Mac Issues / Prevent .ds_store File Creation On Zaurus
« on: July 14, 2005, 01:25:46 am »
Quote
The following KnowledgeBase article from Apple explains how to tweak the Preferences in OS X from creating new .DS_Store files when opening folders on remote volumes mounted using SMB/CIFS, AFP, NFS, and WebDAV.
If you have not been bothered by .DS_Store files littered all over your Zaurus, then you need not bother with this fix.

Thank you for this interesting hint - the creation of "invisible" files by OS X on server volumes always was annoying to me.

I hope that this also works in OS 10.3 - I'll try it out.

Bye,

Martin

Mac Issues / Firewall-settings For Os X Internetsharing Via Usb

thanks martin.  I used those two commands and now the zaurus can ping other IPs.  however, i can't ping names.  I suppose i need to tell it where to find a dns server.  My ethernet connection does not list a DNS in that TCP/IP pane.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=88185\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

What I had to do in my SharpROM was adding in the file
/etc/resolv.conf

the line
nameserver 192.168.2.1

(with the IP-address of your router)

Hope that helps

Best regards

Martin

Mac Issues / Firewall-settings For Os X Internetsharing Via Usb

Hi,
I'm trying this too, but haven't gotten as far.
I installed the USB ethernet driver, gave my Z and my mac manual IPs (192.168.129.xxx).  I can ssh back and forth between the two, but the Z can't find the internet (ping attempts give: address unreachable).  I turned on internet sharing (of regular ethernet, to usb ethernet adapter) and my firewall is allowing port 80.
I've been hunting around and I think I might need to turn on ip forwarding on the z. (I found a page describing setting up a pppd on the usb and setting up a NAT using the iptables command which appearantly my Z doesn't have yet.)

The Z has OpenZaurus (really minimal, the person i bought it from flashed it) and the mac has 10.3 and is connected to a DSL modem.

Hi qwerty,

I never tried OpenZaurus yet, so I'm not sure if it works the same way as the SharpROM concerning networking...

Try the following:

If the Zaurus and the Mac are connected and are able to  ping each other,
open a terminal on the Z and type:

sudo route add -host 192.168.129.1 usbd0

and

sudo route add default gw 192.168.129.1

Then you should be able to ping a server on the web from the Z
(ping www.google.com ...)

Please try and give me feedback, if you were successful, and then we'll attack further steps. (I have some urgent work to do at the moment and for some weeks did not try to get further with my Z, so my memories what I tried and what helped for whatt aren't really "fresh" ;-( )

Best regards,

Martin

1. I heard that an OS called "Open Zaurus" is said to be better than the OS that comes with the 5500.  Is that true? Why? How easy is it to change to Open Zaurus and if necessary return to the original factory OS?
3. How hard is it to learn its Linux OS to someone who has not used Unix or Linux, inclujding installing new software?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=85059\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Hi whoisit,

I'm quite a Zaurus newbie myself - I got my SL5500 end of last year and am still discovering the possibilities... I'm familiar with MacOS since many years and also Windows, and thanks to MacOS X I have a (very) little basic knowledge about UNIX-based operating systems.

At the moment, I'm using on my Zaurus the newer Sharp ROM (3.13) which can be downloaded in the Downloads section of this site. I don't have deeper Linux knowledge yet, and installing applications on the Zaurus is quite easy (at least with the Sharp ROM): double klick the *.ipk installer, choose where to install (internal storage, CF-card or SD-card) and wait a little bit... No LINUX hacking necessary.

However, if there are network configurations or anything else, you maybe have to get familiar with the Terminal and some LINUX basics, but there are some great discussion forums like this here where you get help...

After all what I've learned about my "Z" in the last months, for most things there is a solution, but it often takes time to solve the problems, if you are no LINUX geek...

Mac Issues / Getting Crazy With Os X / Sl5500 In Usb-cradle!
« on: June 18, 2005, 04:01:06 am »

Just an idea: could be the cable broken or a bad contact in the cradle?

