Gemini PDA - Android / New firmware for Gemini coming
« on: April 26, 2020, 02:12:27 pm »

According to a comment from planet on their Indiegogo-page for the Gemini there will be another firmware update for the Gemini:

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/gemini-p...ce--2#/comments

(It is given as a response to a comment from Alex S., which is more or less on the top of the comments page at the time of writing this.)

So it seems they haven't completely abandoned the Gemini yet!!

Well, I am not holding my breath.  It seems Planet did not totally understand the process with updates for Androids.  I understand they got better with the Cosmo, and I hope the latest one will not have an issue, the the Gemini has gotten like two(?) updates since I got mine from the original Kickstarter.  I really like mine, and I use it almost daily (not my daily driver phone, but I do use it a lot), but I am going to have to abandon Android on it before long due to the lack of updates on that side.

The good news is I understand that the Linux and Sailfish ROMs have gotten most of the bugs worked out and are good solid choices.

So, what about those of us who have the HDMI cable already.  Do we get this as well?

Gemini PDA - Linux / Issues trying to flash under Ubuntu 18.10
« on: February 17, 2019, 07:13:21 pm »
Hello, all.

I am trying to flash my Gemini to dual boot.  I had this working under 18.04 a while back, but I am revisiting it again.

I have followed the instructions at the Planet's support web site, but when I get to the part about backing up the NVRAM partion. I get the following error in the terminal:
[div class=\'codetop\']CODE[/div][div class=\'codemain\' style=\'height:200px;white-space:pre;overflow:auto\']USB port is obtained. path name(/dev/ttyACM0), port name(/dev/ttyACM0)

and I get the following dialog box:

Anyone seen this before, and can give me a pointer?  Thanks!

Gemini PDA - Android / New Gemini App: Airmail. Looks nice.

Or roll out Oreo--wasn't Planet promising a December release of Oreo?

Jake

I  just received an email from them stating that they are working on 8.1, and should have news before Christmas.

As for the Airmail app, I have been using it and so far like it   The only thing I cannot figure out is how to set up multiple email addresses for one account.  I forwarded all my email to one server, but  I would like to be able to  reply with the correct address.  If I remember K-9, it could be done there...

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / USA Phone & Data Networks
« on: July 08, 2018, 04:38:07 pm »
So, I use Ting (https://ting.com), which is a Sprint & T-Mobile resaler, and I have no issues.  Data, Voice, SMS, MMS, & tethering all work no issues. One of their selling points is bringing phones on to their network.

DM if you want a to give them a try and get a $25 service credit.

Gemini PDA - Android / Static IP

Yeah, I set the fixed IP addresses up in my router, too.

I have never found a way (either on Gemini or in last 2 years my Samsung tablet) - like gidds I get my router to assign a "fixed" IP based on the MAC address of the Gemini.

For WiFi,
Settings -> WiFi -> Long press on your SSID -> Modify Network -> Advance options -> scroll to IP settings -> Static -> set it up.

This is for Gemini-7.1-Planet-12062018-v2, stock, no root.

Not someplace to test hardwire setup, but I would expect it to be similar...

My rear camera module came in the mail today.

Thanks for this!  I got mine this week as well, but seem to have misplaced the tool to pull the cover, so I have not put mine on...

Gemini PDA - Android / Launch Google Assistant with silver button

Install Saiy assistant app from the Play Store.

Choose Saiy as your voice assistant.

Thoroughly configure Saiy to your liking.

Disable the pre-installed voice assistant.

Thereafter, pressing the silver button activates Saiy with the cover open or closed.

Saiy works very well thus far in my few weeks using it.

Cheers.
So, can you tell me how to disable the pre-installed voice assistant?

Thanks!

I'm with you. After 3 months, it is my only personal device. I have a work machine, but that doesn't count. Got X11 apps working under termux, XSDL - who could want for more

Got any pointers on getting X11 working under termux?  I have not tried yet, but it sounds interesting!

Thanks!

Gemini PDA - Android / Termux

If you are running ssh from Termux, you might want to look into Mosh as well: https://mosh.org/

Mosh uses ssh for initial authentication, but for the shell then switches over to UDP, allowing for roaming, session resuming after disconnecting, and more.

Mosh is nice but it does make scrolling your output impossible, which is annoying. If you want to keep scrolling but not have your ssh session cut off by Android's battery saver, be sure to disable power management for Termux in the Android settings.

My solution for this issue (and when using laptops) is to start mosh, then tmux on the remote host.  I have my scrolling, and in the event something goes wrong locally, my remote session is still protected.

Gemini PDA - Android / Adaptive Brightness will not turn off
« on: May 29, 2018, 02:24:30 pm »
So, rocking the latest updates, and the adaptive brightness control is driving me crazy.

I have never really liked this feature, so I turn it off.  The problem is on my Gemini, the setting will turn  back on in 10-15 seconds.  Any way to turn it off for good?

Thanks!

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / Weak Wifi/Bluetooth

Hi people,

just got my Gemini in from the second batch and it seems that the device has very weak wifi/bluetooth range. The bluetooth needs to be in direct line of sight and less than 2 meters. The wifi also needs to be within a 5m proximity of the router. Is this is normal or have I got a special device?

Andy

Hello, Andy.

I have not tested Bluetooth yet, but my WiFi reception is on par with any of my phones. Sorry you are having issues...

Just got an email from DHL that my Gemini has been picked up in Hong Kong and is on its way to me here in USA.

Tracking says it will be here tomorrow!!!

Weird thing is order checker says my unit should be shipped mid-May and in my order details page on IndieGoGo it says 'order placed'......

Go figure......not that I'm complaining that I should have my lil' Gemini tomorrow....

Order 4276

Yup, I got note from Robin. #3968 w/connectivity stuff. Haven't checked DHL tracker. 4G, US.

[Update] Checked DHL. Says was picked up in Hong Kong and will be delivered on Friday. But weirdly it also says "Shipment on hold." No idea what to make of that.

DHL says that as of 00:03 (3 minutes AM) Thursday, mine is in Hong Kong and "On Hold".

I would mark the shipping notices as 'good news' and not worry quite so much about the details.  We should be getting them inside of the next week - which for an Indiegogo crowdfunder is a win.

I got mine today and am typing this message on it.  I never got any notice via Indiegogo either but I did get one via DHL. I am in the United States, order between 2600 and 2900.

Mine showed up yesterday, but I am out of country until this weekend!  Just my luck...

I got the note from DHL, then a note from Robin as well...cannot wait to start playing with it.  Already have a SIM card ready to go....
