Hello,

I recently acquired a few 4G micro-drives, that are designed for use in a CF type II slot.
I am hoping to make use of this on both a C-750 and SL-6000 at some point, and I started getting somewhat interested again, in using my C-750 for many tasks.

I actually have invested a few hours so far, on the C-750, just trying to get the 4GB CF micro-drive get to a point where I can use it.  The "system" (Cacko) recognizes it as far as showing that it is inserted, and also allows an eject of the device.  It correctly identifies the device and manufacturer, but that is the only indication that I get from the "OS".

But there is nothing in the "dmesg" output, and I have tried "guessing" at possible device names to pass to fdisk, but I have had no success.

If anyone has any ideas at all, that may be helpful, please pass them on...  Thank You.

Hi Folks,

As I stated in the subject, I do realize that it is 2022, 18 years after the SL-6000 was released, and I was heavily involved with LINUX, embedded systems in general, as well as developing my own operating systems, graphical and development environments, and even spent almost a year working in somewhat of a private sub-contacting role to define and develop what would eventually become "Android" it seems for LG, through the SavaJe organization.  (The company was sold off to Sun Microsystems around 2004 or so, and we had produced the world's fastest JAVA system, which was a completely original, novel, and somewhat "radical" effort some could say, to produce a JAVA operating system and environment for handhelds and "phones", that was standalone, and was the entire operating system as well as a complete user environment, requiring no other OS underneath it.

Since the JAVA source code was obtained from Sun Microsystems in the early days of SavaJe, it was very fitting and appropriate that the entire asset-set and source code was ultimately returned to the domain of Sun Microsystems, and somewhat surprising to me that LG ultimately made the decision to "go with" a  LINUX-based OS for their Android offering.

Some of you may or may not remember the MISKINIX project that I embarked on, which was a complete proof-of-concept 3D Windowing system and multitasking environment that I developed for use on Palm and compatible handhelds from 2002-2004, which I suspended due to becoming involved with some more commercial and career-based endeavors.  In any case, I recently posted a bit of information and screenshots of the MISKINIX system on FaceBook, as some folks were interested, and I no longer maintain the miskinix.com website, and the PalmSide web site in Austria that originally hosted my MISKINIX forum, and "web site", was shutdown many years ago.

Anyway, I visited this forum once again today, not knowing if it would still be here, and what I would find.  I see that there are no longer model-specific forums for the Zaurus platform(s), but there is still a PDAXROM forum which was comforting to find.

I noticed that many of the sites such as "the grinder" which hosted the variant of PDAXROM known as PDAXQTROM was no longer available, and at this time, I do not know if I will every be able to find some of the software that I am searching for, or be able to contact some of the folks that I used to "chat with", if you will, in and outside of the forum.

I have recently acquired a Zaurus C-750, which seems to be functioning properly, and I plan to attempt to setup a PDAXROM, or some other X-based environment, for both use and development, as I find the pocket-sized and powerful computer system paradigm very useful, and I do not care much for "smart phones", and the "luggage" (such as surveillance capabilities) that they offer.

Anyway, I wanted to touch base with the community once again, and I hope that some folks will chime in.  I spent about an hour this morning searching for the "stock C-750" NAND backup file, but I became a bit disappointed when I saw that the one that was previously available had been corrupted and is no longer available.

Best Wishes, Happy Sunday, and I realize that this was quite a "long" post. :)  John

General Discussion / I'd Love To Setup A New Z Resource...
« on: September 12, 2011, 11:39:19 pm »
[a PM to someone offering a web site and FTP server, from almost a year ago]

Hi,

Yes, I must agree the forum is somewhat of a ghost town.

If you are still offering a free website, and/or FTP server, PLEASE count me
in.  I use my Z (SL-6000) daily, and I'm about to look through a "mile" high
pile of CDROMs for PdaXqtRom, and a bunch of other stuff.

It seems almost all of my old links are now invalid, and I'm finally about to
try to get videos working on the 6000.

I'm not sure I'll ever have the interest (or opportunity) to use my computer
engineering skills in the marketplace, and I'm gravitating towards other
interests, such as songwriting, and recording, etc. again.

