C1000/3x00 General discussions / Complete Newbie/wannabe Questions
« on: December 14, 2004, 01:11:28 pm »
Eagerly waiting for my new zaurus...  Just wonder what extra stuff I need to buy to get it up and running as quickly as possible when it arrives.

*CF memory card: Doesn't the Zaurus sl-c3000 connect as an external drive in Windows XP out-of-the-box? Couldn't this route be used for installations, eg mcconvert for the initial japanese to english conversion...

*CF WiFi card: Will USB wifi work just as fine? I already have a D-link dwl 122 adapter (prism chipset) and an Iriver USB host cable with a mini a connector at one end...

General Discussion / Semi-transmissive vs transflective screens....
« on: November 02, 2004, 03:16:49 pm »
How great is the difference?

The way I've understood it, semi-transmissive screens are made up of uniform pixels that are both transmissive and reflective at the same time. "Transflective" screens on the other hand seem to use mixed dedicated transmissive and reflective pixels... At least this is my conclusion after a little Googling on the subject.

To me it seems like the effect should be about the same! -Readability in sunlight should be more a question of the ratio transmission/reflection than the method to achieve it... Perhaps the transmissive type could be a little grainier if anything?
Anyone had a chance to compare the different Zaurus models outdoors, the SL6000 with transflective vs the semi-transmissive ones?

Hmm...

General Discussion / Retrofit the c3000 with internal wifi
« on: October 29, 2004, 05:38:53 am »
The new c3000 seems to have an internal Hitachi microdrive with the same type of standard CF interface as those that have been popular to dissect from eg the Muvo2 MP3 player. Could anyone speculate on the possibilities to take out the drive of the Zaurus and instead fit an embedded CF WiFi card in the internal slot?

Given that the NIC has the proper physical dimensions to fit inside and that the wireless range will be affected, are there any other obvious hurdles?

I am not skilled in the ways a PDA is usually built and would be very interested to know if the internal CF can be expected to work differently from the ordinary slot for plug-in cards...

General Discussion / wifi card with plug-in antenna?
« on: October 25, 2004, 02:39:23 pm »
Hi! Anyone know if there are cards with plug in antennas to buy somewhere? I absolutely hate the antennas that stick out of all the cards I've seen sofar. Instead I would like some kind of small jack and an antenna that either hangs lose or some kind of film with a coil that could be stuck to the back of eg a Zaurus... Incredible that Sharp decided not to integrate wifi in the new clamhell model... Would have bought it instantly!
