C1000/3x00 Hardware / C1000 And Angstrom ? Forget It !
« on: May 13, 2009, 08:57:39 am »
Hmmm, a completely uncalled for attack. I notice you don't actually describe your problems. I have seen no bug reports or emails to the Angstrom mailing lists.

I'm going to guess the problem is PEBCAK

Zaurus - pdaXrom / What's The Best Choice While Waiting For Pdaxrom 2?

I think the rxxx releases have been stable enough for me and only have some minor quirks, many of which are fixed by installing the service pack. Just about everything (No BVDD) works, and it doesn't crash for me, but YMMV.

Steal the patches from http://www.openembedded.org/filebrowser/or...s/mplayer/files for vo_pxa and you will have BVDD type functionality back on 2.6 kernel.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Sound Quality On R198

So you actually have a working EQ and 3d sound (with manual control --sliders or something- of sound settings)on both an 860 and a 3200 using Angstrom(2.6), and you can play back audio on it?  And this is from simply buidling and installing?

Yes, on the C3200, I havent tested C860 recently

You have to use alsamixer for the complex stuff, but it works. Out of the box the 3200 running angstrom will play audio from speaker. If you plug in headphones it will switch to headphones. I am doing this as I write this :-)

Which raises the question-- has anyone actually got this driver running on a 2.6 based (Zaurus) system that plays audio?
..and other than the vaderish "power of the codec" bit, isn't the 2.4 driver (the new one that includes the wolfson stuff) from the same people for the same hardware? Wouldn't they sound the same (assuming both were working)?

Well it works for me on c3200 and c860 devices.

2.4 driver should sound the same as long as it sets the hardware up correctly. Wolfson don't support 2.4 kernel so we were only working on 2.6 in my time there.

All I can figure is people are pulling random bits from here and there and not really understanding what they are doing. If your going to borrow stuff from OE then if you borrow everything stuff should just work. At least for basic sound playback. It is certainly working on Angstrom build from 3pm today on a C3200 device.

Debian / Sound On Titchylinux

Thanks for the plain and straightforward explanation. So the way to go is to have Oabi kernel and Oabi rootfs or Eabi kernel and Eabi rootfs. There are several routes that can be followed to either of those two goals.

Which route to follow?? Either will require me to learn a lot more about linux, kernels, modules and developing.  All to the good!

Thanks again for the input.

Well if you have time, then you can always use make-kpkg on zaurus under debian to build either OABI or EABI kernels just by change the .config. The packages/linux/linux.inc will show you how. Once youve built packages they work just like
any other debian packages.

Just to add to this thread.

The reason you will have problems with sound on an OABI rootfs with Angstrom kernel is because ALSA doesnt contain the right magic to allow both ABI to function at same time. The rest of the kernel does and this is why everything else works
fine.

I found this out about a year ago when I was working for Wolfson :-)

Nice, a link to the toolchain is always the quickest way to see a port. I'll get on it!
I am still timid about releasing the source, as I'm still unaware if I can release the GPU's source, as well as the SPU. The project got mismanaged a bit and things are confusing in that dept.
In the meantime I'll get a port up and going for you.

I'm also a gp2x owner so Ive been following progress on those forums as well, so Ive seen your posts about these problems. All is cool though, one step at a time. I'm not one of the open source guys that demands source for everything I run :-)

Worst case for distant future, make libgpu.a and libspu.a binaries and release your source.

I'm not quite sure if there's other distros I should compile this for atm. pdaXrom beta 3 is still what I use.

I apologise in advance to pdaXrom people for the hijack.

But I would love to see a version of psx4zaurus on Angstrom distro. This would be a double bonus, we would love a high quality emulator and I would also like to see any problems angstrom causes so they can be fixed.

I beleive we have a working external toolchain now so you don't even have to get dirty with OE. We would be happy to do that for you at a later date if you eventually did release source.

Update: toolchain found here http://www.angstrom-distribution.org/unstable/toolchain/

we all know that sound support in the 2.6 kernel has a long way to catch up to the quality of the 2.4 kernel...

*coughs* I suggest you guys actually take the correct driver from 2.6 then. As it was written by the company that designed the sound system. Exposes all the power of the codec. And has far supierior sound quality to the 2.4 driver.

http://opensource.wolfsonmicro.com if you need the link to the correct driver.

there's no doubting koen's talent, or any of the angstrom team. I think they simply don't realise how much they all know and how far behind we are! They need to find some people of intermediate level who can provide support and documentation without getting bored!

Your kind words underestimate us, we are really all just kids with ADD and total social ineptitude from using computers too much :-)

But seriously, yes it would be great for more users to become power users then start helping other users. As a lot of the time we are focussed on the code and core problems. Niceties and polish take time.

Is there anything better then xpdf for reading pdf files on Zaurus ?
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Yes, epdfview, find it here [a href=\"http://trac.emma-soft.com/epdfview/]http://trac.emma-soft.com/epdfview/[/url]

It uses poppler as its pdf reading backend and gtk+-2.X for its gui.

There are build recipes in OE you can adapt to pdaXrom.

BTW this one is FAST ™

The 2.6 kernels have a really slow SDL it seems. I have a C1000 so without proper QVGA support, it's no good. :-/

The Angstrom kernel can do qvga on C1000 and C3X00 devices, you just need to use fbset or call the ioctl for mode change. The mode is actually called 240x320 as its always in portrait. I thought pdaXrom had the same set of patches for the console. Maybe they missed one or SDL is being dumb.

I know this works as we use it within mplayer to change to QVGA for using overlays for video.