Anyway, PLEASE let me know,  John

For Sale / Wanted / Fs - 2 Sl-5500s (1 Is Black ) And Maybe An Sl-6000
« on: January 27, 2007, 12:52:44 am »
Hi Folks,

As you can see from lack of recent posts, I really haven't been doing much with the
Zaurus these days.  I have a completely working SL-5500 which is black from removing
the silver paint on the front to look really cool and unique.  I did this before I got an SL-6000.
The other SL-5500 is missing one sound channel, maybe just the jack, maybe not.  It
also as a small and barely noticeable wear spot on the screen I think due to the previous
owner's repeated clicking of the opera icon on the stock ROM.

Anyway, it would nice to be able to keep one of the power supplies as a spare for my
SL-6000, so I'm willing to entertain offers for various combinations of things, as I have
2 cradles, 2 power supplies, 2 flip covers, 1 standard leather case, and 1 aftermarket case.
I suppose I could throw in a 64MB CF if I had to, but would rather not.

Oh yeh, a note on the black one.  The flip cover will not attach as tight as it use to, since
in process of removing a slight layer of the paint, that funny shaped indentation for the
flip cover became a little shallower mostly on one side.

Anyway, reply, or PM, and I will try to answer questions, and may post pics soon if there
is any interest.  I am in the USA and prefer paypal.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Howto Build A 5500 Beta1 Kernel Using Pdax86?
« on: November 02, 2006, 04:24:23 am »
Hi Folks,

I tried this a few months ago, and gave up.  I would very much like to
persue this effort again from scratch.  In an effort to get off on the right
track this time, I'd like to discuss this, and hopefully end up with enough
information to be able to build it myself, and also write up a detailed HOWTO.

I read the http://mail.pdaxrom.org/contrib/docs/kerne...mpile-3100.html guide,
but the links to the source don't work, and I also need the 5500 sources.

I assume the correct pdaX86 ISO to boot is the one under the
http://mail.pdaxrom.org/download/1.1.0beta1/ directory ?

And, I'm confused as to why that kernel compile guide mentions that the
pdaX86 system is configured with all the build tools, but then mentions that
he installed pdaXrom builder and cross-compile tools.

I've had some problems booting some of the pdaX86 ISO files on my laptop.
I'm going to burn the one from the beta1 location above shortly, and see if it
will boot as a starting point.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Troubles With Hostapd On Sl-6000 Beta1
« on: October 26, 2006, 02:14:45 am »
Hi Folks,

I have been experimenting with setting up my SL-6000 as an access point, since
I saw hostapd in the feed, and this is very interesting.  I am plugging in a LinySys
WCF-12, which I am able to setup as wlan1 manually (using iwconfig and dhcpd)
to connect TO an access point.  I am stuck though, when I try to use it with hostapd.
I get as far as:
Code: [Select]
# hostapd -d /etc/hostapd.conf
Configuration file: /etc/hostapd.conf
Opening raw packet socket for ifindex 6
Using interface wlan1 with hwaddr 00:06:25:24:8d:28 and ssid 'testap1'
Flushing old station entries
Deauthenticate all stations

MGMT
MGMT: BSSID=00:84:e1:ef:40:00 not our address

The hostapd process continues to run, but the light on the WCF-12 just blinks.
I'm new to hostapd and not sure if that MGMT message about the BSSID is
an error.  I have experimented with many things, since I could not find much info
on the web, and I'm hoping that someone else in the forum has used hostapd
on pdaXrom, and can tell me what might be failing.  I can't figure out where it
is getting that BSSID, nor where to specify one.  Many thanks for any info!

EDIT: More info, from when I kill the hostapd daemon:
Code: [Select]
Signal 15 received - terminating
Flushing old station entries
Deauthenticate all stations

Could not disable PrivacyInvoked for interface wlan1
ioctl[PRISM2_IOCTL_HOSTAPD]: Operation not supported

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Can't Read Comments In Developer Blogs On Homepage
« on: October 16, 2006, 06:29:41 pm »
Hi Folks,

When I click on the comments link on any of the developer's blog entries, I
do not get any text.  I have tried it in a couple browsers (firefox/galeon), and
figured I'd report the issue.

I'm about to burn the updated x86 ISO to CD, but I'm not sure if there is anything
I should know first (in the comments), which what prompted me to try to read them.

