I have to resolve that eth0<>wlan0 situation in some way....

orinoco_cs driver (eth0) does not support WPA at all
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=128957\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Thanks Hrw for the quick answer.
If I understand you right, the DCF-660W was before running by another driver and know switched to the orinoco_cs driver. If so, it should be possible to switch it back to the old driver. Just because before (OZ RC2) it works fine for me.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / New: Hentges Rom Rc For Akita
« on: May 30, 2006, 09:57:04 am »
Hi,

did anyone give Hentges-Aktia-OPIE and WPA a try ?

Before I used OZ (I think it was the second RC) now I would like to try the hentges ROM

I downloaded hentges-opie-image-de-akita_T1-RC4.tar.gz

Flash was no problem and it runs great.

Now I started to to set-up my WPA WLAN connection, in the same way I did in OZ. (used http://openzaurus.berlios.de/HowTos/roamin...wpa_supplicant)

In OZ it works fine but I run in trouble with the hentges ROM.

Just a few points I noticed.

Under OZ, the card was linked to wlan0 in hentges to eth0.
The card is somewhat strange detected "prismI" before AFAIK it was detected as DCF-660W

the wpa_supplicant did not work in hentges.
the command wpa_supplicant -ieth0 -Dhostap -c \etc\wpa_supplicant.conf pops up that the card or kernel is not able to run ... ???? I will paste the exact log if nececarry.

I belive but I can not proof it without flashing the old OZ again, that there are different versions of WPA_Supplicant ?

Can anybody tell  me wether he was successful with WPA under the last hentges release

Thanks

Hardware Mods / Stuffing Serial Bluetooth Module Inside C1k Casing
« on: March 08, 2006, 06:09:37 am »
Hi,

Just followed the thread recently and it sounds quite interesting. I'm not very deeply involved in the hardware of the Z.  Therefore, I just have some question to understand and hopefully further help in development.

1. Is there enough space to add beside the WLAN and Bluetooth-Card an additional memory stick? I really like to see my C1000 with a internal storage of more then 1 GB.

2. Did you plane to use one USB port of the Zaurus with an additional USB-Hub to connect all these devices with the Zaurus or will you use all USB ports of the Zaurus itself? Did you manage to find out for what the ports (which are used for USB) of the Zaurus are used instead (since they have normally double or triple functions)

3. Any idea about the overall power consumption? One problem which maybe even leads Sharp to include no internal devices is the ratio between weight, size / battery life. It is still a PDA and should fit size and weight criteria. Our Zaurus devices are already on the upper limit in this case. Small a light device requires small batteries and therefore low power consumption for useable battery lifetimes. No space (in terms of electricity) for additional gadgets?!?

Personal I believe that the battery of the Zaurus is already somewhat too small in capacity for a PDA. Intensive use with sometimes WLAN force me to recharge the Zaurus every second day - sometimes daily. It would cut the fun if I have to charge it twice a day because of internal Bluetooth, WLAN etc. Therefore, if we like to integrate more devices, we should check whether we have to tune the power unit as well.

4. For the heating effects of the power regulator (?). As far as I remember the pictures correctly, there was still little space. Maybe it helps to use a little copper sheet together with some thermal grease.

I will try to support this project. Unfortunately I have just one Zaurus which I daily use. Disassembling this unit is not really what I want.
However, I'm sitting here in a lab with a huge bunch of electronic tools and devices. Even a PCB-milling-drilling-whatever machine can be used here.
Therefore, if I can assist you, I will try my best.

Best regards

Software / Kino2 Won't Stream From Gnump3d But Mplayer Does!?
« on: January 28, 2006, 06:48:33 pm »
Hello,

just set up gnump3d on my Linux-Home-Server. It seems to run quit perfect. I can access to it form either Linux and Windows boxes.

However, for sure I like to use my Zaurus....

But it won't work. Fiddle around and thats the results.
Running Cacko on a C1000:

First I run in trouble since Opera likes to download instead of parsing the m3u-list.
Fixed that in Opera-Preferences->File types. I changed the MIME-type for audio/mpeg and add a MIME-type audio/x-mpequrl with the file extension m3u.
Action was changed resp. set to "Open with another application" and for the application I typed kino2.

Didn't work....

Kino2 pops up starts to read (play-button changed to break-button) and stop.
I checked Kino2 preference and set up the preference for streaming used 100Kb later 1024 Kb cache and different bandwith (I didn't know which unit it is asking for)

Didn't work....

I played around with mplayer directly and after some time I found that the following command does the job

Code: [Select]
mplayer -nortc -playlist http://myserver:myportnumber/thelinktotheplaylist
After that mplayer starts to stream the file from the server and plays it

O.K. ... so far I added both options to the Kino2 preference since I thougth these are missing there.

Didn't work....

