General Discussion / End Of Private Messages
« on: June 19, 2007, 04:43:00 pm »
I am checking oesf forum once per week. If someone want to contact me then please use email or Jabber instead of "private messages" which forum offers - I will ignore them as I do not have them in my email client so I cannot check what I wrote to user ZY or UPO.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / The End Of Ewi546 Is Coming
« on: September 29, 2006, 03:07:07 am »
For nearly year we used ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl as our primary mirror and also as build machine. In next 1-2 weeks machine will get cleaned and moved to other tasks.

I want to thanks Koen Kooi for providing disk space there so we were able to provide feeds and images for our users. Without CPU power of that machine I would not be able to provide OpenZaurus 3.5.4.1/3.5.4.2-rc so easily (my home machine is not reliable enough to do builds).

Now we have to think about new home for our releases. Thanks to Matthias 'CoreDump' Hentges we have it mirrored and available under adress http://feeds.openzaurus.org/ (thx goes to Chris 'kergoth' Larson for providing that CNAME).

But when we release new version bandwidth usage is very big - for example OpenZaurus 3.5.4.1 took about 14GB in first days after release. We have to think how to solve it as we do not have mirrors without transfer limits now.

One of solutions is moving OpenZaurus to LinuxToGo but it would need getting new machine to LTG project so we have to collect money. That will also mean moving website from SourceForge so it will work faster.

Any thoughts/commments/suggestions?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / New Build Of Qt/e For Testing
« on: April 03, 2006, 10:02:57 am »
This directory/feed contain libqte2 rebuild for all OZ supported machines. Users of OpenZaurus 3.5.4/3.5.4.1 are requested to install it and tell does it works or not for them.

We want to have it tested before it will be added into upgrades feed.

the ROAD GmbH (www.road-gmbh.de) was kind enough to give their fixes
to the kernel-keymap patch back to the community. I finally found the
time to merge these fixes back into our copy of the kernel-keymap.patch.

I'm glad we have fixes for:

-Workaround broken KeyMaps. This means no more 'dead' keyboards for Opie users *yipee*
        -Fix handling of function keys
        -Fix handling of NumLock keys
        -Fix handling of Auto Repeats
        -Handle keys >  7Bit
-Add Handling for ShiftL and ShiftR modifiers
        -many more small fixes.

The keyboard support now is way more mature than it was before. I
would like to thank the ROAD GmbH and I personally wish them good
luck on their product and I sincerly hope they will release it soon!

Spitz (sl-c3000) and Borzoi (sl-c3100) images are the same so we united them.
C7x0 machines have issues with sound which will be fixed before release.

test it and report bugs, fixes, ideas..

OE Bugtracker:   http://bugs.treke.net/
GPE Bugtracker:  http://handhelds.org/bugzilla/

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / 3.5.4.x Upgrades
« on: March 17, 2006, 07:50:36 am »
Requests for packages which are in OE and need to be upgraded and added to the (upgrades) feed.

Rules the same as in previous versions:
1. package MUST already exist in OpenEmbedded
2. it has to be package - we won't build whole OPIE

Thread will get open after release.

List of packages which was available without upgrades.

Please do not start offtopic discussions here - I'm going to clean from time to time.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Openzaurus 3.5.4 Status
« on: February 06, 2006, 10:35:27 am »
I decided to write some words here on forum as it will show progress not only to people who track OpenEmbedded changes or OpenZaurus website but also to others (like Cacko/Watapon/PdaXrom users).

OpenZaurus 3.5.4 will be build by Michael ‘Mickeyl’ Lauer when we resolve all release problems. Decision who will be Release Manager are nearly taken and it looks like I (Marcin ‘Hrw’ Juszkiewicz) will be that person.

There was two testing cycles and now I'm building 3rd one. I got ~100 testers with over 110 Zaurus machines (all models covered). Thx to feedback, bug reporting, patches from OZ testers (and from Familiar team and testers) this release will be best OpenZaurus release ever.

We will use following kernels:
- 2.4.18 on collie (sl-5000/5500), poodle (sl-5600) and tosa (sl-6000)
- 2.4.20 on akita (c1000), borzoi (c3100) and spitz (c3000)
- 2.6.14-rc1 on c7x0 (c700/750/760/860)

All kernels are updated to WE18 so wireless networking in WPA networks should work (OPIE and GPE network settings does not support WPA yet so it has to be done from hand).

We resolved many kernel related problems:
- suspend on right-arrow (collie, poodle, tosa)
- no resume after suspend
- too fast keyboard repeat on c7x0

Many people wonder why at all we are going to release OpenZaurus 3.5.4 with 2.4.20 kernel for Cxx00 instead of going to 2.6 for it. The main reason is that 2.6 support is not widely tested yet - we know that it works on spitz (sl-c3000) or borzoi (sl-c3100) but it was not so tested on akita (sl-c1000). And users have more SD/CF cards and other stuff then we can test for working.

