Zaurus - pdaXrom / Status Of Pdaxrom
« on: September 08, 2010, 05:52:13 am »
Sorry for the dumb question, but I'm confused as to pdaxrom on the Zaurus platform.  I've just purchased an SL-C3100 after a couple of years away from the Z - I had an Akita that I sold.

It seems pdaxrom continues, but is nothing to do with Zaurus.  Could it be be brought back to the Z?  Should it be brought back to the Z?  Is anyone else interested?

It seems feeds are a little missing in action: anything we can do collectively to organise those?

Sorry for all the questions which can probably be found by 2 days searching, but after 2 days searching I'm now more confused than ever
Thanks in advance

PocketPenguin / Form Factor - Handheld Pc, Or Zaurus-style?
« on: September 26, 2006, 05:26:53 pm »
Wow, this has really captured my imagination  !

For me, the zaurus is too small for comfortable use, both in terms of screen and in terms of the keyboard.

Perhaps I'm too old, but for me the sweet spot of form factor usability vs portability is in the shape of the Psion Series 5, and the Sigmarion 3.

The psion's keyboard is great, the screen is adequate if a weird shape...

The sig3 runs an 800x480 screen with a very, very capable keyboard.  If it ran Linux, well, it'd be *awesome*.

I'd love the screen real estate and keyboard size of the old devices with modern hardware.  Am I alone in thinking that that is about the right form factor for such a device?  We're not going for PDA replacement after all, but general purpose pervasive computing platform

Zaurus - pdaXrom / N00b Things: Library Paths, Etc...
« on: February 08, 2006, 06:17:25 am »
I realise that pdaxrom is targeting experienced linux people as users, but unfortunately I am not one of 'em.

I've been struggling recently with a few things, such as library locations.  If I choose to install something to /mnt/user using the package manager, the library will not be found after a reboot.

Changing /etc/ to add the path /mnt/user/usr/lib/ and then running ldconfig sorts this out.

Should this path be added to the baseline pdaxrom config?

Other things that would be useful would be a way of identifying where the space in the root partition has "gone" - knowing what are core OS files and what can be changed/removed would be good, as I find myself running out of space on / occasionally.

Is it possible to install man or info for pdaXrom?  This would again help newbies such as myself...

I know these are newbie things, but it would help the learning curve.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Uae Built And Working - Any Optimisation Hints?
« on: February 01, 2006, 05:56:03 am »
I've built UAE from source - a mercifully simple job - and am wondering if there's any particular compiler optimisations that are recommended for the Zaurus platform?

Performance is pretty good, but at the moment it couldn't really be used for games.  It's not too far off though, particularly if frameskip is set to 3 and sound is turned off.

Advice on how to package up an ipk would be good, too?

I'm going to try the package with and without SDL graphics, and with and without SDL sound.  The SDL graphics version seems fine, but SDL sound seems slow.

Anyone else interested?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Opera - What's Needed To Make It Work?
« on: October 06, 2005, 04:46:47 am »
Well, I've been pdaXromming for 3 days now on my SL-C1000.  It's very nearly got everything I need, but there's really two things I miss: syncing to outlook and Opera (or netfront)

I tried the opera install from IBM, but that is very heavily geared towards the QTPalmtop environment, so needs all the QT Palmtop libs to work.  Sorry for the newbie question, but is there any way that these can be installed into PdaXRom as a "compatability" layer in the same way that OpenZaurus has a compatability layer?  Is there anything from OZ that could be brought into PdaXRom?

I assumed that others would have asked this so I checked the faq and searched, but there didn't seem to be any answer.

Would this be something that others would be interested in?  I'd like to help, so if someone with a bit more development experience could pitch in, who knows, perhaps we could bring a compatability layer to pdaxrom?

Or am I talking wibble?

X/Qt / Getting Started With Development
« on: September 23, 2005, 06:03:47 am »
Hi Folks,
I have read the FAQ, checked the Wiki, and had a google or two but I could do with advice on getting started programming the Z, particularly with X/Qt. This seems an excellent way to port things to the Z but I don't want to exclude Qt, or perhaps use SDL...

In short, I am confused as to where to start and what toolkits to use.

I come from developing using Embedded Visual C++ on Windows for Windows CE, where it's all straightforward: you've got the Microsoft WinCE APIs, built in help, and when all is said and done the IDE works well.

If people were starting over on developing for the Zaurus, what toolset would you use, are there any IDEs worth working with, and where would you look for inspiration.

Sorry to ask a n00b question, but coming from the hand-holding world of MS development, this is quite a shock to the system

C1000/3x00 Hardware / Anyone Used The Logic3 Psp Charger?
« on: September 20, 2005, 08:34:39 am »
Has anyone used the Logic3 replacement PSP charger?  The specs are 5V at 2A, and it's a quality looking item... Admittedly a quality "looK" doesn't mean a quality supply, but they're half the price of the official PSP charger and are very small to boot.

I might have a play with one...  I might be able to source a 20W+ resistor to use as a test load as well.

Accessories / Usb Host Cables - Anyone Want One (uk)
« on: September 20, 2005, 06:36:12 am »
I can order USB host cables for £4.50+VAT.  Postage is £13 (!) per order from blackbox, so it would make sense to order a few.

Before I order, does anyone else want one?  I'll provide them at cost price plus cost of P&P (about £1.50 for recorded delivery), so let me know.

Email or PM me.