I don't think so.
1) I just plugged the cradle USB connector in the PB and switched on the Z.
The PB has its IP *.129.1 assigned, but no ping possible.

2) I restarted the PowerBook (without touching the Z, the cable, the cradle or anything),
OS X crashes (like each time when I restart),
et voilà: I can ping the Z again, no problem, as long as nobody goes to sleep or is disconnected....

Hm,
that is really strange since the driver should say that it becomes initialized.
Just an idea: could be the cable broken or a bad contact in the cradle?
Another idea: do you have any other USB drivers/devices installed - where one might conflict?

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=84630\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Hi hns,

yeah, strange it is.
the cable could be broken, but my Zaurus is nearly new and I did not use it often yet.
However (at least I believe it is like that and I'll try it out), when I do not touch the Z at all and restart the PowerBook, the connection works again, so in my opinion at contact problem can't be the reason, but I'll try it out.

Concerning conflicting USB drivers:
I'm using the following USB components:
- mouse Logitech Notebook mouse optical plus+
  -> Logitech Control Center installed
- scanner Canon LiDE 30 (driver installed)
- USB stick/ Yedata USB floppy drive
  -> no extra driver necessary

I could try to create a new user, copy the network prefs from my account and leave out all those drivers (if they are not installed in the System Library, which I fear might be the case..)

Would there be any other way to have a look at the USB "action" while plugging in?

Best regards

Martin

Windows Issues / Sync Sl5500 <> Outlook Xp With Intellisync Ov. Lan
« on: June 16, 2005, 05:34:05 pm »
Quote
When you initialise a sync with the zaurus it will respond to the request but will only talk to x.x.x.1 IP where x.x.x is the first 3 octets of its address. So in order to sync via WiFi or LAN I had t set my PC to x.x.x.1 and my Z to x.x.x.2 and everything worked great afterward. I can even use the backup utility over WiFi.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=84560\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Hi technojunkie,

thanks for your answer.
As I mentioned, the Apple PowerBook has already this IP numer *.1 for the USB-TCP/IP-connection which shall be used for connecting the Zaurus to the LAN.

Would'nt it be a problem for the Z, if the PC as well as the PowerBook have the same IP?

ping: sendto: Host is down

The host down means that the routing is no longer active (and there is no alternative path). Usually, if I switch on Airport it times out - if not the host down comes.

Did you try to switch off the Z for approx. 2 seconds and switch on again - while being in the cradle? This might reset the USB controller of the Z. Plugging and replugging the Z is not the same procedure.
-- hns
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=84169\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Dear hns,

thanks for your hints - unfortunately, none of them does help. :-(

That's what I did:

I came home, woke up the PowerBook from its sleep, put the Z in the cradle, turned the Z on.

I hear some harddisk spinning on the PowerBook, but no reaction concerning the TCP/IP connection (en2 "inaktiv").

I switched off the Z, waited some seconds, switched it on again.
No reaction.

I switched Airport off, tried the same procedure (Z off/wait/on) - no success. :-(

Neither opening another terminal window for pinging nor even quitting the terminal app and reopening it made it possible to ping the Z. :-(

Any other ideas?

Best regards

Martin

You probably need to open port 80 on your powerbook's firewall. Open
System Preferences->  Sharing
On the "Services" tab (the first one), enable personal web sharing. This is for OS X.2, I don't know if it works on later versions.

Thanks! Now I can browse web pages on the Z with the Firewall enabled.

I am currently an SL-5600 Zaurus user.

Whenever I have connection problem with my Mac, I reinitialize the network conneciton by activating the PC Link utilities, selecting "USB-IO  (Debault) " option undder Connection and quitting  the application.

Actiavte the PC Link utilities one more time, select "USB-TCP/IP(Advanced)" option undder Connection and quit the application.

I hope the above will help.

Hi freizugheit,

thanks for your hint - unfortunately it doesn't work for me.

