Gemini PDA - Hardware / Keyboard wear & tear
« on: July 19, 2018, 08:30:47 pm »
Just to add on the story of my dodgy M key (if anyone cares :-)

The key got looser and looser and more unresponsive to the point it was falling out all the time ( i.e. turn the keyboard upside down, it falls out).  It looked like the very slight 'clip' at the bottom of the that holds the key into the keyboard had worn and this was also causing the key not to reach the membrane below.

I happened to have a spare set of keycaps that Robin sent me earlier (I know experiences with Planet vary, but mine has only been excellent) and thus switched the key to my spare one and now it is fine.
This is worrying though if there is variation in the build quality and if plastic too soft - this might not be the last such experience.  The margin between a good fit/responsiveness and a bad one is a fraction of a millimetre.

Not sure if it is just me, but it doesn't seem possible to choose 24 hour time format; that's quite a basic localisation function, even within the UK..

I had my Gemini since early May (first shipment x27) and use it for email primarily - so a lot of typing - in the hand held 2 thumbs position .

A couple of observations:
1. I already notice the keys plastic starts to get shiny particular the space bar in the spot I hit it with my right thumb
2. Some keys were a bit wobbly on arrival, this has progressed and then this week mid typing, the M popped right off!  It went back in again but now it is even more wobbly than before.

Is it just me or the plastic is too soft?

Gemini PDA - Android / How to open app drawer on launcher

For now I've settled on Nova Launcher, there is a weird bug for pinned icons but you can avoid this by not having pinned icons.  Nova allows arrow key navigation and quick search in the drawer, plus you can get rid of the Google search bar, so all in all not bad.  It doesn't have hotkey binding like the Blackberry launcher though.

Bluetooth mouse works well as well.
Actually what I'm really looking for is a Bluetooth trackball which could clip onto the side or back of the Gemini,  like the old Microsoft Ballpoint Mouse but suitably sized for the Gemini.
I had a Sharp netwalker which had a kind of "thumb pad" you could move your finger over and it would move the cursor, that also allowed fairly precise pointing with no moving parts.

There is an arrow icon in the bottom left corner of the default Launcher3 home screen which opens the full app drawer.

I use Apex Launcher which works pretty well keyboard, probably not the most optimized it could be though, pretty much just arrow key based navigation. Overall a better option than the built in one I think.

Thanks, I tried the Blackberry launcher which is (understandably) keyboard friendly, you can bind a shortcut key to everything.  But sadly the display is broken in landscape mode and it looks terrible, again understandably...

And did you have success with replacing ENTER with SPACE to unlock? Was another tipp somewhere in this forum...

This is what I do, password lock and use space to get to the enter password screen.  I do have the same problem as OP that sometimes the password doesn't register after typing and pressing return, but it does work most of the time (not enough to be annoying).

The main irritation I have is that after a lock/unlock routine, Android doesn't return to exactly the same place but sometimes back to the home screen or the main window of the active application, but I think this is a Android problem rather than anything to do with the Gemini?

Gemini PDA - Android / How to open app drawer on launcher

Hi everyone,
Just getting to grips with my new Gemini, does anyone know what keystroke would open the "app drawer" from the main launcher screen?
I know I can swipe up to get it but... that seems to defeat the point somewhat.
Also, if anyone can recommend a keyboard friendly, landscape friendly replacement launcher, that would be helpful too.

regards
Mike