I added the debug output on the preference settings of kino2 and run kino2 from the console.
Everthing seems to look fine. The initial playlist was copied from the server etc. However, all "tests whether it is winamp-playlist, test whether it is m3u-playlist", etc. seems to fail.
I thougth this happens because I just clicked on a singel file instead of a complete playlist. (Nevertheless, gnump3d will create a .m3u-file also for a single file).
Therefore I tried a larger playlist. Now kino2 starts after streaming the playlist to connect to the server again and again but without any progress.
Code: [Select]
...
initial output
cache 100Kb
connecting to server
cache 100Kb
connecting to server
cache 100Kb
connecting to server
cache 100Kb
connecting to server
...
infinity loop, at least for infinity <= 10 min.

I added mplayer directly to the MIME-type-action of Opera and it start to play. However I cannot stop it or adjust it easily.

Does someone know at which knob I have to turn to use Kino2 for streaming from gnump3d ?

It seems to be a little problem since mplayer itself does the job. Therefore I assume, Server, Network and Zaurus are O.K.
mplayer is O.K.
Just either Kino2 as GUI or my brain needs some inital aid .

Thanks for help

Sharp ROMs / Wifi Problem With Cacko 1.23 Lite
« on: December 01, 2005, 06:34:30 pm »
Just very short hint.... but maybe it help

Deactivate autoconnection I run sometimes in trouble with that.
If you use already 2 profiles you might like to try to deactivate your DHCP-sever at home. For a standard home net DHCP is not really necessary. Use static IP gives you in my opinion much advantage about the controlling of your network. For sure you cannot change your work-net but you might like to change your home-net.

Just my two cents

Hi,

the DCF-660W works fine on my C1000 even with WPA
It get recognize directly after insert the card.

Can you post the output of dmesg directly after insert the card

It should work with Cacko 1.23 and the C3100

Software / Kde-pim And Groupware Sync
« on: November 25, 2005, 09:15:45 am »
Hello,

Sorry if this question was asked already. However, if so I wasn't clever enough to find it.

As far as I understand the sync-procedure from KDE-pim it could sync with a remote file from somewhere. Furthermore, it can read and write iCal and vCard-files.

The question:

Does KDE-Pim really a sync ?
I mean sync implicit that the KDE-Pim import a file, synchronise the data with the internal data and write a file back to allow the other side to import the new information from the Zaurus side.

The background:

At work we are currently thinking about the installation of a groupware software. However, we all have different flavours of PDAs (PPCs, Palms and one Zaurus  )
This groupware software should be able to sync with all these PDAs. I found some solutions for Palm and PPC. However, as I expected I didn't found something for the Zaurus. If the KDE-Pim is able to sync with remote files it should be very easy to write a little PHP-script, which first create files for the Zaurus and then import files with all new information (addresses, dates) created by the Zaurus for the groupware.

The cry for help:

Is there anyone here who has some experience with groupware software and PDA sync ?
Can anyone recommend a open source groupware. There are different flavours on sourceforge but I can not decide which one will be the best for PDA sync.

Thanks for helping me out

Sharp ROMs / Wpa-psk With Cacko Rom

Hey Anton if you are reading this, is this piece of source code available?

No
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=104535\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

O.K. thats a more then a clear anwer
Thought all this is open source but it seems Sharp is not playing the full game.
I saw a GUI for WPA configuration on the website of the WPA_Supplicant. Does someone now whether we can port this to Zaurus?

The idea is simple. When I use my Zaurus I need a good working machine (that's the reason I love cacko). If I use it I'm on the rush and I won't fiddle about conf files and settings just to enter temporary a WLAN connection. Therefore, I would like to have a very simple GUI, which helps me to setup the correct WLAN settings.

Also, anyone successfully connected to a WPA-Enterprise network (MSCHAPV2, PEAP, TKIP) could you possibly post your wpa_supplicant.conf? Thanks!
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=104404\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Hi, I tried to connect to my work access point which is using some strange Cisco LEAP stuff. However, until now I wasn't successful (just tried once for 15 min.) If I find time I will try again.
If you have a look at the examples of the wpa_supplicant.conf it should work since all the necessary features are supported.
I assume it is just a little bit trial and error.

Furthermore, if (I believe it should be) the source code of the original SHARP ROM is available maybe someone can add simple WPA button. This should avoid the manual step to change the /etc/pcmcia/wlan-ng.opts file, which you have to do every time you change the settings in the GUI.

For sure an additional WPA-tab would be even better, to create the settings directly in this GUI.

Hey Anton if you are reading this, is this piece of source code available and how much work could it be to include such a tab?
If you can point me the direction I will try my best to do this.

Greetings

Sharp ROMs / Wpa-psk With Cacko Rom
« on: November 20, 2005, 08:28:01 pm »
Hi everyone,

Sorry for my late response. I was somehow busy the last days.
I promised a How-to but have very little time in the moment.
Therefore, I write here just some quick and dirty hints.

