New products and alternatives / New Zaurus Successor?
« on: December 08, 2006, 08:36:34 am »
I'd like to see it next to the Libretto U100, as I own one and was interested in the size difference.  I am finding that I don't need something as powerful as the Libretto and having something with a longer than 3 hour battery life would be more appropriate for what I use the Libretto for.

I can second the ioconcepts (pl2303) usb-serial adaptor works.  I got mine at CompUSA here in the states for around $30.  You can find it and others with the Prolific PL2303 chipset much cheaper online.  Kernel Modules for SharpROM can be found here for other usb-serial devices http://www.enm.bris.ac.uk/teaching/enjmr/Zaurus_SL-C3000/

Moto has a new PDA/Smartphone with touchscreen on the horizon, the e690.  Another candidate for openEZX?  The interface looks like the one on the A780.  http://board.phonehk.com/viewthread.php?ti...&extra=page%3D1

this should just be plug and play if it is an 802.11b adaptor

if it still dosent work then you may have to edit a pcmcia conf file or two,

might also want to tell us which distro you are running (better yet put it in your tag)
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

The card is an 802.11g card.  User ztep has built a driver for it, but it depends on what distro you are using.  [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=21081]https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=21081  perhaps he can help you.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Which Is The Fastest Wm?

Just as in the topic line, which WM is fastest (mainly for loading programs, so I guess the least amount of RAM or CPU necessary is what I'm asking).

If you are running another window manager, let me know and I'll add it to the poll.  Please also post below what you think is faster about it than other window managers.

I believe ratpoison has the least requirements on the Z.  theres an old package for rc5 in the unstable feed.  Im my experience windowmaker is faster than matchbox on the Z though.  the windowmaker packages found in this forum are customized well for the pda environment.

OT: hows e17 speed wise? it runs acceptably on my 266MHz powerpc box. i would think it would be more than acceptable on the Z.

The contributions here have certainly awaken my interest in the new U100. First some newbie questions, which one of you may kidly answer: Is Ubuntu another Linux distribution? Secondly, how easy is it to run Linux and Windows XP concurrently on the U100?  In previous ocassions I could only install linux virtually on a Windows XP Pro machine.

I am trying to figure the installation scenario for a new U100. It will come out of the box with Windows XP Home installed. Do I just chuck a linux distribution into the CD drive, re-claim part of the HardDisk space for Linux and proceed with the Linux installation? I can't envisage things being as easy as that.

I'll be grateful for any response to the above questions.

Cheers,
Chroafjd

Yes Ubuntu is another linux distro.  Im running Ubuntu 6.06 on my libretto U100.  Yes i do Dual Boot winXP and Linux.  Don't bother with the XP that it comes with.  It is full of unnecessary applications that use alot of resources.  I bought a student copy of XP from my University bookstore and used the windows installer to make a 15gig partion for it.  I installed windows on that partition.  The toshiba website contains all of the drivers required to get all of the hardware working.  Then I went to [a href=\"http://cdimages.ubuntu.com]http://cdimages.ubuntu.com and downloaded the latest beta of 6.06.  Using the Ubuntu partitoning utility i created an 8gig partion for /, 1gig for swap, and the remaining for /home.  The Ubuntu installer will detect the windows MBR and install the grub boot loader over top.  At boot you will beable to select windows or linux and boot appropriately.  Wireless, video, network, all work out of the box.

Are you talking about the Libretto U100 - that small little beast from Toshiba ?
I think in form factor that reaalyu comes close to the zaurus while giving full functionality.

But where in the hell (or rather where in Ebay) do you get THAT for $300 ?
And a new U100 is around $1500 now. Thats 3 top class Zaurus's for you.

I would gladly buy a U100 form factor laptop if only it was cheaper and it ran Linux well.
(device support). Till then I am gladly running my Zaurus for all needsa it fulfills.

It does run linux well....extremely well.  The only thing I cant get working is the bluetooth.  Theres a kernel patch for it but its only for 2.6.11.  And the Authentec fingerprint scanner has a $500 SDK so its unsupported too.  Other than that it is most fantasic.  Even at only 1.2GHz its really snappy under linux.

