OpenZaurus/Opie/Qtopia / Konsole For Oz

It would seem that rebooting the Zaurus (a couple times?) rectifies this problem.

You might find the other terminal app tries writing its settings to the same file. Although you've got it fixed now, I'd do an 'ls -a ~/' and see if you can work out which is the file in question.

The file you're thinking of is probably ~/Settings/opie-console-profiles.conf. That was the only file revealed by "find ~ -name *kons*" and "find ~ -name *cons*". It reads as follows:

Now, does anyone have that file from a clean installation of opie-console so I can do a diff? Thanks.

Fair enough. Consider it done.

You're right that the line-wrap option is involved. If I disable line-wrap opie-console stays in its window, but - as you'd expect - long commands are more difficult this way.

Building on what you suggested I found that if I disable line-wrap, rotate the screen (from the Opie Menu), rotate it back, and the enable line-wrap, I get the best of both worlds (line-wrap & a proper window). But it is a nuisance having to do that when, before, it "just worked". Still, thanks for the work-around.

Edit: Turns out you can just rotate the display and rotate it back, without disabling and re-enabling line-wrap. It's as if the window's dimensions are set incorrectly the first time, but not subsequently.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Opie-embeddedconsole Breaks Opie-console
« on: January 01, 2006, 04:34:54 pm »
I recently tried opie-embeddedconsole on my SL-5500 (OZ3.5.3) in an effort to work around a problem I was having with opie-console. ( https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=16813&hl= )

Unfortunately, installing opie-embeddedconsole seems to have broken opie-console. Basically, opie-console's window now extends beneath the opie taskbar, so once I've filled the page with text, I loose sight of the last line (normally the command prompt).

Advice on fixing opie-console would be appreciated. Ideally I'd like to have both programs installed and working. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the ideas guys.

I've tried changing the fonts without success, although I've yet to download new fonts. I will try that soon and report my success. But first:

I tried opie-embeddedconsole. It doesn't fix this problem but it's a perfectly acceptable console <i> except that </i> installing it seems to have broken opie-console. Basically, opie-console's window now extends beneath the opie taskbar, so once I've filled the page with text, I loose sight of the last line (normally the command prompt). If anyone reading this thread has seen this before, I'd appreciate suggestions.

Hi all,

I'm looking for an alternative to opie-console that can handle special characters like the Euro symbol.

I have heard that you can type this symbol (€) with Fn, Shft+4 but that doesn't work on my (US) SL-5500 running OZ 3.5.3 (with the new kernel ... r21?). Nor does Fn, Shft+3 work for the British pound symbol.

I can enter a pound symbol from the handwriting screen (although the Euro symbol doesn't seem to be available ... nor is Yen), but opie-console just displays it as a box.

So, what other consoles (eg konsole) are available, where can I find them, and how can I enter more currency characters?

Thanks.

Sharp ROMs / Sharp Rom For Uk Zaurus
« on: December 23, 2005, 03:17:20 pm »
I have a US SL5500 running OZ3.5.3. I'd also like to be able to produce a Euro symbol on my zaurus but Fn+Shft+4 does nothing.

Interestingly, Fn+Space also does nothing ... it certainly doesn't bring up a keyboard. However, Fn+Shft+, does work to bring up a [, and Fn+Shft+p brings up a ].

Have other US users noticed this behavior? What about 3.5.4 users?

If this isn't a problem in 3.5.4, I'd be willing to upgrade, but on that front I could use some advice. Obviously I'd have to reinstall anything I'd installed to ROM (like extra timezones), but what about RAM? And what about my /home folder, which is exported to an SD card?

Thanks!

Security and Networking / Proxy Settings For Opera On Oz 3.5.3
« on: November 17, 2005, 06:52:04 am »
Hi all,

I'm using Opera on my SL-5500 running OZ3.5.3. I'm not certain of the opera version, but /opt/QtPalmtop/opera/doc/opera.html suggests it's Version 6.0, Build 342.

In any event, there's no option to set a proxy in Opera's GUI prefs. I've trawled these posts for clues but without luck. For example, there is no option to configure proxies under Network on the OZ's Settings tab. "export http_proxy=http://whatever.com:8080" didn't help, and neither did "export HTTP_PROXY=..." I've looked for, but have not found, a .conf file where I can define a proxy.

