General Discussion / Thinking About Selling Some Zs?
« on: July 06, 2005, 08:34:06 am »
Yeah. Seems that I would need to give it a bit more thought. Bic Camera in Yurakucho (my 10% credit) charges 79,800 for the 3100.
PriceJapan says the cheapest price is 63,600. Not sure where the 16,200 difference comes from.
I am starting to guess that between the limited number of buyers, shipping, and the small margins charged by vendors,
it's probably not something I should mess with right now. If any bright ideas pop up, let me know.
Otherwise, I will probably put it on the shelf for a bit.

my advice is
1) make it very clear what you're selling and what not (e.g. international power supply, cables etc)
2) make it very clear what support you offer (sold with/without Jp->English conversion)
3) make it very clear how you handle returns (who pays for shipping, how you charge for repairs etc)

If you know people who regularly travel from Jp to UK/Eu/USA, you'd have a useful conduit for couriering items.

I'd say there's a definite market,  ebay seems to be a popular place for people to do this. see also conics, pricejapan etc etc. Check out the "where to buy" at https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=General

You'll find there's a three-tier system. People like Trisoft who do a top professional service - get EU approvals, provide documentation online, provide repair service. Then there's a midle tier, Conics, who do a simple language conversion and a basic returns.
And finally there's the "pack it and ship it, you're on you're own" services.

I bought my 860 from the latter (ebay), because I saved enough money to factor in the risk of having to arrange my own repair.  Like anything on ebay, is the price saving covering the true costs of risk... sorry, I digress.

I hope you DO do it, especially if you are able to do all the accessories and interesting software like picsel viewers too.

Paul,
Thank you for your input. I had the same general idea, though I haven't done any proper research yet.
I probably would fall between the 2nd and 3rd level you described.

Level 1: I don't have the time to get goverment approval, provide documentation, etc, and my repair capabilities would be even worse then
what is described to be the state of Sharp official repairs!

Level 2: I am capable of doing language conversions and the like, though I suspect that the folks buying Zs from OE forums would
probably just asume to do this themselves. Simple returns may be a possibility I would assume, though the shipping costs
is the key problem to work out.

Level 3: I suppose that what I am thinking of doing is not so far from what vendors offer now on ebay.
I guess what I am looking for is any creative ideas on how I can use my advantage of living in Tokyo to both
provide better access to Zs and accessories for people outside Japan, and make it worth a bit of my own time.

As for knowing regular travelers, I am afraid I don't have any good connections, though I do have many friends in the US
and also have a US address (of my "snowbird" parents)

I don't see any reason that if it works to export Zs, that I could not also export interesting accessories as well (for that matter,
I suppose non Zaurus items could be fair game). I really have no idea what the rules are governing Japanese exports, etc. though.
I assume that the companies that currently export Zs also export other products to make a decent profit.
This is not my goal. I am just toying with the idea of a side-business/weekend pastime.

Please keep the ideas coming!

Brian

If it's fairly painless, legal, and worth the trouble, I would give it serious thought!

Hello world,

I am an American living in Tokyo for about 3 years now.
I started using my C700 shortly after arriving and upgraded
to an 860. My next goal is to buy a 3100 (or whatever next comes
down the pike)

This got me to thinking. I live a short distance from Bic Camera in
Yurakucho. As of today, they sell the SL-C3100 for 79,800yen (roughly $720)
They also have a points program that gives a 10% credit for this purchase.
So my idea is to re-sell a few Zs, accessories, etc, close to cost(plus shipping)
and keep the 10% credit. Then once I have enough, I will buy my Z upgrade.

I am thinking of sticking with Paypal payments as I don't want
to mess with credit/checks, etc.

I haven't worked out nearly enough details yet, but wanted to throw out the idea
and see what kind of suggestions (or flames) might come back.

Thanks,
Brian

Software / Changing The User For Apache?
« on: January 08, 2005, 12:51:02 am »
Tehas,
Thank you for your reply. This sounds like what I want.
I am not sure about where best to get Opie-Sh.
Could you point me to a URL?
Also, what is the sudo package? If you send me a URL that explains it,
I will find out for myself.

Thanks again

Software / Changing The User For Apache?
« on: January 07, 2005, 09:28:52 am »
I have Apache/PHP/Mysql running on my 860 now as root.
The problem is that when I power down, the root user is killed.

I want to do development on my Z, but it is a pain to shut down the
process all the time.

