Zaurus - pdaXrom / Zpsx: High Performance Psx Emulator For The Zaurus
« on: July 02, 2007, 10:18:58 pm »
UPDATE 08/02/07:
New build of psx4zaurus build 080207:
http://zodttd.com

Hi everyone,

Thanks to the kind help of those who donated and supported me for getting a new Zaurus, I have begun work on a new ZPSX. ZPSX is a PSX (PS1) emulator for the Sharp Zaurus. It has the benefit of using my psx4all project and it's MIPS -> ARM dynamic recompiler. Featuring sound, save states, memory card support, and lots of performance, it will be a killer app of the Zaurus once again.

Since my Zaurus came preinstalled with pdaXrom r198, I've installed Meanie's great SP8 fixes. I will be releasing ZPSX for this 2.6 kernel first. I will also try to release a patch for cpuoverclock.py that gives the extra bump in voltage needed to reach 624MHz on the PXA270 (processor in the Z's such as C1000).

For those who, like me, were trying to find the cross compile toolchain for GCC 3.4.x for use with the 2.6 Kernel Zaurus search for this file: cross-sdk-armv5tel-cacko-linux-3.4.6-2.2.5-softfloat.tar.bz2

I'm still adding much more performance to the psx4all's ARM Dynarec so I'm shuffling between ZPSX (psx4zaurus) and psx4gp2x. The GP2X is a Linux gaming handheld that also runs on the ARM arch. It is what I'm basing my new ZPSX version on.

Expect some great things soon from ZPSX.

Sharp ROMs / Psx4zaurus Now Supports Cacko! :)
« on: October 11, 2006, 11:44:03 pm »
A new build of psx4zaurus has been made:

For downloads and discussion, please use:
http://www.psx4all.net/

New in build 4:
- Improved performance for games such as Tekken.
- Now includes both a CACKO build and a PDAXROM build.

pdaXrom blits to the screen much faster than Cacko 1.23 with BVDD SDL. And with pdaXrom's overclocking ability it outpaces Cacko. But Cacko is faster clock-for-clock.

Cacko users now have psx4zaurus though! Try it out and let me know how it goes.

I'd really appreciate at least a "hello" in the psx4all Zaurus forums. It will give me a feel for whether Cacko users really want this project.

Thanks!

Zaurus - pdaXrom / I Got Pxafb_overlay Working With Zpsx...
« on: May 22, 2006, 06:31:46 pm »
I heard that the following loads the video acceleration for my C1000 in Beta 4:
modprobe pxafb_overlay

After using modprobe to load the module, you can use /dev/fb1 to access the video accelerated RGB framebuffer overlay. It's like BVDD but without the hassle.

Some issues I'm having with pxafb_overlay in my PSX emu:
- Is it possible to change pdaXrom's /dev/fb0 to 320x240, so the overlay isn't a small part of the screen. I prefer to keep 320x240 then scale up to 640x480, for performance reasons.
- Since this is an overlay, colors seem to "bleed" through each other depending on it's hue. Is there a way to prevent this from occuring with performance kept in mind?

ZPSX is coming along well. Now we have CPU Overclocking, and video acceleration. Once I get video acceleration working a release will be made.

Thanks,
ZodTTD

Zaurus - pdaXrom / 2.6 Kernel On Pdaxrom
« on: April 27, 2006, 02:32:01 pm »
Well I had started a thread about my PSX emu on pdaXrom, but the topic of the 2.6 kernel on the pdaXrom came up. To keep the threads seperate, if possible, post about the 2.6 kernel here.

[removed my flame/rant at Laze's request]

Thanks for working so hard on pdaXrom guys and the help you've given me sashz. Can't wait for 2.6 kernel to come out. If you need any assistance let me know.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Psx Running On The Zaurus
« on: April 24, 2006, 08:58:24 pm »
I decided to start a new topic for ZPSX as the other topic was getting very large and hard for people new to this project to get information on it.

ZPSX is a Playstation emulator on the Sharp Zaurus. It is designed for pdaXrom, and tested on a C1000. It uses the pdaXrom SDL 1.2.9 ipk that supports bvdd.

The latest version of ZPSX as of April 24th is 0.36. It's features include:
- Memory Card support.
- Save state support.
- 320x240 and 640x480 Zaurus support.
- Sound support.
- Plays a good amount of games.
- Support for compressed ISO's with PocketISO 2.0 available at www.fpsece.net

Current issues:
- The emulator is in need of more performance for graphically intensive games such as FF7.
- Performance could be improved by implementing a working "render" frame skip.
- Currently using an interpreter emulation method. In the works is a dynamic recompiler!
- Better compatibility is needed, and is soon to come.

Download it at:
http://www.friggingames.com/zpsx036.zip

Requires:
- SDL lib
- libbz (included with ZPSX release)
- libz

And now for some news:
A DYNAMIC RECOMPILER IS BEING WORKED ON AS WE SPEAK!
I finally have found a dedicated developer for the dynamic recompiler for ZPSX, he and I have been working on it and it's going smoothly. It should be ready within the week.

The dynamic recompiler method of emulation, especially with our way of going about it, should greatly speed up ZPSX overall!

Also Unai from Chankast fame, and Chui who is well known in the Dreamcast scene, have been working hard on the codebase and I should be receiving their work this week. Unai has been working on the GPU (Graphics Process Unit) emulation and I'm excited to see what improvements have been made!

So good news all round for ZPSX. Same goes for the other PSX emu ports I work on that are based on this codebase such as GP2PSX.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Latest Cross Compile Sdk For 3.5.4.1
« on: April 09, 2006, 01:54:13 pm »
I'm looking for the latest cross compile sdk/toolchain for OZ 3.5.4.1.
I have one from OE with GCC 3.4.4 but I have a feeling I need to get a newer version.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Openttd Ported To The Zaurus
« on: February 12, 2006, 02:34:27 pm »
Hi everyone. I took a day off from working on ZPSX to do this port.
If you don't know what OpenTTD is, it's a modification of the original Transport Tycoon Deluxe source released by Chris Sawyer.
I ported OpenTTD to the Sharp Zaurus in about 3 hours, but everything seems to be working well. It runs GREAT in 640x480.

Grab ZTTD at:
http://www.friggingames.com/zttd_021206.zip

Instructions are included, as well as source, and binaries.

Feel free to merge this release into a Zaurus distro.

Thanks,
ZodTTD
