I've got a spare one (black basecamp).
I'm located in Belgium.
(It's never been used, I ordered two)
Hi, if you are willing to sell your spare Basecamp please e-mail me at slithy@yahoo.com and let me know your price (including postage to the UK). I can pay by PayPal if that is convenient for you.

Thanks!

For Sale / Wanted / Wanted: Grinder Gear Case
« on: January 07, 2005, 06:18:21 pm »
I want to buy a Grinder Gear PDA case for my Zaurus SL-5000D and all its accessories. I'd like the Expedition case but I would settle for the Basecamp. It seems that the company has gone out of business and has discontinued the line. Does anyone know of any stockists that still have some stock of either case, or would anyone be willing to sell me theirs?

Thanks!

« on: December 29, 2004, 11:30:44 am »
Hi, does anyone know if it is possible to buy Grinder Gear PDA cases in the UK? I searched Google but so far haven't found a UK distributor, and the main USA site (www.grindergear.com) seems to be down. Thanks!

Software / opie-sheet - how do I import .xls?
« on: November 02, 2004, 07:30:47 pm »
I had a similar problem with opie-sheet and I got around it by creating the desktop file by hand. The file I wanted to import was actually an OpenOffice.org spreadsheet, but as opie-sheet can't import those I had to export it as an Excel sheet first. I copied this new sheet (groups.xls) to /root/Documents/applications/excel (although the location may not make a difference?) and in the same directory I created (with vi) a file groups.desktop as follows:

[Desktop Entry]
Categories =
File = groups.xls
Name = groups.xls
Type = application/excel

Now when I use "File/Import Excel File" it reads the file correctly and I can save it as opie-sheet format. It was a bit of a faff to do the conversion but the end result is what I wanted. I didn't do anything with mime.types.

I can't see any way to convert the file back into Excel/OpenOffice.org format which seems a serious limitation. Fortunately for me I didn't need to, I just wanted this spreadsheet with me for reference.

I'm running OZ Hentges ROM/3.3.6-pre1/Opie 1.1.3, with the doctab off.

You can run a Samba server on your Z and use smbmount on your Linux box to do what you want.

Accessories / USB Cable instead of Cradle?
« on: October 30, 2004, 08:10:34 pm »
If you are in the UK and interested in getting one of these extendable USB cables, with a multiplicity of charging options, try the "Sharp Zaurus Mini Travel Kit Plus" from PDA Addons. They sell on E-bay or you can buy direct from their site. Here is one of their E-bay auctions:

Zaurus Mini Travel Kit Plus

I just got one of these kits and I am delighted with it. It includes:

- extendable USB sync/charge cable
- wall charger 110/240V with plugs for UK/USA/EU/AUS
- car charger
- battery extender

Basically you plug the USB sync/charge cable into your Z and the other end goes to a USB port or to one of the included chargers.

It works great for charging, but I haven't used it for syncing beyond a brief test.

Their "Buy It Now" price for this kit is £21.99 + £2.00 shipping (£3.00 worldwide). If you don't want the battery extender there is a cheaper kit for £17.99.

I'm not affiliated with this company, just happy with the product they sold me! Now I can play MP3s and OGGs in the car to my heart's content ...

Themes, Icons, and Backgrounds / Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
« on: October 17, 2004, 05:44:33 pm »
Hello Hitchhiker fans,

I have just uploaded my Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy background to zaurusthemes.com

[img]http://www.zaurusthemes.com/Backgrounds/Science_Fiction/hitchhiker.jpg\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]

Other H2G2 trivia on my Z:

I have the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy MP3 CD (buy at Amazon) so I copied the files to my Z and can listen using opieplayer2. Now I just need a h2g2 skin to make that complete ...

If you have Frotz or any Zcode interpreter installed, you can even play the H2G2 text adventure game on your Z (you need the file hhgg.z5 which was last sold on "The Lost Treasures of Infocom" collection or you may find it kicking around on the Internet somewhere ...)

Off-topic, but check out the new Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy radio series (tertiary phase) at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/hitchhikers/. You can listen to the programmes or play the game online. And watch out for the movie next year.

5x00 Hardware / SL-5500 - hardware to buy
« on: October 06, 2004, 07:23:20 pm »
I have a Pretec 56K Pocket PC CompactModem™, which I bought on Ebay for about 10 pounds (That's about USD $18 to our colonial friends). It worked straight out of the box for PPP and sending/receiving faxes (with efax). I find it indispensible when travelling.