1. Find out whether your network card is correct installed after insertion.
The Zaurus should show the card correctly after insertion if you are unsure, please type
dmesg inside the konsole-window. There you should see what's going on with your WLAN card.

2. If your WLAN cards works correct, create a new network connection under Settings->Network. Go tab by tab. Add a suitable name at first. Type the SSID of your WLAN-network instead of Non-Spec ESS-ID. Do not add WEP settings. All other information should be the same as for your "normal" computers. Mostly you only have to set-up TCP/IP and DNS (ignore all other tabs). Again choose the same settings as for your other machines (if you have to define a IP address of course choose a new resp. free one for your Zaurus)

3. Save the settings.

4. Follow the steps described here already to change the two files.
Add WPA=y at /etc/pcmcia/wlan-ng.opts
You have to search for the setup which you created before under the network settings. The Keyword INFO= will be the same as the name you choose for your network.

MOST IMPORTANT: Never use the GUI again to change settings for this network from now on, since it will overwrite your WPA=y settings. If you do so (e.g. if you change your IP address with the help of the GUI) you have to repeat step 4 again !!!!!
You can use the midnight commander (or any other text-editor) to change the file.
However, you require root privileges. Therefore use su or sudo

Code: [Select]
sudo mc -e /etc/pcmcia/wlan-ng.opts
# start the midnight commander in root mode and open the file.
# To use the menu-keys you have to press ALT-Number. ALT is the second Japanese character beside Ctrl.
# Add
WPA=y
# Inside your network connection

This should result in
Code: [Select]
qpewlan0,*,*,*)
         INFO='My Network name'
         ..... # more settings about your network
         WPA=y # this line you have to add by hand
        ;;

5. Edit /etc/wpa-supplicant.conf. This file contains a good set of examples. Don't worry about all the preface. Just look at the example and try the one which is as close as possible to your WLAN settings. You can check your WLAN Settings on your access point or on one of the "big" computers in your network.

The easiest way to create a hopefully working configuration file is the following:
type
Code: [Select]
cp /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf.bak
# just to backup your old file.
sudo wpa_passphrase your_ssid your_password > /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
# this generates a new file with the minimum-settings. In addtion your password is not written in clear-text which increases security.
more /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
# should result in
network={
               ssid="your_ssid"
               psk="your decrypted password in hex-code"
}

If your access point does not broadcast the SSID (check your access point settings) you might have to add the following line to your wpa_supplicant.conf file.

Code: [Select]
network={
               ssid="your_ssid"
               psk="your decrypted password in hex-code"
               scan_ssid=1
}
This tells your WLAN-card to communicate with your "hidden" access point even if it can not receive any SSID information at the beginning.

After that reject and insert your WLAN-card again. Now you should be able to connect to your access point. If not check again both files. The standard settings for the wpa_supplicant.conf file will try to use all possible combinations, unless we define a specific one. Therefore, I assume less is more in this case. That means do not try to make to many settings at once. E.g. for me the above example works fine for a WPA-TKIP connection with PSK decryption even without defining specific TKIP and PSK.

I hope all this helps. Furthermore, many many thanks to Anton again, who make all this possible. Thanks Anton. Remember, if you are successful and happy to access the Internet with your Zaurus, go to

Anton's Webpage

and click on the "Make a Donation" button to show him that his work is valuable and important for you. Please consider, that for other PDA-Platforms e.g. under Microsoft-OS you have to pay horrible amounts even for stupid little apps which allow you to connect your access point by WLAN. You can decide how much you like to support open source operated PDAs by place a donation to Anton. This will give him more time for further development.

Two little hints at the end. It seems some WLAN cards need a firmware update before there are able to run in WPA mode. Check this forum for more information.
For me the automatic connection is not useful and sometimes brings me in trouble. I switched it off, since I like to decide whether I will be online or not.  Power consumption of a unused but online WLAN connection is a second argument for manual connection.

Bye

Sharp ROMs / Wpa-psk With Cacko Rom
« on: November 02, 2005, 08:17:21 am »
Hi Terry, Hi Maslovsky,

working on exactly the same stuff.

I followed the FAQ and setup both config files.
I'm using a DLINK DCF-660 card.
However I was unlucky up to know.

I just like to get WPA-PSK but it will not connect. Furthermore I also searched for a log file to see what really happens. But I didn't find something up to now.

I will try today in the evening some more ideas. If I now somethink new I will let you know.

Mybe someone (if I'm successfull I will do)  can startup to create a more detailed How-to for this topic since WAP is running off and more and more people like to use WPA. If we are lucky we find a programmer for a little GUI for all the noobs like me.

Greetings

First many many thanks to maslovsky and his team.

Flashed yesterday and everything looks quite good.

Maybe someone can open a new thread for bugs and how-to about the new cacko ?!

I'm just wondering if someone here was able to use WPA-PSK with the new release already.
Played yesterday night several hours but wasn't successfull.
...
I just found already a post here.....
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=10699
I will follow up there

Thanks again
