Zaurus - pdaXrom / Most important missing/to be fixed in pdaXrom?
« on: October 31, 2004, 11:05:19 am »
Just to echo some other comments, right now my 860 is a mini laptop, which is super cool, but it is a really lousy PDA. I really, really need audible alarms working in KOPI for my 860 to be truly useful as a PDA.

Here are some other things I would love:
1) User configurable hotkeys (I would like to use the calender key to launch the calender and would rather use the useless (to me) Japanese for CTRL and ALT).
2) CUPS support so that I could print to a networked printer. Failing that, an Abiword build that doesn't crash when trying to print to ps.
3) It would be great if the rom asked you to set a root password and to create a user for all normal processes by default. If I am going to use it as a portable computer, I want to configure it like I would a computer (where I use root sparingly).
4) Better documentation for the cross compiler. I would love to help out with building new packages (both for myself and for the feed), but I have had no luck getting cross-compiling working.

Otherwise, I think the rom is super sweet and thank you guys for the work you've been doing.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / AbiWord Weirdness in RC5
« on: October 23, 2004, 06:11:01 pm »
I had the same problem and figured out:

If you click on Abiword to start it, then don't move the mouse arrow, it will be sitting over the new document button. By hitting the space bar, the mouse arrow will push on the new doc button. All you have to do to prevent it is to move the arrow over the document body after abiword starts.

Now if I could just get abiword to print without crashing I would be a very happy man.

General Discussion / Sharp C-860 VS Sony UX-50
« on: October 16, 2004, 05:22:53 pm »
As someone who has used Palm devices a lot, I can say there is really no comparison. The basic architecture of PalmOS hasn't changed all that much since inception (with the exception of increasing size limits and stuff). Transferring files and installing software onto palm is a huge pain and it is just overall a very weak OS in terms of flexibility. So while the clie may have some attractive hardware features, the OS is such a huge weakness I would never consider it.

General Discussion / price japan

Yeah, I can't say enough good things about PriceJapan. They are so responsive. I had to send my 860 in for repairs (I cracked the screen) and they were so helpful throughout the process.

Deals and Great Z Buys / Otterbox cases roxors!
« on: October 11, 2004, 06:41:50 pm »
After cracking the screen on my SL-C860 and paying an obnoxious amount to have it repaired, I wanted to get a very durable case to prevent it happening again. After shopping around, I came across OtterBox Cases and, more specifically, The OtterBox 2000. It's only 16.95 plus shipping, and I actually got the one from the Bargain Bin for just $10. My 860 fits snugly inside even with the Pretec CF WIFI card installed (which I think is one of the longer cards). The cases are meant to be waterproof to 30m and crushproof. Check them out...

For Sale / Wanted / SL-C860 with cracked screen

Thanks for people's interest in my broken zaurus, but I decided that I really want to just get it fixed and buy a really strong case for it so I don't crack the damn screen again

For Sale / Wanted / SL-C860 with cracked screen
« on: September 27, 2004, 07:01:02 am »
So I cracked the screen on my month-old SL-C860
I sent it back to Japan for repair and Sharp wants $272 for a new screen (which seems a bit outrageous since Palm charges $125 for screen replacement. I know the zaurus has a better screen, but still...).

Anyway, I am wondering if it is worth paying for the repair. Does anyone have any use for a zaurus with a cracked screen (for parts, ssh host, etc)? If so please let me know what you think it would be worth.  If someone needs the parts and wants it at a good enough price, it might be worth selling unrepaired.

For Sale / Wanted / WANTED: Bricked C760/860 with good screen
« on: September 25, 2004, 08:43:20 am »
I did the same thing about a month ago. I sent it back to Japan via Pricejapan.com (where I bought it). Of course, Sharp refused to fix it under warranty so it got sent to the factory for paid repairs. I am still waiting for an estimate, but will post here when I know what they charge for a new screen...

Sharp ROMs / What would you like to see in Cacko 1.22 ROM?
« on: August 28, 2004, 09:42:02 am »
With all the talk of lite/full roms, it would be awesome to have a customizable rom. Back in the dark ages when I was using a T-mobile PocketPC phone (I know, I am ashamed     ), I came across something called rom kitchen:
XDA-Developers ROM kitchen

It basically allows you to click which programs you want included in the customized ROM. It has a bar on top that tells you how much ROM space you have, etc. The scripts for it are OSS and run on linux, so it might not be that hard to modify for Cacko. It would be so sweet if each person could choose exactly which packages to include in their rom and would be nice for Maslovsky to not have to listen to "Opera suxors, use netfront!" "No netfront is lamers, opera only!"
Also, it allows people to make sure the rom uses all available space by allowing you to roll ipks you know you will use and keep into the rom (of course, makes version upgrades a pain, but still).

