Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Hentges 3.5.4.1 For Collie

Forget my last comment. The 3.5.4.1 branch can not produce working initrd..bins for Collie, investigating..

Note for the curious: I always boot from NFS when developing.

OK Thanks for the reply. I've used your CardFS before and had no problems previously. I've had my zaurus for a few years now, and to be honest, each release of Opie has become more problematic than the previous. I've been using Slackware for about five years now, so I am now stranger to GNU/Linux and the power of that in a PDA really appealed to me. Add to that the chance to play any kind of media I wanted regardless of format made it the ultimate media device for me. The first release of Opie I tried was wonderful for this, it played video brilliantly and any MP3s I threw at it. I don't really use it much for contacts or to do lists, so most of the software on Opie/GPE is a gimmick for me.  The collie is too small for web browsing/text editing, and the limited battery life of an hour and a half has become a real frustration. It takes several weeks after each release to get everything working as I like, so now rather than buy a new C Series as I was going to do, I'm just going to get an iPod.

Good luck with all your endeavours, Opie/GPE are great projects, but for me they just seem to be going further and further away from what I want.

Hi CoreDump,

I'm not having much luck with the latest version either. When I flash, the lights only come on for about thirty seconds, then go out. When I reboot, I get the error message about the wrong kernel. It seems to find zImage fine, and flash that, but not initrd.bin.

Actually it would've taken less if my build workstation wasn't freezing every couple of hours. I'm afraid the hardware is dying... :/

What do you need Mickeyl? I'm sure between us all we could chip in what spare parts we have and get you a new build machine ;-)

I ordered a cable from Shirt Pocket well over a year ago and never got anywhere despite numerous letters and emails. We should all group together and start a google keyword campaign to warn others about them. Its a disgrace they can continue to get away with ripping people off.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Openzaurus 3.5.3 Pre-release

WOW. CoreDump does it again!

I first got my Zaurus some time ago and very quickly switched from the default Sharp ROM to OpenZaurus. It was great, everything worked, I could play audio and video, network, browse websites, everything I wanted from a PDA. I'm not really fussed about developing on it, I'm not really bothered about PIM, its more of a media player for me. Anyhow, next OpenZaurus update and everything went tits up. The new ROM simply wouldn't flash, and for the life of me I couldn't find the previous ROMs. After several months of frustration, the new ROMs finally started to install but still I couldn't get my Zaurus back to where it was. Then along came CoreDump's SD release and finally I could play audio on my Zaurus. However, with all the trouble I had with my Zaurus, I was looking at a CF/SD reader for my GBA SP and the Zaurus was going back on eBay. Then I noticed CoreDump's pre-release... well as the his was the only ROM I ever managed to get to work for me, I thought it had to be worth a try...

Its excellent. Opie media player now works, so I finally have video back. Using ipkg from the command line is not a problem, apps install easily to SD. I tried just about all the Opie apps I could think of a use for me personally and everyone of them installed till I ran out of space on root. Opie Eye was the only one that didn't work. The new icons look beautiful and I don't know whether its just me but the battery life seems _much_ longer. Hopefully OpenZaurus is back on track and we can go back to making all other PDA users green with envy!

I've also tried the GPE image from Open Zaurus. I prefer the look of GPE being a gnome man, and don't really need the Zaurus for Sysadmin so the lack of "tools" doesn't bother me that much. However, I couldn't install anything on GPE, although I admit I didn't try for very long after discovering CoreDump's excellent (Opie) SD card image. The GPE image is not really usable yet according to the Wiki;

gpe-image

    * gpe-package isn't really usable at the moment.
    * Auto shut-off/screen dimming isn't working yet.
    * Not all gpe-conf sub-applications are Zaurus-friendly yet.
    * If gpe-nmf crashes when you try to play a file, run 'gst-register' from the terminal - This should fix it.
    * Could do with a 'start menu' suspend command (not too important)
    * 'Start menu' suspend function (it is there on mine!) hangs system
    * System is not suspended automatically on battery, despite "Light & Power" settings
    * after VNC installation, /etc/init.d/fbvncinput references a nonexistent group (and fails) - change root.input to root.root
    * must run ldconfig after restart
    * Can't login after having changed owner information - Must re-flash
    * Console (rxvt) closes sometimes (example: ls /etc/init.d), but not in Landscape mode. https://www.oesf.org/forums/inde...?showtopic=7059 has details.
    * At the first boot following the flash process a picture is displayed for quite a long time. There's no progress bar nor activity indicator. Don't reboot, just wait: it's normal.
    * If using rxvt, and opening and then closing on-screen keyboard, closes the terminal

My own personal advice is to install the hentges flavour Opie, and then follow the instructions for installing Opera on this forum. I am eager to see GPE become more usable, unfortunately I am not technically proficient enough to do anything to speed that up!

Dude you da man! I followed your instructions to the letter and Opera works perfectly now. I can now show everyone at work what the content filter DOESN'T want them to see... MUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Keep the thread alive dudes!

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / 3.5.2 - Problems, Fixes, Questions
« on: December 21, 2004, 02:49:34 pm »
I'd just like to add my name to the long list of thanks to CoreDump for his excellent contribution to the Zaurus. After many months of just forgetting I had one, its now back in action. I'd just like to say that the issues with MSN are down to Microsoft. They constantly change the MSN protocols to prevent people connecting to MSN on anything other than messenger. I use Slackware on my desktop, and updates to Gaim are frequent and generally contain updates for MSN. This is annoying I know, the only thing I can suggest is to try and persuade your friends to use something other than MSN! Anyone using Gaim or Trillian can opt for a number of IM networks.

Keep up the great work CoreDump!