There is a slideware component to gnome-office but the name escapes me.  Also there is KPresenter from KOffice.  I dont think IPK's exist, so compling on PDAX would be needed.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pdaxrom On A Oqo?
« on: February 09, 2006, 07:56:04 am »

well, the oqo is an immature overated little toy claiming to be a laptop. honestly, I reckon I would had been happier with a Libretto U100.
the oqo is a bit faster than the Zaurus having a 1 GHz CPU and more memory and disk space. It also has built-in wifi and bluetooth which is nice BUT it's one heavy brick and it gets HOT after only a short time of usage. The screen has a slightly bigger resolution than the Z but is not much better and the touch screen aspect of it sux, as in misaligned and inaccurate. The keyboard is almost unusable and quite cumbersome to type on compared to the Z's superb keyboard layout. Also battery life sux at a mere 1.5 - 3 hours. I might give the oqo to my sister and get myself a new libretto.

I am really happy with my new U100.  The 1.2Ghz Pentium M with 512MB ram feels faster than my 1.4Ghz Athlon desktop.  Wifi and bluetooth work beautifly.  They are well supported under linux, atheros and CSR chipsets respectively.  The Atheros chip supports Super-G 108Mbps.  Same as my router.  I was able to send files over bluetooth 2.0 to a friends ibook at speeds of 384kbps.  Theres no lag streaming music and video from my file server.  The screen is ultra bright and GEORGOUS at 1280x768.  All on a 7.2 inch screen.  The keyboard is small but useable.  You can touch type on it with practice.  I get around 4 hours of batter with wireless on.  I got mine new on Ebay with Toshiba warrenty for US$1552.00.  Linux on the u100 is awesome.  Everything is supported except for the SD card reader (unsupported TI chipset).  It does get a little hot, but not as hot as some other laptops I have used.  I have a small windows partition for playing Halo.  It works just fine with the integrated video.  A word of caution if you are a windows user though.  The preinstalled software...sucks.  At first boot theres something like 62 running process and it just dragged down the rest of the system.  In frustration I just reformatted and repartitioned it for linux.  The toshiba website contains all of the drivers for all of the hardware including the fingerprint scanner.  Interesting to note is that the included dvd docking station is also a dvd-ram burner..not something you see all of the time.  The dock also has dedicated dvd playback buttons on it, but you need a driver for it and it only works with the special version of winDVD that comes on a cd.  Not too big of a deal, I probably wouldnt use them anyway.  The bios is sort of strange too, but livable.  You configure it the first time you turn the computer on and after that you cant get back into it.  On boot there is a graphical selector for booting from cd, HD, SD, LAN, or USB.  The rest of the functions of the bios are only configurable through a windows executable on the toshiba website.  Besides the Z, this is one of the best purchases I have made.

If you want to know more just hit me up here or with a PM.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Mouse Scroll Wheel
« on: February 08, 2006, 09:20:30 am »
I used the first beta of PDAX rc12 on c3000.  It was compiled by THc, He may have added more mouse support.  Under Cacko 1.23b1 scroll wheel had to be used horizontally for vertical scrolling.

nope... for me it is also not working.

i've tried a cheap a4tech notebook mouse, a razer diamondback and a razer copperhead but non of the scrollwheels work there.

When I still had my c3000 my scroll wheel worked on my Apple Mighty Mouse, In Cacko it only worked horizontally.  In PDAX it worked correctly.

Off Topic forum / Linux Network Attached Storage
« on: January 31, 2006, 09:59:33 am »
Hello Z-users,
I am in the market for a new network attached strorage device.  I need it to be able to read linux partitions though.  I have a 200gig drive with 2 100gig partitions on it.  I would like to share this drive on my network.  Currently I use a spare box running linux and samba to share files to others connected behind my router.  The problem is that the box is big (4U rackmount) and loud (usual 120mm fan found in big rack cases).  I need something smaller and quieter.  Most of the consumer NAS devices (netgear sc101, dlink, bytec, etc) can only read fat32 partitions.  I stumbled upon the kurobox (www.revogear.com), which is a hackable Buffalo LinkStation made by a sister company of Buffalo Japan.  It runs linux on a 2.4.17 kernel and has a small community run forum.  It appears to do everything I want including act as a print server.  But the community looks stagnant and its being replaced with a new model that is out of my price range.  So my question stands.

Is there a NAS device that is:
Smaller than a PC
Quieter than a PC
Can read linux partitions
Come as an Enclosure (I dont want one with a HD already in it unless its in my price range)
Under US$200
Acting as a print server is also a plus.

PS: I would consider other suggestioins too.
PPS: Yes Ive seen the linksys nsl2 but you can only use USB drives