I think what I want is a way to run Apache (and then Mysql) from
zaurus instead of root. Anyone know how?

It would also be nice to run both apps from an icon or possibly
start both during boot up.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sharp ROMs / Qtopia 2.1.0 Source Now Available On Tt Ftp Site

You are correct about Cacko. I just don't know what the advantage of Cacko is over the Sharp rom. Plus, it adds support for Crylic (sorry if bad spelling) fonts etc. that I don't need.

I hope Japanese input works with 2.1.0. I guess I will have to wait and see.

You are probably right. I haven't been keeping up with the politics involved.
As an 860 user in Japan who needs to keep Japanese support, the Trolltech option seems to be the best/only choice. I will just try and be patient.

So should I take silence to mean it is not meant for the 700/800 series?

A possibly dumb question.

Will there be a rom available for the 700/760/860?
Most importantly to me is 860

If so, will this also be around before the new year?

I would bet a few bucks that the time zone has been changed on either your Z or on your PC and that is what is causing the time difference.

A good sign of this is if all of your all day events are still in the right place.

Hope that helps.

Software / How To Edit Epwing Dictionary Files
« on: December 22, 2004, 07:21:13 am »
I just wanted to add my 2 cents.

I am getting more than a bit annoyed by the replies to g333 and my own inquiries in on how to create dictionary files in either freepwing or any other format what works on the Z (on a windows platform).

Of course they are designed as "read-only". That doesn't mean that one should not be able to edit the data in some way, shape, or fashion.

Several people (not only on this issue) keep posting "search the site first".
I have read just about every &$!# posting on this site and sorry, but I haven't seen one that shows me how to do squat with my windows machine.

I would like to see requests such as this replied to with where to find information, not
"look at the postings". If you know there is information on the site, SHOW ME WHERE

I have been more successful with zbedic format as there is an explanation of the layout of the files. The problem is that the files are compressed or unix formatted and I have no working example of a database to start from.

It would be a dream to have a simple text file version of  either format to play with.

Just my 2 cents.

p.s. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night...

General Discussion / Anyone Remember The Sharp Wizard
« on: December 20, 2004, 09:02:20 am »
My history goes:

Microsoft's first watch PDA (forgot the name)
Some PCMCIA slot PDA (forgot the name)
HP Omnigo
Palm Personal
Toshiba Libretto (Intel 75mhz with a 4gb HD)
Casio Casiopea
2 Handspings (Forgot the models. later one +keyboard -phone)
Zaurus 700
Zaurus 860

The 860 is the best, though I still want to find a calendar app anywhere close
to the Handspring version. I use Portabase for contacts, though the Handspring/Palm
software was better as well.

General Discussion / Best Use Of Space?
« on: December 20, 2004, 08:52:27 am »
Hello all,

In my attempt to make people jealous (and blow all of my money), I have acquired a Panasonic high speed 1GB SD card and a  4gb microdrive for my Zaurus 860.

My question to all is what should I do with my new found space?

So far my I mainly use it for Japanese/English dictionaries, Portabase Databases,
Wikipedia, and a few MP3 files.

Any other suggestions?

A side question:
Anyone know why Sharp doesn't admit to 1GB SD cards working
on the 860, and for that matter 4GB Microdrives?
I haven't had any problems with either.

The only media I know of that doesn't seem to work is a certain batch
of Sandisk 256MB SD cards.

By the way, Merry Christmas!

General Discussion / C860: Best handheld money can buy?
« on: December 16, 2004, 08:58:32 am »
You all have probably seen the posts already, but the 4gb "internal drive" in the 3000 is a Hitachi microdrive!.

As earlier in this post mentioned, Sharp has shoved another CF slot inside the Z and Wham. bam. internal 4gb storage!

The main point being that if you (God forbid) drop your 3000, I think you can still salvage your storage space with a bit of engineering operation/transplant.

I have an 860 and just tonight purchased a 4gb "Buffalo" microdrive (Available in Japan. Comes with an interesting Hitachi label wrapped around it)

Still trying to figure out what best to use this new found space for. Hoping to find a good version of Wikipedia. (so far zbedic is the best option... any opinions?. I know this is talked about all over the place in different posts.)

If I had waited for the 3000 to arrive, I would have purchased one, but
I am not particularly dissapointed in owning the 860.

Either model is a great way to spend your hard earned bucks.