We will provide few types of images:
- officially supported: bootstrap, gpe, opie
- experimental: xfce, e17

After 3.5.4 release we will work on getting current 2.6 kernels for c7x0, cxx00 (c1000/c3000/c3100) usable with 3.5.4 feeds - there is some work to do with it and we did not yet finished all ALSA work. There will be also experimental build with 2.6 kernel for tosa (sl-6000) to get it more tested on user machines.

5x00 Hardware / Making Collie Really One Pcmcia Slot Device
« on: February 03, 2006, 11:18:26 am »
With 2.4.18-crapix collie returns 2 pcmcia/cf slots to userspace but has only one.

I'm curious does someone patched kernel to make it report only one slot as it should be?

I'm a bit tired of users which asks why opie-pcmciaapplet show 2 slots on collie or which thinks that 1st slot is CF and 2nd is SD...

argh... Sharp/Lineo...

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Important Fix For Oz 3.5.4-rc Need Testing
« on: November 21, 2005, 01:40:02 pm »
OpenZaurus 3.5.3 contained ugly hack in gpe-image for collie (sl-5500/5000) machines: killing APM daemon with X11 startup. It was needed at that time to get system working.

But it is not probably needed anymore since r21 kernel which fixed APM problems. I'm not using GPE on my collie so my fast test is not something which I trust enough to know does it is OK.

What is to test? GPE image from OpenZaurus 3.5.4-RC (or even OZ 3.5.3 with r21 kernel). You have (as root) edit /etc/X11/Xserver file and remove two lines from it:

Code: [Select]
# Horrible hack required to enable resuming after suspend
rm -f /dev/apm_bios
killall -9 apmd

What this will give? Working APM daemon == USB Networking working after suspend/resume, if alarms didn't worked before then they should work now etc..

Share your results here.

Accessories / Compactflash Card Info Database
« on: October 28, 2005, 06:40:54 am »
In last few days I was thinking about creating database with informations about CompactFlash cards (maybe will expand it to PCMCIA ones too). Basically it would contain informations from 'cardctl info' output + information about preferred driver (kernel module) for it. And ofcourse field for user note.

I want to split driver info into 2.4 and 2.6 part (there is no bt950_cs for 2.6).

Few functions will be provided:
1. adding card into database
2. browsing database
3. searching

later probably also generating pcmcia-cs config and generating 2.6 device_table entries.

What do you think about it? Do you see any use for it? Will someone fill it?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Opie Notes
« on: October 25, 2005, 06:13:04 am »
During last days I was working on OPIE Notes application. As base I used NoteZ 1.1.0 with my patches.

First I moved it to use OPIE PimMainWindow so it get the same look as Contacts or ToDoList. Then more work was done on it:

Code: [Select]
version 0.2 (2005.10.19):
- first working version
- info sent to NoteZ author and to OPIE devel

version 0.3 (2005.10.20):
- load/save in UTF-8
- load all files from Documents/text/plain
- create .txt files not .ntz - timestamp used as name
- one variable (documentsDirName) keep location of notes
- code (re)indented and converted to spaces
- variables translated to English (were in German)
- beaming

I added current version into OZ 3.5.3 upgrades so anyone can test it - comments are welcome.

Newer versions will be included into OPIE PIM API so any application could use it - current implementation will be just a frontend. This also means that newer version will require OPIE 1.2.2 (not yet released) - so no upgrades for OZ 3.5.3 - will try to release it for OZ 3.5.4.

Current plans:
- creating Note API
- writing SQLite backend
- writing XML backend
- searching in all notes (in opie-notes and opie-search)
- categories support
- sorting by title, last edit date
- toolbar with Cut/Copy/Paste during edit

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Openzaurus Faq
« on: October 04, 2005, 12:12:33 pm »
Some days ago I decided to collect some data and write kind of OpenZaurus FAQ. It will be posted on OZ website but with comments disabled. Some parts of text will be probably the same as the one already existing docs so I will first add some links to external docs. But as many of you know most of Zaurus docs are SharpROM related (especially 5500/5000 infos) and are not always right for OZ (they can work partially anyway).

Currently I have 2 first entries:
  • How to get own question on that list?
Search for author and then search for method of contact. Then send question and answer.
  • How to get answer to own question?
Use Search option here or on OESF forums. Don’t ask before searching.
Why another FAQ? I'm tired of watching the same questions asked again and again and again (and again) by someone who does not understand what for "search" option is.

I'm tired of 5 threads about "collie r21 kernel behavior" or 15 threads about "how to get connect+ wifi/storage card working under <any distro>". I can understand that user does not have to be developer to get it working without asking for help - but why not search for help first?
