Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Openzaurus 3.5.4 Released
« on: June 08, 2006, 01:08:40 pm »
Hi. I clicked on the link and got an error message: "Stack overflow at line72".

Have never seen that before.

Thanks for all the hard work at putting together the new Open ROM.   A question for you -are there resources on how to use it -for example: how to install apps.  I find this very difficult on the Open ROMs -especially when dependencies are involved.

I liked the Sharp ROM in that the install procedure was GUI based and relatively painless.

Cheers.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Problem Using Wellenreiter On Oz 3.5.3 W. Socket
« on: November 11, 2005, 10:34:22 am »
Hi gang.  I have 3.5.3 installed on my Zaurus 5500.  I also am using a Socket WLAN CF card.  I am able to locate wireless networks and surf.  However, when I install the Wellenreiter I am unable to configure it -the name section in the Interface tab stays blank and it gives me no options.

Your help guys would be great.

Thanks,

Grant

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Flash To New Oz 3.5.3 With Opie
« on: September 28, 2005, 01:02:39 pm »
Hi everyone.  I have a Zaurus 5500.  I am trying to install OZ and Opie ROM on it. I put the 2 necessary bin files on a new out-of-boxCF 256mb card (presumed formatted FAT16).  However, after I flashed it, the 2 lights just stayed on.

Any idea?

Thanks much,

Sharp ROMs / Kismet And The Sharp 3.13 Rom
« on: September 25, 2005, 08:56:51 am »
Hi guys.  Does this procedure work easily with the Sharp 3.1 ROM and Socket card?   (ie no special drivers or installation?)

If yes, what config do I use in the Kismet.conf.

Thanks,

Grant

okay

here it is...sorry for being so late

install-all to internal drive:

    * libstdc6_1.2.2_arm.ipk
    * libpcap - [libpcap0_0.7.2_arm.ipk
    * kismet3 - [kismet_3.0.1c-20031228_arm.ipk
    * kismet-qt - [kismet-qt_2.0.0_arm.ipk

hold down the kismet icon in applications and checkmark "start with root" and remove checkmark on "magnify".

su and use zeditor or your favorite editing program and change variables in /usr/local/etc/kismet.conf

change with zeditor or your favorite as su or root and change the variables in

the code looks like this combined

look deep but you will find it.

Once that is done create a network profile as follows:

now start up kismet and it will lock up.....wait no more than probably a minute and it will say that it cannot connect to server.  click on quit and then hit config tab in kismet.  change scheme to socket and click on save and close kismet.  click the icon connection manager in the taskbar and connect to kismet.  Once it says "connected", go to applications tab and start up kismet.  Give it a few seconds and you have your results.

after all that mess, all you need to to from now on is...
Connect to this network which is kismet and then start Kismet.  that is all.

if you cant find the ipk, email me and ill send em to you guys.

I am unable to edit it if I install kismet in the default root location.

What are you trying to use to edit the file? I wouldn't use the GUI editor app as iirc it adds line feeds which will break the conf file.

Use the command line, 'su -' to become root and then use vi (you'll have to google for some instructions about that though).

Hi.  I am using the built in text editor to edit the config file.    Which one should I use?

The problem I was having is that I wanted to install the program in root but as having problems editing the config file.   Using su apparently helps.  Alternatively I can install the program on the SD card and then symlink it but I have no clue on how to do that.

I wish there was better documentation out there.

Thanks again for replying.

Hi everyone.  I just wanted to give an update about what has happened to me since I started this post.

I did some research online, and it turns out the Socket card doesnt work with the stock Sharp ROM on the Zaurus 5500. The person who wrote this offered advice on installing additional drivers and provided a customised ROM.

[a href=\"http://www.cypherpunks.ca/zaurus/socket.html]http://www.cypherpunks.ca/zaurus/socket.html[/url]

I may look at getting OZ (which apparently works better with sniffers) or the newest Sharp ROM 3.13 (maybe works).

All this customisation and programming for a program is a big hassle.  I may also sell my Socket and get a Pretec instead.

Hi,  Thanks for responding, howver the program still doesn't work.  I think the problem is the config file kismet.conf.  I am unable to edit it if I install kismet in the default root location.  I tried to install on a SD card but I couldn't figure out how to get it working.

This has been the damn hardest program to install.  I have searched on the web but people have done different things to get it working.

I would really appreciate some help here.

Thanks again.

Security and Networking / Help Requested Installing Wifi Utilities On 5500

The Kismet installation quest goes on (an update):

Regarding installing Kismet, I found the link (https://www.timekiller.org/howtos/kismet-5600.html) which seems clear enough to follow.  However I have no idea how to create scripts.
Also, I am not sure if it's compatible with my CF card (Socket).

Does anyone know if there's an updated version converted for the Zaurus?  (I found 2.6)

Hi all. I just got a socket CF wireless LAN card for my 5500 that has the Sharp ROM version 3.10.  I have tried to install a sniffer program like Kismet or Wellenreiter but both attempts have failed.

Does anyone have any suggestions about a program that is powerful yet simple to install ?
I am a relative newbie and need clear step-by-step instructions.

The program would have to work with Socket card and the Sharp rom.

Thanks very much.  Long live the Zaurus !

Could you be more specific about why they failed to install? Have you managed to connect to a known wireless point ok via the wireless network wizard? I seem to recall Kismet needs the sudo package installed first.

Half the reason for replying is that I have a similar lack of success on the wifi front.
I'm using a sharp 3.10 ROM, Pretec WiFi card & kismet.
Ignoring kismet for a moment, I can't even get my Z to connect to my home wifi network (belkin f5d7632uk4 with security disabled). I just get "Initializing" shown in the network panel.

I had better luck on my old ROM - certainly Kismet operated ok. I think I had to manually add the pretec card listing into a file somewhere, though I can't recall the details. Also, this time around I followed the howto about installing kistmet on the SD card, but now I run up the Kismet UI I just get "error connecting to server".

Hi Tim.  Sorry to hear about your problems.  My Socket CF card works fine for my Zaurus.  I would suggest that you call Sharp about getting your card to work.  I do know that you can configure the Zautrus to read your network by running the network program.   I am not sure if you need a special driver or config set up for your Crad but Sharp should be able to help.

When I try to run programs like Kismet or Wellenreiter, Wellenreiter doesn't even run.  I also get the error unable to connect to server on Kismet.  When I go to the Kismet site, the install instructions are impossible to understand (geared for techies).

Thanks for contacting me and let me know how it goes.

General Discussion / Memory full error Zaurus
« on: August 29, 2004, 04:22:34 pm »
Hi everyone.  .

I have a Zaurus 5500 with Sharp ROM 3.1 which I love but I have noticed that I have little ram (2.9 mbs) left (with no programs running).  It is saying that there is 12 mbs of cache being used.  I have no idea what this is.

Is there a way to fix this?  Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks and peace to all.

Toronto / New Member Introduction
« on: August 22, 2004, 01:07:26 pm »
Hi Everyone.  I just wanted to introduce myself  - I am new to the Toronto ZUG.

I bought a 5500SL a few months ago and just now have only managed to get it working.  I tried to install oz twice, but it failed to work.  Have also encountered memory problems.  Would greatly appreciate some help (Sharp's support is absolutely useless).  It would be nice to see what everyone else is up to with their PDAs.

Do you guys ever meet?

Bye for now