I'd greatly appreciate a solution, as I cannot browse on one of my work networks without one.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Ipkg.conf
« on: August 11, 2005, 05:59:12 am »
Hi all,

In early July I tried, like many here, to get the new kernel to work on my SL-5500, without success. Thus, I was delighted to find fuller instructions have recently been supplied. I've quoted them below:

Quote
1. install OZ 3.5.3 with default kernel (may be skipped if you already have 3.5.3)
2. add upgrades/collie into ipkg.conf
3. run ipkg update;ipkg upgrade to get r21 kernel modules installed
4. copy r21 kernel from “upgrades/collie” into CF card and flash it (ONLY kernel)
5. boot Zaurus and be happy user of OZ 3.5.3 with r21 kernel

I've always installed packages by putting them on a CF card and then running:
Code: [Select]
ipkg add [-d wherever] whatever.ipk
ipkg-linkl whatever-shortname

I was never clear on using the feed, for which I'd seen little documentation, and I've avoided the GUI installer as well. But I take it, from the above, that now I do need to know how the feed works. If someone is feeling sympathetic, could they walk me through the process outlined above so I can upgrade my kernel?

Alternitively - maybe better from my perspective - can someone advise me on how to determine which kernel modules I will need (ie am currently running), and how to upgrade them using only the command line so I can continue to use only the command line and shun the feed? If kernel modules can be updated like normal packages, I assume I can do this with "ipkg -l" to find current modules, then my usual method for each kernel-module I'm currently using for which there is an update (installing them to ROM I presume), and finally flashing the new kernel from CF.

Thanks!

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / collie and kernel from 3.5.3 upgrades
« on: July 16, 2005, 12:14:58 pm »

The latest collie kernel in 3.5.3 upgrades does not boot. It flashs however boot hangs on the second boot line. I tried the cycle twice of installing the upgrade and then re-installing the origenal. Each time the upgrade failed and each time the origenal rebooted.

Is there a fix for this? Has anyone else seen this?

Thanks,
Dan

Dan,

I don't know of a fix, but I've had a similar - if not an identical - experience.

I was basically happy with the way I'd set up my SL-5500, so I copied the new (r21) zImage file to zImage on the root of a CF card that I've flashed from in the past. I did not place an initrd.bin file there. I flashed, but the boot hung on the second line.

No amount of patience (or keyboard intervention) made any difference, and eventually I flashed back to the older 3.5.3 kernel (the one with the power issues). At least my configuration and RAM-data survived this little experiment.

If you find a solution, let me know.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Openzaurus 3.5.3 Firewall Solutions
« on: June 14, 2005, 10:21:58 am »
I've noticed iptables in the OZ feed, and I'm tempted to install it. I've never designed a firewall for an embedded environment before, however, so I'd like to see what others have come up with.

Has anyone out there written an iptables script for their Zaurus? If so, please post it!

Also, how have you implemented it? Do you just drop the script into /etc/init.d with links in /etc/rc[2-5].d?

You need to save & run the script from this message (read the whole thread for more info) & set up a desktop shortcut for it to make it painless to run. HTH

I remember that thread, I even contributed very late to it.

I just restored the /etc/device_table as it is breaks more than it fixes, and I will just have to remember to suspend from the menu.

Foolishly, I seem to have deleted the /etc/device_table apm line, instead of commenting it out. I don't want to go through a complete reinstall to find out what it said, so could someone please post the line here? Thanks.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Openzaurus 3.5.3 Pre-release

It would be nice if 3.5.3-final could be the first 3.5.x release to include working timezones...   (i.e. New York and LA should be 3 hours apart and they should be 5 and 8 hours behind London respectively)

This snapshot also fails in that respect.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=71222\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Also on the subject of the missing timezones:
You can install the timezone packages to root with:
   ipkg install timezones-africa_1.2.0-r1_arm.ipk (etc.)
Even so, at least one city (Toronto, Canada) doesn't have proper data. To fix problems like this you can:
   cd /usr/share/zoneinfo/America
   ln -s Montreal Toronto
However, since existing cities in the same timezone may have different filesizes, I don't know how good a solution this is.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Pin Password And Power Issue In Oz 3.5.3
« on: May 07, 2005, 06:15:15 pm »
I've installed opie-securityplugin-pin_1.2.0-r0_arm.ipk on a SL5500 running Openzaurus 3.5.3. Unfortunately, now, when the device tries to suspend (either because I tell it to or because it's been idle and on battery), after a moment's apparent suspension (the screen goes blank and dark) the PIN panel pops up, and the device stays on unless it is manually suspended by holding the cancel button. This is not good because of the risks to battery life. Has anyone got a work around (preferably other than "don't use this plugin", but that will do if you can name a good alternative).
