General Discussion / Sharp Is01: The Zaurus Is Back, Sort Of...

The link is broken. I think You mean that:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/30/sharp-i...-au-to-android/
It looks nice but news does not mention about size of the ram. And that is crucial to linux.
Sorry, yes, bad cut-n-paste.
Probably this source has better details:

A surprise move from Sharp: the long-awaited (by some) successor to the Zaurus, a new clamshell "MID" running Android, with a beautiful 5" 960x480 screen, a Snapdragon CPU and plenty of goodies:

http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/30/sharp-i...-au-to-android/

Engadget goes "meh", which is a pretty good omen in my book :-)

Also there will be a "developer-friendly" version dubbed DK01 where the OS is replaceable. Maybe we will see Maemo, Mer and/or Meego on it ?

OESF Announcements / Recent Site Outage

Thanks for the explanation and your dedication -- we all had a nice good fright there for a while :-)

It also seems like a strange time for oesf to go down, just when Sharp came out with the IS01. which is the closest thing to a Zaurus successor in a while...

Fortunately there were some reassuring posts in the Pocketables forum dome days ago, and all is well again!

I'm located in Spain, and I'm using a simyo sim for data only.

Sharp PC-Z1 NetWalker / Sharp Netwalker Pc-z1, Who Has One?

I guess I know what you mean. I had a terrible experience with the Kohjinsha SA1, a precursor of the first 7" Asus eeePC.

It was an innovative and fun little machine, ahead of its time, but the keyboard itself was much like what you describe of the Sharp's.

Given that the main selling point of these clamshells over plain tablets like the Smart Q5/Q7 is precisely that they have a keyboard, they just don't make any sense if you can't actually type on them... :-)

Thanks. Is the M1's keyboard better than the Sharp's ? Seems the M2 will have the same one.

Do let us know how it goes with the Sharp... reviews were such a mixed bag it's hard to know what to think.

Nothing like an actual hands-on report by a trusted expert :-)

Sharp PC-Z1 NetWalker / Zaurus Is Dead .... Long Living Zaurus Aka Pc-z1

A somewhat more balanced review, in good English this time, which praises the hardware but still highlights somme immature aspects of the software :

Unfortunately the first reviews are really bad... keyboard, trackpad, screen density seem to be subpar for a regular Ubuntu desktop experience...
Where are you seeing those reviews, fpp??
Well, I didn't put in a link right away because the only factual and detailed review I've seen to date is in French.

All I've found in English are vague Engadget-style blog posts with opinions based on pictures.

But this is from an actual hands-on session during IFA, done by a *very* reputable French site, whose buying advice and testing methodology have gained quite a following here over the years.

These guys, just like us, really wanted to *like* that widget beforehand, so it troubles me to see them come away so disappointed, and with precise arguments to back up that impression.

One can always hope the demo item was a preproduction model, and that some of the cons may be corrected before general availability... but this is probably not something I'd buy without having actually seen it beforehand, which makes it an iffy proposition if it stays "Japan-only" in the great Sharp tradition.

Here is the link, for those who read French or want to try and Babelfish it :

Meanwhile, Conics has verified with Sharp that you can easily convert OS from Japanese to English....

Always good news, of course, although I'd have been really surprised (and outraged :-) if it hadn't been the case...

I have a C760 if you want, it's the same hardware as the C860.

It's in good state, with a Wifi compact flash, 220V charger, ziplinq USB cable-and-charger, original box & accessories.

It's currently in France if you're interested.

My C760 is gathering dust because my Nokia Internet tablet(s) do all the work. What I need to take it out of retirement is an exciting new port of Android :-)
