Zaurus - pdaXrom / Important Update...

There are a lot of things that should be changed.... from documentation to collaborative work tools.
Why here it is so different from the other great Open Source project??
I know that in other environment where they weren't open enough a fork happened.....
Is forking project a blasphemy?

Here is what I did, which should work fine on a 6000 also asuming there is squashfs support.

KDE lite 3.5.0 Installation procedure for non-flash install
#1 Install the symlinks package to the main memory
#2 Copy kde_lite_3.5.0.squashfs to storage media (SD, CF, HDD)
#3 ln -s /mnt/card/kde_lite_3.5.0.squashfs /usr/lib/kde/ (asuming file on SD card)
#4 ln -s /usr/lib/kde/bin/startkde ~/.xinitrc (Use mv ~./.xinitrc ~./.xinitrc.old to restore matchbox if necessary)
#5 startx

Ok... It works and it is fast enough...  starting konqueror require 15 sec with google set as homepage and usingo 32MB of SD swapfile.

Rotating doesn't work, Using the pdaxrom menu applet has no effect.
Running xrandr it says
#xrandr
SZ: Pixels Physical Refresh
*0 480 x 640 (163mm x 217 mm)
1 240 x 320 (163mm x 217 mm)

when xrandr -0 1 to landscape
the screen rotate but its width is 480 (as in portrait, it should be 640) and its length is more then 480 and the bottom of the screen is cut....

anyone has suggestions??

and what do u do for right clicking???

Probably there are at least two issues to resolve:
1. Capability to mount squashfs in 6000 (dunno if pgas' Squashfs Modules And Utils For 1000/3100 will do here)
2. Screen rotation problem: as Putherguy reports in #83, xrandr has strange output: 320 x 240 for orientation 1 (portrait).  Have taken a briet look at xrandr, rotate and the related scripts but cannot figure out how to change that.  Hope some experts here can enlighten us. 
[Edited: In Screen Resize & Rotate (KRandRTray), there are also only options for 640 x 480 and 320 x 240. ]

Yes ok, I think that there are some way to solve the problems of the lack of PIM apps AFTER installing them, not in a just flashed ROM,

BTW the other issue in my first post, except the PIM apps, seems to be specifically related to pdaXrom...
I know that clamsheel users often don't have many of these problems, but in view of a stable release I really don't feel well with all these pestering things...
Note that many users came from linux but are simply users, not guru or geeks...
It would be great to have all the basic hardware and software features working well.

Why don't solve common issues rather than adding other (cool!) sci-fi tools :-) ?

Hi !

This is not a proper feature request or similar, I simply point out impressions from me and my colleagues (who never tried before pdaxrom) after some months using pdaxrom on a SL-6000

First of all I have to emphasize the astonishing capabilities of this environment...   A pocket pc user simply can't  imagine what is possible to do with Z and pdaxrom. But I avoid now to mention the specific peculiarities, all people on this forum know these distinctive features.

I know that 6000 users are a minority group but maybe some considerations could be useful also for clamshell users.

Our humble impressions are summarized:

-"PDA-like" use:
Actually pdaXrom is the most advanced system among all the rom available for Zaurus but it is not the most comfortable for daily "PDA-like" use. Calendar, addressbook, notes, voice recorder, etc are available but not so smart like on other systems/ROM.  I'd like to resume very quickly the PDA,  having these applications promptly available with their core features working well and in a simple way. For example from this point of view Sharp ROM is cool, it's easy to use, syncing, and with all basic features working well (alarm, writing, notes, etc). Also OZ is cool except some problems never solved.
I don't have much time to search a difficult-to-find solution for comon problem, it would be great to have them available after flashing and have more common documentation.

Please tell me what you think are the best solutions to this problems or if they are just solved but not available, on the nail, in a just flashed Z.




BTW I write now a list of wishes/opinions from the point of view of new users coming to pdaXrom with Matchbox (thanks to my colleagues for trying and commenting a new flashed pdaxrom).

My colleagues said:



-Resuming/suspending is slow!!!