General Discussion / Is there a new CXXX coming soon?
« on: August 07, 2004, 09:53:38 am »
The one issue I have with BT is that the security seems really poor. Look at some of the bluejacking/bluesnarfing sites. It's really trivial to hack into BT devices, even ones that are not discoverable. I'm not sure how good I feel about using BT in the middle of NYC, daring people to easily hack in.

General Discussion / Lord, do not make me commit the Crime!
« on: August 07, 2004, 09:47:40 am »
On the topic of the Treo 600:

My brother's office switched over to them, so they have like 30-40 people using them. Since they started about 4 months ago, at least half of the units have been sent back for warranty replacement. They simply break, and I don't mean dead pixels, they just stop working.

As for me, I have tried the integrated PDA/phone and have decided that I just want a simple, small mobile that just works with good reception and a loud ringer. I don't need any of the other bells and whistles. The pda I want to be a good pda without hastily tossed in phone features that are obtrusive and don't work all that well.

Ko/PI and Ka/PI, I think, are amazing. I am on an SL-C860, so the bigger screen makes all the difference. However, it is amazing to have my entire calender and all my contacts on my PDA the exact same way as they appear on the desktop. No more custom fields to map (since Palm still only allows one address and four phone numbers per contact which is inadequate) and no more information that gets lost in the sync. Plus, if the pda crashes, all I have to do is copy two little files from kontact and everything is there again the exact same way. If I were you, consider getting a 640x480 zaurus and reevaluate the usefulness of ko/PI and ka/PI.

Finally, I just switched from a palm (Tungsten T3) to the zaurus. The Z is worlds ahead of the palm in terms of an architecture. The file system on the palm is still so lame and backwards, it makes it such a pain to put any document on there without a conversion program. For example, forget putting pdfs on your palm unless you are running the windows acroread conduit. WindowsCE is a little better (though I hate myself for saying it  ) and syncs beautifully if and only if you are running outlook under windows. It sucks trying to sync with kontact or evo.

Sorry for the extended rant...

Linux Applications / Cross-compilation installation package
« on: August 03, 2004, 09:51:42 pm »
My libtool is:

ltmain.sh (GNU libtool) 1.4.3 (1.922.2.111 2002/10/23 02:54:36)

on a gentoo box running 2.6.7. Let me know what libtool version you know works and I can try that to see if that is the problem. Failing that, I will check with the libSDL folks.

Thanks

Linux Applications / Cross-compilation installation package
« on: July 30, 2004, 01:21:02 pm »
I tried installing it (and am really excited to get it working). The main install works fine, but then the library install crashes. Specifically, I have problems with libSDL compiling:

Code: [Select]
/bin/sh ../../libtool --mode=compile arm-linux-as   -c -o SDL_blit_arm.lo `test -f SDL_blit_arm.S || echo './'`SDL_blit_arm.S
libtool: compile: unable to infer tagged configuration
libtool: compile: specify a tag with `--tag'
make[3]: *** [SDL_blit_arm.lo] Error 1
make[3]: Leaving directory `/home/dan/zaurus/cross_compile/cross_install-2.95/libSDL/src/video'
make[2]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/dan/zaurus/cross_compile/cross_install-2.95/libSDL/src/video'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/dan/zaurus/cross_compile/cross_install-2.95/libSDL/src'
make: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
Problem while installing libSDL!

Any suggestions how to fix that?

Thanks

NYC / subway maps
« on: July 29, 2004, 02:04:04 pm »
Wow, that looks like a really nice package. I am going to start working on NYC in my not too copious spare time.

I used metro when I had a PPC and palm and it was pretty nice, but I never read the license. It's pretty disappointing that they won't work on a Z version nor will they facilitate anyone doing it.

At any rate, I doubt even NYC's huge subway network will take more than a few (8-10?) hours to input (unless I really misread the website about how to make new maps).

Deals and Great Z Buys / C860 from PriceJapan.com
« on: July 29, 2004, 12:55:50 pm »
My price was 628 including overnight DHL shipping. The nearest competitor I could find was like 665 plus 35 for shipping (and that was the EMS shipping which is a lot slower).