Thanks in advance, for any info, or for fixing it!   John

General Discussion / Adobe's Plugin Not Authorized On Linux Pdas!
« on: June 27, 2006, 03:37:41 am »
Wow, I read the end user license agreement for the shockwave plugin that
I was installing on my (desktop) RH9 box, and was very surprised to see all
the efforf (and words) they put into excluding "embedded linux" and basically
anything other than Microsoft XP Tablet Edition - based PDAs from being
an "Authorized Operating System" as they put it.

They say they perform audits, and that you can end up reimbursing them some
unknown amount of money, etc..  Man...

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Wierdness With Beta1 If Sd Is First In Ipkg.conf
« on: June 23, 2006, 04:17:00 pm »
Hi,

Maybe this is not the right thing to do, but in the past I have changed
the /etc/ipkg.conf file, to list the SD card as the first destination, thus
making it the default.  This to avoid having to specify it, as well as
to prevent running out of space on / if I forget to specify it.

Anyway, I'm on a 6000 with beta1.  With the SD card as the first destination
ipkg update goes wild, and seems to even try to delete the /mnt/card directory!
There are also other errors that I have never seen before, and I have included a
few lines of output below, but some of the xterm history got corrupted.

It seems putting / back as the first destination and running "ipkg update"
makes everything OK again, but I figured I'd mention it.  Whew!

# ipkg update

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Problem With Feeds, Or Did They Move? Help!
« on: June 21, 2006, 05:53:30 pm »
Hi Folks,

I'm trying to find firefox (and deps) for the 6000 for the latest (beta1) release.

The feed links, if clicked in a browser return "page not found".  The main feed
seems to work for "ipkg update" but not for:

http://mail.pdaxrom.org/1.1.0beta1/Zaurus-7x0-860/feed/

Is there something wrong with the feed?  Any help greatly appreciated!

Thanks,  John

Zaurus - pdaXrom / 5500 And 1.1.0 Beta1 - No /etc/wlan/ Directory?
« on: June 13, 2006, 05:08:12 am »
Hi Folks,

After flashing an SL-5500 with the 1.1.0 beta1 version, I have no /etc/wlan/
directory, and thus I am stalled on WIFI setup.

Until now, I have not used any of the betas, and I'm wondering if the configuration
for WIFI has changed in this version.  I am accustomed to modifying wlan.conf
and creating a wlancfg-ESSID file, etc..

Any clues welsome,  John

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Sl-6000 - Square Brackets, Braces, Etc. (x11)
« on: March 14, 2006, 01:18:50 am »
Hi Folks,

I just figured out how to do this, and I figured I'd pass it on.  Also, it might be
helpful to put these in the default pdaXrom tosa.xmodmap unless there are
reasons not to, that I do not yet know about.

Anyway, I decided it would be easy to remember, mapping the square brackets
to the (printed) angle bracket keys.  And the curly braces to the (printed) parentheses
keys.  These would take effect when both FN and SHIFT modifiers were pressed.

SO, edit /etc/X11/kb/tosa.xmodmap and change the four lines as follows:

OLD:
   keycode 20 = l L parenleft
keycode 71 = comma semicolon parenright
keycode 72 = period colon less less
keycode 36 = Return Return greater greater

NEW:
   keycode 20 = l L parenleft braceleft
keycode 71 = comma semicolon parenright braceright
keycode 72 = period colon less bracketleft
keycode 36 = Return Return greater bracketright

I hope this is of some help to some folks,

John

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Rc11 On Sl-6000 - Looks Ok So Far!
« on: September 19, 2005, 08:59:37 am »
Hi,

I was just about to go to sleep, when I clicked "refresh" on the forum page
and saw the RC11 announcement.  Needless to say, I grabbed it (twice -
incorrect MD5sum the first time) and installed it.  I figured I'd post, to let folks
know that it did not brick my device, etc.

I noticed that the power button suspends/resumes OK, mixmos appears to run,
but I have not yet attempted to do much more.  I can provide an update later
if folks are interested.

Many thanks for this RC11 ROM and *feed* !!!

« on: August 28, 2005, 12:59:12 pm »
Hi,

[ editied: I'm using an SL-6000L ]

I'm trying kphone, but having microphone problems.  The OSS Mixer app
never launches, and running mixmos produces:

# mixmos
Cannot read SOUND_MIXER_RECSRC.

Please, does anyone know how to overcome this, and get the mic working?

Many thanks,  John