-Missing good calendar/contact/etc  apps. kdepim, ka/pi, ko/pi,  have many problems, easy-syncing, alarms, time-to-load, too much "big" for the Z's LCD etc

-On 6000 all applications are "thinked" in landscape mode. Windows go out of border, resizing, maximize and moving windows is slow and heavy. (Xfce is better from this point of view)

-Never found a simple solutions to right click. I'd like simple "press&hold" the stylus but it doesn't work. Applet, keymapping and other things seems uncomfortable.

-Missing a smart file browser

-Never found a simple solutions to mapping all the keys on the 6000. the functions keys, the REC keys, rotate/lighting key etc. The standard mapping like in Sharp ROM would be great, with the FN key working correctly

-The software keyboard is not cool as the pop-up one of opie.

-Many settings tools and applet doesn't work properly (wireless, suspend etc)

-Sending/receiving file through IR fails when I tried with my 6000 (works with sharp rom)

-Bluetooth GUI tools would be great

-After rotating it wold be useful to have the arrow keys to also rotate, to scroll down a web page I have to press"left" (down in portrait)



I would like this post to help users and developers to build a stable and working system which could bring many other Z user to flash pdaXrom....

And, finally, many thanks to pdaXrom developers.

It could be a good solution to have donating system also related to feature requests...

I don't understand if hostap driver is available for the internal wireless interface...
iwconfig commands don't work even now, I'd like to know if it's a common  and well-known bug or if it's related to the standard driver

any suggestion?

Hi !

I didn't have much time recently but now I've tried the Kphone ipk you told me.
It works fine for me. I've created a SIP account on Asterisk as proxy server and then I make and receive  calls from a SIP hard-phone without problems.
The quality is good enough (I tried G.711 on my LAN) and the SIP messaging seems correct. I can also hold and transfer calls.
The main issue is that the ring doesn't work. I'd like to hear the buzzer when call arrive but I don't know how enable it.  
Setting it in the config menu has no effect.
Any suggestion?

The older one wouldn't install so I untarred the package and did it manually. The latter one installed fine and is much better as it allows multiple accounts.

I tried some different ipk for kphone-pi 1.0.0 but they seem to work but instead they don't install...
Can you tell me where you find your IPK or post a link? it was a link for sourceforge or it was posted on an oesf thread?

Any others and is anyone using kphone successfully on a 6000 with pdaXrom adn a real SIP account?

I need a SIP phone on my 6000 too,
I tried kphone-pi from the unstable feed,  I can register myself on my own SIP server and make SIP request to other phone. SIP messaging seems work and the remote phone ring correctly, I can dial, hanging up, holding, forwarding etc but audio doesn't work. I set the audio device to /dev/audio/dsp but nothing.
On the PBX i see a lot of RTP error.
If I have spare time I'll try to recompile kphone or another SIP phone. Also a IAX client should be fine!

Did your kphone work wid FWD? What ipk have you used? And what settings?

I can't  use the iwconfig command. I'd like for example to set the monitor mode, ad hoc mode etc...

FYI - I've been trying a version of kphone, and it also complained about that
library.  I saw I had the file named "libstdcxx_5.0.5_armv5tel.ipk" from an earlier
feed, and I installed that which allows kphone to run.  Note that I am able to do
an echo test OK, but have never got the FWD server to hear my name and/or the
pound sign, but I don't know it's related to the C++ lib above.

In any case I would try installing libstdcxx_5.0.5_armv5tel.ipk from the earlier
feed, and see what happens...

Hi John,
which version oh kphone have you tried?  Kphone-pi?  I tried the one on the unstable feed, Install seems fine and Kphone icon appears on desktop but it doesn't work and in shell I can't find the executable to try launch by command line!

To see more than one device you'll probably need to recompile the kernel with "multiple luns per device".

I have a 6 in 1 usb-reader but it only ever sees one card at a time on the zaurus

Try rmmodding usb-storage as it controlss the scsi drivers

I can only access the SD cards but not the HD, also when there are no SD inserted. I will try to use another external only-HD unit to check if this is the problem.

I think it isn't a power problem because the unit has its own battery which is used when it can't use USB power. I didn't try the unit under sharp rom because I bought it after flashing to pdaxrom.

Hi!

I added tosa.xmodmap in /etc/X11/kb/

You should put the file in that directory and then, in your .xinitrc, change the line refering to corgi.xmodmap to tosa.modmap.

In fvwm-pdaxrom by Zumi it works without changes.
