes.com.  Seems to be pretty much the same artists from mp3.com.  Again, the quality of the music varies.  The prices are pretty much in line with the "majors" like iTMS but unlike magnatunes you only get one format -- mp3.  Also, the previews are snippets whereas those on magnatunes are full length.  On the whole, I have a hard time getting excited about mp3tunes because you pay $8.88 for an album in a lossy format.

I haven't tried allofmp3.com but have walked their catalog.  It's very nice and complete.  I think I'd use it as suggested -- for marginal interest items.  Anything I like I buy as a CD and just rip/encode to disk.

Hardware Mods / Upgrading Your C*k

I have been pulling appart my PDA and studying the insides to see what type of upgrades are posible, i thoght it would be a good idea to put them all in the one place as well as give you some more info on how easy they are to do.

<snip>

This is just a list of what we might be able to do, if you are intrested in technical details get in touch but keep in mind that none have been achived yet. also feature listed here may be imposible to implement but i have made estimates of what can be done. i am also intrested in what you would like to see as that will influence what i work on, i dont expect to see more than 2 finished by the end of this year unless i am lucky or some one else works on one.

Great list.  I'm interested in the RAM & NAND upgrades and internal bluetooth hack.

I did some calling around and found a place here in the US that will do BGA removal, reballing and mounting.  Without seeing the board or replacement components he could only approximate the price but thinks about $45 to do the RAM (not sure whether that's for the whole job or per chip).  I'm going to package up some of the pictures I posted and send them to him along with the datasheets on the memory to get a firmer quote.  I've "read" the pictures on the Japanese website where the C700 RAM upgrade was documented.  The job required making a couple of additional connections.  Any idea whether this job would?  I don't mind doing surface attachments myself but need some help sussing it out.  Anyone have any idea whether this upgrade can be done with simple chip replacements, or will it take some additional soldering?  What about kernel mods?

I'll do some research to find it, but if anyone has a link to the datasheets for the replacement RAM close by I can get an email off today.

Thanks,

Aaron

Hardware Mods / Stuffing Serial Bluetooth Module Inside C1k Casing

i am also intrested in high res photos of any of the c3x00 or c1k, i am sure i saw one where they removed the chip (or was that a c700). the pxa270 also has a bluetooth serial port that can go up to just under 1Mb/s, i also belive it had a 64 byte buffer instead of the 32 byte one but i cant find any info in the pdf's to prove/disprove this
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

You may already have seen the [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=15043]photos[/url] I published in this forum topic.  Let me know if you need more detail.  I can magnify and crop any specific chip or section of the C3k motherboard I took pictures of.  Cowardly, I did not desolder any of the chips from the board.

C1000/3x00 Hardware / Photos Of The C3k Disassembled

I've posted photos of my C3k as I took it apart a while back.  I've finally moved the project from back burner to fully baked.  With all the good discussions going on about hardware mods it seemed like a good time to post them.

I've posted two albums.  The first is a series of images and (some) stepwise instructions for dissassembling the C3k.

The second gallery is a series of close-up shots of the motherboard.  I tried to capture every part of the motherboard, front and back, to give hardware hackers a quick reference to the C3k without having to open their Z every other day.  To that end I've erred on the side of brightening and extra sharpening.  If any of the images are hard to use, let me know.  I have the originals and can either post a new one with different adjustments, or really blow one up.  At the time I wasn't in the mood to tear apart the LCD.  If the need arises I may tackle that next.

The images are released under a Creative Commons license for non-commercial use.  Feel free to pull them down local or mirror them.

I've just received my renewed C700 from Maslovsky  Not it has a new PXA255 CPU and 128 MB RAM onboard. I will try to solder BT module to FFUART again.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=96045\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Is that 128 RAM, or storage space?  Is there a thread somewhere describing/discussing the process?

Cheers!

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Cacko3k Feedback
« on: September 15, 2005, 11:40:29 pm »
I loaded Cacko 3k beta 1 a couple of days ago.  Works great, less filling!

Seriously, install was smooth.  All the applications work very well.  My Socket BT Rev G is working, though with fits described below.  Also, the 'N' icon in the task bar is always on.  I'm sure I've seen somewhere how to turn it off but can't remember for the life of me where.

I have noticed a couple of issues with BT.  When I first insert the card the tray icon to connect doesn't appear.  I have to enter the Networking application and make my first connection from there.  Also, I can't save changes to the speed pull down in the modem tab.  The latter probably isn't Cacko related but I mention if someone has some ideas how to fix it.  I haven't paid any attention yet to suspend/resume to see how that's working.

Sometime in the next few days I'll try Pocket Debian and load a few more apps.

whatever became of the 3100 having an FCC ID?
some of us anticipated it being sold outside of Japan!
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=94672\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I can't see Sharp putting the 4" screen into a clamshell.  That extra 3/10ths of an inch diagonal adds more than you'd think to the vertical and horizontal size of the screen.  I owned a 6k and while I marvelled at the screen for its clarity, brightness and TFT goodness, I couldn't get over how wide the PDA was compared to my C3k.  I could place the 6k over the 3k and it pretty much covered the whole thing up.  The clamshells would cease to be pocket workstations with the 4" screen.  They'd be 'holster workstations' and you wouldn't be able to clasp your hand comfortably around the device (perhaps hand-size in Asia is alreay driving the decision.)

What's really made me appreciate my C3k is owning a Palm Treo.  I bought it thinking it would be the perfect convergence device -- phone, PDA, internet.  The screen is a beautiful 320x320 but it's like 2.5" square.  All of a sudden the C3k screen seems really roomy, not to mention better dimensions for movies.  The always-on connectivity is sweet, especially Verizon's email sync utility but the limitations, lack of OS stability and small(er than Linux) Free (as in speech and beer) software selection has me rethinking the whole thing.  (I might mention that while the keyboard looks cramped on a Treo, the keyspacing works better for me.  Only needs the fifth row of keys.  Sharp could decrease the keyspacing on the clamshells and make me much happier.)  Add a bluetooth-enabled phone that can access Verizon's EVO network (like the Motorola E815) and I think I might have hit urban-connectivity nirvana.

The overall point, for me anyway, is that the clamshell screens are about the correct size.  Add more solid state storage, more RAM and bluetooth and I'm happy.  Bonus would be to use more of the clamshell lid to make the screen a bit wider.  I don't really want built-in wifi anymore now that I've seen a 54G CF-card at Fry's.  Nice to know I can upgrade when I'm ready.
