SIMpad forum / Better Browser Than Opera 7.5.5 ?
« on: January 29, 2007, 05:14:22 pm »
Too bad nobody can point to a more modern browser.  :-(
Where is firefox, seamonkey, etc.?

The Opera installation was done by a friend, credits to him.
I have to run the "rotten old" Open Simpad v0.8.1, for library compatibility, he said. Besides that, according to the notes I made, here are the steps to perform, after obtaining the package and somehow copying it to the simpad:
Code: [Select]
ipkg install opera_7.55.6079_arm.ipk

mv /etc/pcmcia/hostap_cs.conf /etc/pcmcia/hostap_cs.conf.orig

cd /root
rm .opera
rm .operasave

ln -s /opt/QtPalmtop/opera/.opera .opera
ln -s /opt/QtPalmtop/opera/.operasave .operasave

cd /usr/share
rm opera
ln -s /opt/QtPalmtop/opera/ opera
ln -s /opt/QtPalmtop/opera/buttons operabuttons

cp opera.ini /root/.opera

SIMpad forum / Better Browser Than Opera 7.5.5 ?

What's the best browser I can run on the SimPad?

The latest I could get a good while ago was Opera 7.5.5, which seemed to have leaked from the Zaurus. However, it crashes often and has its own style of presentation, to put it mild.

I need Javascript (more specifically a XMLHTTP request to do some AJAX). The old Opera has Javascript, but not such features.

SIMpad forum / Familiar Release 0.8.4
« on: September 04, 2006, 08:09:48 am »
The download page has no button for Simpad, and I don't see it mentioned here:

However, the frontpage says: "Familiar v0.8.4 for the iPAQ h3600, h3700, h3800, h3900, h5400, and h5500 series, and Siemens Simpad." Did they change their mind?

/me is confused...

Do the resources of our poor beloved pad get close to allow for a firefox at all?

SIMpad forum / Simpad As Picture Viewer... Questions
« on: August 30, 2006, 11:32:34 am »
I've tested picture viewing a good while ago. May have changed a lot since.
With a web browser, it was dreadfully slow (using M$ IExplorer or Opera under Linux). In the Linux packages I found MooView, which is pretty fast, but crashed my pad most of the time. I hope there are better programs, and I just haven't found them.

I've looked because somebody was asking:
Pollin ships abroad, too. Either with advance payment, or pay on delivery. There is no minimum order.

My simpad's battery life is down to a few seconds. I found replacement cells here:
Panasonic cells CGP345010
You'd need 4 of them for a pack, quite a cheap replacement. I have just received mine, they have more available. I can post some pictures on how to refurbish the pack, once I'm done with it.

All models:
*Li-Ion battery

IIRC the "weaker" models (T-Sinus) have a NiMH battery.

Cheers for anybody picking up a SimPad again!

(see older posting, I try to renovate mine, then found Opera to be gcc-incompatible with the newer Opie)

About SD cards: the serial for the DECT modem is usually free. I don't know of it has a clock and can be used sychronously (SPI), if so you're clear. Even better if the DMA can work with it. We used MMC and SD cards in the Rockbox project, driving it with 3 Mbit/s there (hardware limit).

My battery is also almost dead, but I'm not worried, the RC model people have a large variety these days. The cabinet has plenty of space.

Yay for mq200 acceleration!  \o/

SIMpad forum / What's The Best I Can Install?

Many thanks for the initial pointers!

edit 3:
Bootloader update with serload failed on my PC, worked on the notebook.
Familiar "opie-image-simpad-20060129104230.rootfs.jffs2" was bitching alot, but seems to run. Looks different!

Now I'd need Firefox (struggling with Opera ipk). Where would I find that? The builtin email client didn't connect to GMX, but that could well be my fault.

Hardware support seems rather unchanged, still some noise (and only until resumed) instead of sound, the buttons don't navigate, power button does no suspend.

Speaking of Java: Can the Simpad execute Java applets?

Please excuse this noob-kindof question,

In short, I'd welcome any status info and pointers what a Simpad can do these days.

I own a simpad with Opie 0.8.something installed, did this perhaps 2 years ago (after an article in the german c't magazine) and haven't changed a bit since. I should care more about keeping it up to date, but am no Linux user elsewhere (Windows lamer, boo).

My pad is still in a state with no useful sound, some ancient opera version which was meant for a Zaurus or so, the mail client was not properly compiled back then, the power button doesn't suspend it and the other buttons are not useful either.
I'd love to have firefox or a more recent opera on it, a mail client and more stability. A JPEG browser woulb be nice, too, I tried MooView but it crashes.

A couple of days ago I read that the 2 founders (cmartin and his fellow) have *sold* their pads, the project is dead. It was pointed to some other Linux port, I forgot the name, which will support the Simpad, but it hasn't been released yet.

More speed would also be great, I vaguely remember having read that there's some display hardware accelerator which is currently unused?

I woudn't mind contributing myself (I'm an embedded software developer), in the past I haven't done so because I have close to no clue about Linux and it was said the setup of a development environment is very demanding. Are "we" perhaps benefiting from the Nokia 770, can that software run on / be ported to the Simpad?