It only changes the behaviour of the Zaurus from absolutely no reaction while pinging it to:

ping: sendto: Host is down
ping: wrote 192.168.129.201 64 chars, ret=-1

Hi,

I'm trying to connect my Zaurus SL5500 (Sharp ROM 3.13 + Cacko Kernel patch) to the WWW and for the first step I want to use the USB/TCP-IP connection.

My Powerbook is connected via WLAN to our DSL router, I have internet sharing enabled on the PB and the Z can ping IP-numbers and urls like www.avm.de successfully.

However, the Z can only load a web page in Opera, if I disable the firewall on the PowerBook (OS 10.3.9).
I don't want to disable it completely - does anybody know how I have to configure the firewall for getting Opera on the Z working?

Best regards

Hi hns,

thanks for your "just in time" answer.

I would be glad if those driver problems could be solved - I don't plan to switch to OS 10.4 right now, so I will need to get along with 10.3.9 and my Z.

Would it make sense to install Version 0.3 with OS 10.3.9 or is it sure that this won't work?

Best regards

I nearly got everything working to sync my Zaurus SL-5500 (Sharp ROM 3.13 + Cacko Kernel Patch) with my Apple PowerBook G4 12", but there is one annoying problem:

When I put the PowerBook and/or the Zaurus to sleep, I'm not able to reestablish the USB/TCP-IP connection afterwards - no more ping in any direction!

The PowerBook is running OS 10.3.9, the Cradle is connected to one of the internal USB-ports (no hub!). The PowerBook is connected to my DSL-WLAN-router via Airport.

The PB has IP 192.168.129.1, the Z has *.201

If I try to shut down Airport and plug out/in the Z again, but it doesn't change anything,
the system log says and there is no pinging possible:

After a restart of the PowerBook, it works again (till the next sleep phase), but this is not really fun, because at (nearly) each shutdown/restart/logoff of the PowerBook a Kernel Panic occurs, which seems to be caused by problems with Apple's internal USB drivers.. :-(
I contacted Andreas, the author of the Z-USB-driver, but so far he didn't find a solution for the Kernel-Panic-problem.

Can anyone tell me how to reactivate the USB/TCP-IP connection after sleep without restarting the Powerbook?
Any terminal hack is welcome!

Windows Issues / Sync Sl5500 <> Outlook Xp With Intellisync Ov. Lan
« on: June 11, 2005, 03:27:32 am »
Hi,

I've got a sync problem with the following configuration:

1) A Zaurus SL5500 with SharpROM 3.13 + Cacko Kernel Patch
IP 192.168.129.201

connected via USB-Cradle to

2) Apple PowerBook G4, MacOS 10.3.9
IP 192.168.129.1
IP 192.168.2.4 (WLAN)
sharing of the LAN-connection with the USB/TCP-IP connection enabled

connected via WLAN to
3) DSL/WLAN-router T-Sinus 154 DSL
IP 192.168.2.1

connected via Ethernet cable to
4) PC with Windows XP
IP 192.168.2.2
Intellisync installed

I was able to sync the PIM-data on Z and PC, if I connect the Zaurus-USB-cradle directly to the PC.
Normally, however, the Z shall be connected to my Apple PowerBook and not to the PC,
so the question is if I can do an IntelliSync via the network.

What I had to do:
on Z: route add default gw 192.168.129.1
on PC: route add 192.168.129.201 mask 255.255.255.255 192.168.2.4 metric 1 (is 1 correct??)

What I am able to do right now:
from the Z:
ping the PowerBook, the Router and the PC

from the PC:
ping the PowerBook, the router and the Z
establish a smb-connection to the Z (192.168.129.201) and access Internal storage, CF- and SD-card on the Z

What I'm not able to do yet:
Run Intellisync from the PC to sync Outlook XP with the PIM-apps on the Z

can anyone tell me how to configure that?

Thanks in advance
best regards

Martin