I have a Bluetooth card too but I find it more fiddly to get the connection up, so for ease of use I prefer the modem.

Software / Fax software for Z?
« on: September 27, 2004, 01:09:26 pm »
Hi, I have recently bought a CF fax/modem. It works fine for PPP, but I would also like to be able to send and receive faxes. Is anyone aware of any software for the Z which handles this?

Ireland / Is anyone still out there?
« on: September 27, 2004, 01:03:34 pm »
Well this seems like a rural, idyllic, quiet forum with not much going on. What is a ZUG supposed to do anyway - get together for a Guinness and Bluetooth session?

FWIW I am in Belfast and I have a Zaurus SL-5000D with a 64 Mb CF card, 256 Mb SD card, CF modem, CF Bluetooth card. Haven't got into WiFi yet. I have had my Z for about a year, and mostly just used the PIM apps, which I find very useful. Recently I bought the modem/bluetooth cards and reflashed to Hentges ROM with OZ 3.3.6-pre1 and Opie 1.1.3, which I think is great. I have installed a lot more software and now I'm word processing and e-mailing and even using the shopping list manager. I also wrote a little script to get each day's Dilbert cartoon with wget. I have to say that the PIM is still the most useful thing but everything else gives hours of endless fun and I am no longer bored in the dentist's waiting room.

Anyone else out there north of the border?

Software / QPSword Questions
« on: September 19, 2004, 05:22:34 pm »
Sorry I'm a bit late to be contributing to this thread, but I'll add my $0.02 anyway:

The latest QPSword KJV module changed from old GBF markup to new OSIS markup. Unfortunately the new markup seems not to have been properly debugged, hence the corruption or loss of some chapters, e.g. in John's gospel. Also Strongs lookup does not work.

The workaround is to roll back to the previous version, with GBF markup, which works fine, both for reading and for finding Strongs numbers. You can find this module at:

http://www.crosswire.org/feeds/arm/ipk/zau....4.1_noarch.ipk

Hope that helps.

General Discussion / how to transfer files
« on: September 19, 2004, 02:41:35 pm »
To transfer a single file or just a couple of files, I usually use scp. But if you prefer an ftp-like interface, use sftp (comes as part of the ssh client on my Debian woody box). Normal ftp won't work unless you have an ftp server running on your Z, but sftp is better anyway.

I added a password to root on my Z, but you can still login without having to type it by sharing a key between the desktop machine and the Z:

(On the desktop)

Create a public/private key pair:

Code: [Select]
$ ssh-keygen -t rsa
Then copy the public key to your Z:

Code: [Select]
$ scp ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub root@zaurus:/root/.ssh/authorized_keys
(Assumes "zaurus" is in your /etc/hosts)

Now you can ssh, scp or sftp from your desktop to the Z without having to type a password, even if a password is set.

But it seems to me that what the original poster wants is to be able to access the Internet from his Z via the desktop, i.e. you need to set up the desktop as a masquerading router. In brief:
  • Enable networking between Z and Linux box (seems like you have got this far)
  • Edit /etc/resolv.conf and add your DNS servers
  • Type "route" on the Z and check your default route is through the Linux box
  • On the Linux box, enable IP masquerading (NAT) in the kernel
  • Use iptables (NAT) to enable masquerading
  • Type "ping zaurususergroup.com" on the Z to confirm that everything works
  • Now use AQPkg (or "ipkg update" and "ipkg install") to install packages.

Security and Networking / Beaming info to a mobile phone
« on: September 18, 2004, 04:24:43 pm »
Hi

I have recently set up Bluetooth on my Zaurus (SL-5000D / OpenZaurus Hentges ROM / 3.3.6-pre1 / Opie 1.1.3 / Bluez drivers) and can connect to a desktop PC using PPP - all of that works fine. What I am having trouble with is sending/receiving data to/from a mobile phone (Nokia 6600).

When I try to "beam" any data, OZ always says "Bluetooth is not available" - am I missing something or does this just not work with Bluez?

I have also tried to "beam" data with IrDA, but with little success. I did succeed in beaming a contact from the Z to the phone, and did manage to receive a photo from the phone to the Z. But most of the time the Z loses contact with the phone just as communication is supposed to begin. Is there anything I can do to make this connection reliable?

Thanks!
